Tender would have cost at least $2m, he will be a loss on special teams but he hasn’t exactly set the world on fire on the edge.

They now have no depth at all behind TJ and Highsmith. We can add OLB to the list of urgent draft needs.

They’ll let him test the market, doubt he’ll get 2 million, maybe he’ll be back on a cheaper contract.

Not a huge loss if he is not. He has had several years to develop, he’s a special teams guy at this stage as far as I am concerned. They were likely going to draft somebody anyway, need to pick up a veteran or UDFA as well assuming they’ll be keeping four.

Smith is a free agent, probably finished in the league. I think he was on the Seahawks practice squad for a while

I actually had high hopes 4 this guy.
    Ah well.
Sometimes I think guys are just happy being in the NFL, and not beings great.
    It's like...I'm in the NFL....Ive made it.
Hell ...I might have done the same with the same chance....so ....I'll shut up.

One of those camp stories that people get hyped about. He’s a good ST player though and need those guys too and he knows the system, worth bring back if he doesn’t sign elsewhere.

Dead wood. They've had a shed full of similar players that HCMT seemed to love for whatever reason. He's had more chances than he's deserved to make an impact, about time they moved on from him.

Couldn't stay healthy, time to move on from him give someone else
    a chance to make 750K/Year.

Yeah after a splash in preseason he disappeared to the special teams which isn't bad but not worth 2 mill.

As stated he might be back regardless on at a cheaper price.

Thus far I'm liking the Steelers front office moves with limited cap space.

I was so so with bringing Ben back but the dude is my age so I'd rather not think he's washed up and old

Off injured and has been a disappointment. Possibly using that comp pick for an OLB.

Special teams and depth do matter unfortunately he’s just a luxury at this point
