Wow, not to throw a massive wrench into this, especially after I already made my vote and argument, but Daniel Jeremiah has Blacklock ranked at 19. Damned.

    Updated

I was about to throw out another name for safety, Alohi Gilman, ND and his teammate for edge, Julian Okwara .

Alohi would pretty much signify the end of Edmunds though, which probably isn’t a bad thing, just a waste of a 1st rd pick if they give up on him that fast.

Gilman would have been a top safety off the board if he came out last year, didn’t have as good as 2019 season but still a heck of a player. Not a single high but very good 15 yards out and playing down hill. Very smart, great instincts.

@Blast Furnace do we have an estimated date/time that we will be calling it? I'd like to watch a bit of film tonight and/or tomorrow AM.

Based on what little film I've watched so far, both Winfield and Blacklock look like legit 1st round talents to me. Good football players.

    my official vote:

    Ross Blacklock DT TCU

too much value to pass up, in the real draft he's most likely going in the first round.

For those advocating Blacklock, how do you see him fitting into our defense at 290lbs? Is the fact he missed the entire 2018 season concerning?

My vote goes for Blacklock. Injury concerns aside I see him causing disruption and from what I've seen will immediately make us better versus the run

    Winfield is my official vote.

They need a safety for many reasons. The two biggest reasons are that they lack depth at the position and they need an upgrade over Edmunds. That would also allow them to use Edmunds to take on some of the role Barron played last season.

Blacklock missed most of 2018 with achilles injury.
Winfield missed time in both 2017 and 2018 due to "injuries" (no specifics)

Blacklock played at 315 lbs his sophomore year, he just decided to slim down and lose 25 lbs during his rehab year and come back to play at 290 lbs because he felt it made him quicker.

he definitely has the frame to easily gain some pounds back and play at over 300 lbs and he ran a 4.90 at the Combine which is fantastic for a man his size. he's a relentless pass rusher, and should be able to work his way into our rotation right away. with Tuitt being frequently injured, Alualu being in what is most likely his last season, Heyward not getting any younger and McCullers being mediocre at best Blacklock would be a great replacement for Hargrave who if you remember played at only 305 lbs.

According to NFL.com Winfield's injuries were hamstrings.

Another reason to go Blacklock imo. History of hamstring injuries doesn't bode well for a position where being quick out of the blocks can both a) define success and b) increase wear and tear on said hamstring.

Further I very much doubt Blacklock is on the board when we pick for real. When I was looking at my picks for the Dolphins in our draft I was considering Blacklock at 39 as I didn't expect Kinlaw to drop to 18

if we're actually trying to predict who the Steelers will draft with their Round 2 pick, Blacklock realistically will be long gone.

but in this scenario, he is by far the best value pick.

I initially had mentioned Cushenberry at this spot because in the actual draft, I think he'd be much more realistic. But if Blacklock were to fall this far, there's no denying the value he'd be. Therefore I vote for:

    Blacklock

Actually hamstring in 2017, foot in 2018. He was fully healthy in 2019, and his film pops.

I have nothing against the Blacklock pick and if he ends up here that is fine my only thought about him right here is this. We have a crowed house already right Cam, Tuitt(for how long lol), Worm, Buggs, Alualu and for whatever reason Big Dan. We play this system where we only use this spot 30-40% of the time. So we need safety on the field more and what do we have there to back up Mincah and TE....Dangerfield.

The more I look at this the more safety is becoming my biggest need. I feel there are some nice guys later to fill our DT/NT need like Agim that passing on a guy like Winfield here would be a mistake.

Either way we are getting a good player here in Blacklock or Winfield:
