Again, if all Championships are equal, why the need for a distinction? :-D

They distinguish different league championships. AFL Championship, NFL Championships, and post-merger championships are all obviously not the same thing. It avoids confusion when you now have a league that contains both AFL and NFL teams. You wouldn't say the Bills have 2 NFL championships? No, they never played in the NFL when they won those championships, they played in the AFL. Would you say the Jets have 2 NFL championships? No, they have 1 AFL championship and 1 Super Bowl championship, even if they occurred in the same season.

But by your own logic you SHOULD say that.

The teams in that league are now NFL teams. A championship is a championship. How is an NFL Title superior to an AFL title? So the Bills aren't 0-4 in Championships, they're 2 for 6. Right?

Exactly. Both were HALF of the current league. It was in a more antiquated league, with less teams and less competition. There's a reason we say "Modern Era" or "Superbowl Era."

Also, saying Championships don't count is also a kick in the taint to the guys who played for next to nothing, some of which played both ways, didn't have the luxury of modern training equipment and medications and certainly didn't have the level of protection that today's pads and helmets give. These guys played for the love of the game, not million dollar salaries and huge endorsement contracts.

The league and the rules were what they were. You played who you were told as many times as you were told and the winner was determined by the rules in place at the time. Just because there were fewer teams and no real championship game was played doesn't belittle their accomplishments and doesn't mean their results should be forgotten.

No, by my logic, you're just distinguishing different league championships. I'm not assigning value, you are. You're assigning value based on your own personal belief that Super Bowl era > NFL and AFL era. There were NFL and AFL championships before they even started playing each other. That's part of the reason why we say "Super Bowl-era".

We'll just have to agree to disagree.

The Packers have 9 NFL Titles in the pre-merger era. They were undoubtedly the class of the NFL back then. And of the original NFL teams, they've had the most success from the inception of the league.

But 9 NFL titles =/= SB wins. They just don't. Yes, had they played the SB sooner, the Packers likely would have 2 maybe 3 more. But they didn't. An NFL Title is an NFL Title. A SB is a SB. You don't add them together.

That just doesn't make any sense. They have the same function: crowning the best professional American football team. NFL Championship = Super Bowl. I know a lot of Steelers fans like to think that anything prior to 1970 doesn't count, but it does.

That's where we began. It's not just Steeler fans. Faulty premise.

My father has been an Eagles fan for 60 years, and he'll tell you the same thing.

Like I said, it's really only Packer fans that want to equate them.

ETA: And yes, I know I just painted with the same broad brush. :) But no other team's previous Titles ever really get mentioned, much less counted.

Sure they do. Browns fans do it all the time. If the Steelers had a NFL championship from 1933-1966, I'm sure people here would talk about having 7 championships as a franchise. The Giants, on their website, list Super Bowls as "Championships" alongside their NFL Championships.
