I actually liked Tomczak. He wasn't a good QB, but he never said he was nor did he act like he was beter than anyone else. He was a dependable back-up, won a big game against Philly in 1994, took the hardest shot I have ever seen a QB take and still bounced back, and more importantly: he was one of the very best kick holders I have ever seen and that alone made him valuable on those 90s Cowher teams that relied on Anderson/Johnson kicks as much as Foster TDs.

I always didn't like him because he wasn't good, but one play really changed my opinion on him as a kid. My memory's a little hazy and I couldn't find anything online about it, so if anyone remembers better than me I'd love to hear what exactly happened. But there was some really outrageous call, (I think maybe a no-call on what should have been a PI, or maybe they called the receiver out of bounds when he was really in) and he flipped out and ran down to the ref and started screaming at him. The ref turned his back and Mike and then Mike touched him on the shoulder to turn him back around and continue screaming, and he was ejected for it. At the time I thought that was a stupid rule because he meant no harm, but now I know it's an important one. I just remember being surprised at how much fire he had inside him, because I didn't think he had it in him. I was glad he was standing up for his team to that level.
