As Deebo proved sometimes it has less to do with strength and more to do with angles and leverage. If Worilds does indeed walk I would be interested in seeing what Jarvis can do from that side. Bottom line I could care less how much these guys bench, Ziggy Hood posted pictures of his transformation and it didn't translate to on the field success, much rather have all the LB's work on form and technique. Like Peezy says you can't just work on blitzing one day a week it has to be an all the time deal.

This is what I would do if I was GM... for what it's worth

See if Harrison wants to come back and sign him at a decent price ( he probably won't take the minimum)

I would Sign moats again...really like him...solid depth guy

Let worilds test the market to see what his asking price is and if it around 5 mil per over a 3-4 year period I would offer him a contract

Draft 4-3 DE or OLB in 1 of the first 3 rounds --- have to start doing some research on college guys

Are there any potential FA out there for them to break the mold? With the O at their peak snd Ben getting up there, it's win now mode. I don't see Moats, JJ, draft pick being near enough to be competitive defensively.

Joe Starkey's article is right on and sees it the same as I do.

Also need to make some changes with DL scheme. It hasn't been good for a while now.if we want to go further in the playoffs this defensive scheme has to change.

We had good talent on defense when we beat Arizona in our last Super Bowl win. Yet we were torched by Arizona offense much of the game and we were fortunate to win with 2 great plays by Harrison and Ben.

The Super Bowl against Green Bay we were also torched by their passing offense. Our defense hasn't got much better.
You cannot have you D backs 12 yards deep and you only need 5 yards for a 1st down. With our pass rush so bad when is the last time we saw a corner or safety blitze? Why do we have our outside linebackers drop into pass coverage so much and get outmatched in pass coverage, this is not their strength. Can we ever stop a tight end in passing situation?

It has also been said that if Sherman from Seattle would of came to the Steelers he would of sat his 1st year, played special teams his 2nd year and in his 3rd year he would of played in the nickle defense. There is something wrong with this when other teams have guys start the 1st year and make the pro bowl. DL was great in the beginning and very innovative with schemes and blitzes, but has not been good for a while now.

i think DL stays, but his defense is really outdated and needs fixing. In case he does leave and Butler gets the job, that would also scare me unless he makes the necessary changes "not sure he will as DL understudy".

I'm sorry, Coach LeBeau has to go. He himself said the scheme has remained the same. Does anyone think under LeBeau that it will change? This Defense needs change and not just players. The scheme started taking a nose dive after the 2008 season. Now with all his safety blankets almost gone and should be what will we see? Cam Thomas like players? I appreciate all that Dick LeBeau has brought to the Steelers but like Troy, Ike, Keisel, the time has come for a fresh approach. Is it Butler? The guy has been waiting, and waiting...or will he just be a carbon copy? I would give him the shot and see if he can fix this broken Defense...

Heard on the radio this morning: Harrison saying that his body held up better than he thought and that he feels better than he did 3 years ago and would like a chance to come back.

I say give him a chance. He's the best OLB on the team. Unfortunately, that's not a good thing since we have a first rounder at ROLB and a second rounder at LOLB.

Definitely. And I have to say it, does it seem like we are drafting LB's now more in the mold of a 4-3, Tampa 2 defense? Shazier, Jones? I think these two would have great success in that scheme.
    Heyward McCullers McClendon Tuitt
    Shazier Timmons Jones
think either Shazier or Jones would be above average lining up on TE side.

Agree if Harrison wants to play, let him, since he is the best we got. Also okay to sign Moats cause he will be the next best OLB when Worilds leaves. Not sure if he is not better then Worilds now.

I don't see Jarvis being a double digit sack guy, he doesn't have the strength to bull rush or the speed to beat O-linemen. When he reported to camp this past season he said the team didn't want him to get bigger just stronger, I'm not sure I buy that excuse.

I agree, had he stayed healthy he definitely would have had more sacks. How many more, tough to tell. In part, I think the schemes that they use just don't work anymore. As a team, sacks were few to come by. Ben would get sacked 5 times and the D would have maybe 1 sack. They didn't pressure Flacco at all during the playoff game. No pressure results in many of those 3rd down pick ups the Rats had. I expect given a healthy year next year, that JJ will put up better numbers (per snap) than these past 2 years.

True, on the TD were Harrison gets blocked just as he's about to make a play, it's a great example of what you mention. There's nothing fooling the the Guard on that play so he's standing there with plenty of time to turn around and see Harrison about to get the strip sack. If he's occupied or taken out of the play by confusion, Harrison gets the strip sack and the Game takes on a different tone....

Teams have the blitzes figured out and only a great individual effort causes plays to happen in the Steelers defense now. Heyward blowing up the center twice is another. You can't just rely on an individual winning his match-up 50% of the time. The scheme needs a little tweeking.

Pernell McPhee from Baltimore would be a great signing. He's 26, 280 lbs and had 7.5 sacks despite playing less than half the defensive snaps. I would imagine we wouldn't be able to afford him though. Man this team really **** the bed with some of these extensions and signings, Gilbert, Allen, Mitchell. Still eating Woodley's dead money and will probably hafto do the same with Troy and Heath.

Didn't we cover this with Bell, how bulking up or sliming down can be a positive and a negative. I seem to remember long conversations during training camp about this not to mention two seasons of Ziggy Hood the work out warrior who could push his man 5 feet backwards but couldn't move him left or right.

JJ needs to do something different. I think he has pretty good football instincts but he just gets overpowered.

Jarvis definitely needs to get stronger though. Not only to set the edge in the run game, but he gets swallowed up my tackles if he tries to bull rush them head on. Yeah you don't want to lose speed, but he needs the extra strength in my opinion.
