I don't understand why the Steelers will not let a player wear whatever number he wants as long as the NFL does not object.

First there was rookie TE Darnell Washington wanting to wear number 0 this year, but the steelers shot it down.

Now I just read where Pat Peterson asked the Steelers for a single digit number and they said no. He was told the Steelers do not allow skill position players to wear single digits.

It is funny I could have sworn I saw #8 playing OLB 2 years ago for the Steelers.

I wonder if Pat Peterson asked for his #7 and the Steelers said no to him wearing #7?

Really don't care about the numbers they wear but I was under the impression certain positions got set numbers. Like all NFL secondary guys have to have say #30 to #50????? Maybe it was like that many many moons ago?????????????????????????

I guess if the Player really wanted his number he could have put it into his contract and then the team could have signed him or not.

But the Steelers telling Peterson that he can't have a single digit number is a lie. Melvin Ingram played with #8 for the Steelers; Peterson just didn't know the Steelers were lying to him when they made him #20.

The players are not trying to break the NFL rules. The Steelers have their own set of rules; that sometime they break for players... see #8 Melvin Ingram.

If Washington wanted to wear number 0, the NFL would have allowed it.
If Patrick Peterson wanted to wear number #7 the NFL would have allowed it. (He wore #7 in Minnesota last Year)

We are not Minnesota. If He doesn't want to go by Steelers rules....He can go elsewhere. No way You give out Ben's number this soon.

And what about #8 Mark Ingram? What Steeler rule were the Steelers following when they gave Ingram #8?

Telling Patrick Peterson that it was a Steeler rule that they don't give out single digit numbers to skill players was complete bull.

I understand the Steelers telling him he can't wear #7, so why did they have to lie about it?

Just tell him the truth; right now nobody can wear number 7.

And, I did really want to see a Steelers number 0 out there this year. Maybe Washinton's jersey rips before the game and they have to use black duck-tape over the 8 to fix it. :)

Why the need for numbers anymore anyway?
The refs can't remember what number committed a penalty.

other than some number as eligible
just say "this fat fk" is eligible and run the clock

I'm sure Patrick Peterson will survive not getting the number he wants on a team with much more team history and success than anywhere else he has been. If it was that big of a deal to him, it would have been in his contract before he signed it.

They haven’t used 0 in over 70 years and you think a rookie should walk in and demand he be the first

I don’t remember them saying that. I remember Peterson withdrawing the requests after seeing the backlash from fans.

If they did tell him that, Ingram plays a different position, could be a rule that DB’s don’t wear single digit numbers.
