I don’t know why teams, specifically our Steelers don’t make it a *routine practice* to make some sort of group package aggressive trade with rounds 5-7 and maybe even round 4 too to make large advancements into earlier rounds. Even if it meant trading for vets on other teams who are lesser starters or roll players.

I’d much rather they swing more aggressively in the first 3-4 rounds by moving up in some analytical way for players they want to target and nab and then focus heavily into the undrafted realm.

I would bet we’ve had as much success stories from undrafted players as we do from rounds 5-7.

Yes there are the examples of late round studs like AB and Keisel but we have had players like Ramone Foster, Willie Parker, and James Harrison being undrafted.

This can’t be a novel idea or approach but I’ve never really seen a coach or exec be asked or answer on this specifically. Maybe they have and provided a great response, I’ve just never read it.

Additionally, the easy response of “all draft candidates are a gamble” is not a satisfying response to me personally. I’d need a more substantive full throated reply.

Going for broke in rounds 1-3 (maybe 4) is an approach I’d love to see as a 5 year plan than just picking a full slate of draft pics.

Go ahead an kill me on this; I’m here for it.

Some loser QB named Ben Roethlisberger played football for Miami-Ohio.

Some loser WR named Randy Moss played football for Marshall.

Wait, those schools aren’t in the SEC! Someone keep @S.T.D from seeing this before it’s too late!

The true Answer is because the 5th, 6th and 7th round pick are not worth that much when it comes to Draft Trade Value..
2023 NFL Trade Value Chart (drafttek.com)

Lets make it simple and get the Value of the 17th pick in rounds 5 - 6 - 7. That equals 29+13+1. 43 points which will get you the 28th pick in the 4th round. The Steelers would not even be able to use these 3 picks valued at 43 points to move up 1 spot in the 1st round from 17 to 16; need 50 points for that. They could use the 2nd-5th-6th-7th pick to move 4 spots in the 2nd round and have pick #45 instead of pick #49. :)

Last 2 Steeler 7th round picks valued on the Draft chart at 1 point each, Harvin and Robinson still on the team and going strong.

Keep in mind that this year the Steelers do not have a 5th or 6th round draft pick.

And it’s not a fair trade

The team initiating the trade winds up giving away more to entice the trade

But could those combined get you into the fourth? Or move as far up in 5th as far as possible?

I would do either of those and then focus on undrafted players. We are happy with Warren from last year.

Can you expand on your reasoning behind that claim?

Really looking for insight and now throwing shade at all.
