I know, I know, we didn't take care of business. BUT how on earth was that play not reviewed in the ST game. In field goal range for KC but we'll give em forward progress and no fumble.

Officiating around the league has been worse than usual this year and among many other things it directly cost us a playoff spot.

Damn it Brown, why did you step out of bounds!

I gotta admit that seemed awfully convenient to me. You gotta at least LOOK at that don't you? I mean who runs a fake FG at the 29 in OT when facing off against defensive scrubs. It just looks odd to me. If that is ruled a TD for KC the whole playoff picture changes.

I guess the refs didn't think they needed it. Reid could have called T/O to give them some time to review it but he didn't.

It was a little bit suspicious that they never even replayed it on the live broadcast that I can remember.
Granted the Steelers are the one that cost themselves a spot in the playoffs, but the officials still should have reviewed the spot.

Did his helmet come off before the ball came out, or after? Reviewable.
Did his helmet come off before he got the first down, or after? Reviewable.

Am I wrong about either of those? I don't think so, but let me know if I am.

A case could be made for any possible combination of those things happening. It was a mess. In a situation where you know the coach can't throw the challenge flag and it's all on you (refs), HOW do you not take another look?

The Steelers have only themselves to blame for losing 8 games, but nevertheless, they could easily be in the playoffs if the refs had reviewed that play. Even if they just rule that Weddle was short, KC can kick a FG and end the game that way.

A crazy close, crazy play with a crazy level of importance for the entire playoff picture, with so many crazy variables, and they don't even bother taking a look to see if they got it right. I don't get it.

they review everything else so I was shocked. I mean if a wr catches a ball and they even think there is a chance it hit ground they review it.

This play just blew bye like the wind. No sideline argument and no referee meeting. suspicious

The reviewed the play against San Diego in 2008 when we scored as time expired even though we were already winning, but they didn't review the play from today. That's absolutely scandalous.

Please, somebody here give me an explanation as to what happened on that fake punt. If a ref is going to give an offensive player more forward momentum with the ball than he's entitled to, then shouldn't a defensive player have just as much right to the ball during that time ? What happened there ? Why not even bring out the chains because it seemed close regardless ? No replay ? No explanation ? If that happens in KC the refs at the very least give us an explanation.

A fake punt deep in your own territory, in OT and with your playoff hopes on the line was suicide in the first place. When did the whistle blow ? Just terrible officiating as far as I'm concerned. I can only assume that the Ref convinced himself that he blew his whistle before the Kansas City player stripped it and ran it in for a TD. Shameful, downright shameful

Watching the replay I think the helmet came off after he had gotten then first down.

Now forward progress IS reviewable when it concerns a TD or a first down.

    Should have been looked at.

Just figured out the kick in the nuts. He fumbled the ball AFTER his helmet came off. And we all know the rules regarding that.

Boned twice in one season by helmets coming off.

Oh well, at least I know that it wasn't a blown call now.

When it happened, I couldn't believe it bc if the pile was still moving and he was credited with the first down, why couldn't a fumble occur? Ball came out before he was ever stopped? I truly thought it would get a look, but, well, that's the way the season went.

If this is the case then I feel a whole lot better about the call. This doesn't mean the ref didn't need to provide an explanation

It hasn't been talked about, but watch the replay, it is the case. Ball is ripped out after helmet is off.

This is absolutely pathetic. There was a huge outcry last year with the replacement refs, but the reality is the regular officials don't do any better. It's time for the NFL to make game officials full-time, compensated employees! This part-time crap isn't working too well!

My largest issue here was that forward progress should have been halted a YD prior to the first down and KC ball. Why is the Ref letting the pile move for what seemed like an eternity ? You see refs blowing the whistle during forward progress within a reasonable period down at the goal line all the time.

This is an extremely informative post. (adds insult to injury) Sadly, if Succup makes a 41 YD routine FG none of this even matters. Great post.

Do you think that, if that game mattered for KC, the refs would have reviewed it?
IMO, the refs were too cautious to call anything that would affect SD's outcome, but weren't really aware that the outcome of the game would matter to other teams (us).

Might be something to that. It was insignificant to KC and it was in San Diego. I truly believe the refs didn't do anything on purpose against the Steelers. Nothing is rigged. But they made 2 mistakes that indirectly screwed over the Steelers.

I always love when the refs completely blow something they they run off the field like it was on fire. As Rich Gannon said, EXPLAIN YOURSELF. We deserve it.
