Some day we'll need to know what we have in our own backyard.
We already know what we have (more or less) in Landry Jones, so...

If you were our coach, would you take a shot starting (or playing significant time) J Dobbs?

I’d say we know roughly where Dobbs is at the moment, as well as Jones.

Next year, another training camp etc and that’s when we’ll see the big improvement from this preseason.

I’d be surprised if we didn’t see him at some point in the second half if the game is in the bag though.

No.The off season is for assessment. After this week they are going into the playoffs. Should Ben go down Landry is the next man up. All the reps he can get right now, especially with the ones, are too valuable should that eventuality come to pass.

If Young Landry has to play in the playoffs to say we would be cooked would be an understatement.

I would love to see what Dobbs can do but I get the other side of it as well. LJ is the next man up so give him reps just in case.

Being LJ is the next man up he should get all the reps . Should LJ be the next man up? IMO no, but I don't get a say .

I would like to be pleasantly surprised by Landry. Is it too much to ask for the same relaxed type atmosphere we had on Christmas? I mean, his number one goal should be to throw it to his teammates instead of the Browns. If he does that, with MB, JuJu, Eli, VM, and JJ he should have a better supporting cast than he had last year when he crushed (lol) them. Furthermore, so long as he only throws it to those mentioned above, maybe Ridley, FT, and X as well, but you know, that color uniform, the defense should be able to force the Browns into punts and their own turnovers.

Interesting comments so far. Seems to be a consensus to play L Jones over J Dobbs for this game.

If so, when do you think we should test what we have in Dobbs?
I mean, with Ben's retirement being a possibility, do you feel confident enough going into 2018 with L Jones as starting QB and a sophomore with no NFL experience as a backup?

He did that against the browns in the last game last year, he had 3 TDs and only one INT, he needs the reps this year to be ready for the playoffs as a back up QB, you just never know if Ben gets an injury early in the playoffs or late either way LJ will be the starter so he needs to get ready in this game......

Maybe, maybe not. Last regular season he kept them in the game against the Pats.

He can play well in short bursts. If the running game is working and they are playing any kind of defense, you could win a game with him although I certainly would not want to count on that.

He should play the whole game against the Browns. Get him the reps.

    Preseason.

This week is a game too meaningful to be trying 3rd stringers and too meaningless to be a serious exhibition of what Dobbs would do as a starter.

If he’s what he promises, next year he’ll beat out Jones in camp.

Would love to see what Dobbs can do but as others have pointed out, important for Landry to get reps.

I don't feel confident in either at this point, but we don't see the backups in practice or games. I still think you have to go QB in rnd 1 (unless the board falls way out of our favor for choosing one). I think the team will have a plan B, which means another vet FA if a top guy cannot be obtained in the draft.

For me, the optimal scenario would be get a vet FA and a draft pick and have the 4 of them fight for the top 3 spots. If a capable vet is acquired (Alex Smith) for example, I could see LJ getting the axe and they carry Dobbs and the rook.

If Haley is retained or released, that's a whole new set of circumstances imo.

They will be resting the starters they still won't know what they have when he's throwing or handing the ball off to the bench players vs a garbage team.

If Landry falters, I hope we do see some of Dobbs. See if he has learned anything
    of the Pro game.

Perhaps. However, if he’s successful vs Cleveland without Brown and Bell, and with some other guys like Juju likely getting limited reps, it says something about his ability as a backup.

I feel guilty watching a game where a team could go 0-16. It is like watching a snuff film.
