I'm fine with making a trade to improve the line, but we're no where near the worst in the league. Hard to take you serious when you make statements like that.

Glenn, it's hard to take you seriously when you attempt to browbeat anyone who is not as relentlessly optimistic as you are. Name an OLine that is worse than this one.

The offense played like crap today overall. Heath showed up, but the rest of them pretty much stunk. Ben was probably the biggest disappointment for me today.
I agree with the chance to trade for a LT if the situation is right.
I'm not Browbeating you, merely pointing out that saying that our O-Line is the worst in the league is an inaccurate statement. Has to do with facts.

Lol, I wish, but I think it would take draft picks.

Honestly, I'm not sure how anyone can say that we have the worst offensive line in the league. Even with our starting LT and Pro Bowl center out, the line played decently today given the level of competition. Guys like Geno Atkins, Michael Johnson and company have a bit of a say in how the plays unfold as well. Ben was bad, plain and simple. If Ben plays like he's capable of, we win this game.

You are entitled to your opinion, of course, but here are the facts as I see them: we have a LT, LG, and C who wouldn't start for any other team in the NFL and a RT who is average at best. Whether it's due to injury or poor decisions by the FO or just bad luck, these are the facts as I see them.

Sorry, but that's your opinion its not a fact, which is fine if that's the way you feel, but I doubt you can find a ranking that says our O-line is overall the worst in the league.

I agree with you guys that Ben was a big disappointment today. And to clarify I'm saying the OLine, as it is presently constructed, is the worst in the league. Like all of us I'm sure, I watch a ton of other games as well as ours. It may be my Steeler bias, but I just don't see other teams' offensive linemen getting beaten one-on-one nearly as much as ours do.

That's a bit harsh in my opinion. First of all, the LT and C do not start for us either. i'm no fan of Foster, but he's not the worst LG in the NFL. I mean, there has to be 1 that's worse... right? Maybe? Seriously, he's actually pretty decent in run blocking when we go power and let him just match up and open a hole. In zone blocking and pass blocking his lack of quickness is troublesome.

Ok, I will grant you that is my opinion as long as you grant me that your statement that they are not the worst is also just an opinion.

Lol, I am sorry to be such a Debbie Downer.

Now I'm off to pore through the rosters of all NFL teams to try and see if there IS a worse LG. it's a bit like going into the woods and hoping to find Bigfoot, but I will conduct the research honestly and report my findings on this post.

Getting back to the question at the beginning of the thread, per Overtthecap.com we have $5.7 million in space right now. Staley has a base salary of $4.5 million this year, not counting bonuses that should be sunk with the 49ers. I don't know if his salary would be prorated for cap purposes, but the room appears to be there.

I'll admit I don't know much about Staley. Not sure how long his contract is. If we don't think AV is the answer at LT and we have a chance at a potential long term replacement them we should at least explore the possibility. Not sure if Staley is that guy or not, but worth some thought.

It can't be based on facts. You said yourself that it's a rating through seven weeks. I'm saying the line, as presently constructed, is the worst in the league. The line, as presently constrcucted, has only played the last two games. Therefore any ratings including anything more than the last two games don't pertain to this discussion. Just because the opinion is yours or matches yours doesn't make it a fact.

My bad, guys. I meant to type Joe Thomas, not Staley. He may be on the block too, I don't know. The article I posted is about Joe Thomas and Alex Mack. Sorry.

How about you come up a ranking over the last two games that says we're the worst then?

I can't. It's just my opinion. We've established that. I'm just trying to establish that your statement that they are not the worst (or football insiders.com's) is also just an opinion.

I am honestly going (as soon as I finish dinner) to look through all of today's starting lineups and then get back to this thread.

Bottom line for me: we've got to get better on the OLine. Drafting them hasn't worked that well, I think it may be time to bring in proven players to help. You have to admit that Joe Thomas, Maurkice Pouncey, Alex Mack, David Decastro, Marcus Gilbert left to right would be pretty fantastic.

Thomas' base salary is 8.8 million, so unless it's prorated for cap purposes, there would be no way to fit him in. However, I think Thomas is a top 2 or 3 LT, so I'd give Cleveland a high pick for him. Maybe even a 1st, especially when history says they'll just squander the pick anyway.

Sorry, but rankings based on statistics from onfield play are not opinions.
That's like saying we won today and that it's only an opinion that the Bengals won.

Of course they are. PFF's ratings are different from football insider.com's. How can that be the case if they're based on the same statistics? All offensive line ranking are subjective.
