I hate that the Steelers wasted a first-round draft pick on Edmunds, who should have gone a round or two later, when they could have had an All-Pro inside linebacker. I also know that people like you tend to be fooled every time Edmunds stumbles into a big play, forgetting the fact that he makes them so rarely and that he creates many of the openings in that defense through his incompetence.

By all means, keep making excuses for Edmunds rather than accepting the fact that he is a bust and that was a predictable outcome. It seems to make you feel better, but it doesn't help you understand what is actually going on in the games.

Improving from awful to below average impresses you. How nice.

isn't that what we hope for all of our players? we like to see them improve. go ahead and be condescending all you want but if he was below average last year, why was he on par with mathieu? is he below average as well? c'mon scribe, you can't have it both ways. you have your opinion on him and i have mine and that's what they are opinions. if the steelers do bring him back then i guess you can tell them how below average they are too.

Will you at least admit that Edmunds has been Mr. Dependable? Since his arrival in Pittsburgh I would bet he leads the entire team in defensive snaps.

I remember reading that he did lead all rookies his first year in defensive snaps.

Didn't we also bring in a guy from Green Bay Edmunds rookie year who was supposed to be the starter that ended up being a complete flop?

He wasn't on par with Mathieu. You are being fooled by your desire for him to be better than he is and your refusal to accept that the statistics do not accurately capture the level of those two players.

I absolutely get why they might have to settle for a fall-back option like Edmunds, but they will be worse on defense than they could be adding someone like Mathieu.

How do you measure dependability? Is it just being on the field? Yes, Edmunds is durable. In terms of his level of play, he's not dependable at all.

and yes that is possible. i however don't think the difference is head and shoulders that much different for the difference in money spent. i expected that we draft a safety to compete. i was hoping that was the thought on bringing killebrew back to have some sort of vet presence to have in reserve if the rookie or stiner didn't work out. i know he's mostly for ST's but he played more and more towards the end of the season. edmunds played a huge number of snaps plus ST's. 220+ more snaps then mathieu did during the year. that's a lot of pounding on a body during the season.

    Can they do both?

Actually I think this would be the perfect scenario; Bring back Edmunds on a team friendly deal, and draft a safety.

    Lewis Cine in the 2nd.

sure it's possible but i warn against a safety is a safety. cine is more of a free safety. we really need a strong safety. pitre or cross come to mind for me. these two can play either. they have ball skills and can tackle well near the LOS. they have speed where many strong safeties do not, and many strong safeties are somewhat lacking in really good ball skills. remember we have norwood as a backup free safety. we need a good strong safety and those two are probably at the top of that list. brisker is a SS. daxton hill and cine are FS. could they interchange? sure but not their normal situational position. depends what defense they played more of at those schools too. i'd like one from a 3-4 type that has seen this type of defense to hit the ground running.

For the sake of beating a dead horse, Mathieu has already lost more instincts than Edmonds will ever have. I agree that stat are deceiving but a lot of those tackles are 15-30 yds down field after a terrible angle at the point of attack, a JOP (jump on pile) tackle. Passes defended are usually terrible throws, the guy lucks out once and a while and catches a tip ball or a over throw. He is dependable but totally a first round bust, if the money doesn't work with the badger than I would have to think that there is worse we can do than Edmonds but really not much worse.

So, the teams that drafted a LB that year should they have known Leonard was going to be an All-Pro?

Nobody should have known he was an All-Pro, but he was the next inside linebacker on the board and that position had absolutely killed the Steelers after they lost Shazier. Edmunds, for all his athletic ability, has very limited upside. He's just not a guy who makes big plays. He didn't even make many his final season in college, but the Steelers fell in love with the big, fast guy from the big school and it cost them.

You’re right. Edmunds’ film his senior year was AWFUL. He plays now like did then: stiff and lacking instinct. That pick never made sense.

Well, that explains that. Someone is sending the comments from the Tyran Matthieu thread over here, and sending the comments about Tyreek Hill to the Tyran Matthieu thread.

Teams do that all the time take the ht/wt speed guy from a big school in the first round, sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn't.

I did say that when He was coming out. He's so stiff it's like His shoulder, and Hips are welded together, but When they drafted Him....I just Hoped I was wrong.
