Yeah, you’re right. That was actually an issue last season but I don’t remember who, refs got it wrong.

That sure is crazy that you have to declare an onside kick ahead of time. What's next, announcing a corner route to Pickens?

The longest return in the HOF game came out to the 31. If the ball is kicked out of the end zone it comes out to the 30. That is probably the safest thing to do for the kicking team.

The Lions got screwed out of a win against the Cowboys because of the refs screw up. It affected their seeding in the playoffs.

I'm old school so it doesn't do it for me. So much has changed for safety sake but the warriors on the field sign up for football . I can't say I wouldn't change my mind with the new kickoff rules as we've had the small sample size. I really hope it becomes exciting vs a small percentage of excitement with the ball just ending up at the 30 or thereabouts. It seems to take on a fourth and one feeling with a loaded box. One might pop, which will mean a score. Will it pop more than returns do now? I would say probably because there's nobody back to run them down if they do bust the line. Let's hope for the more excitement scenario. As always IMHO.

I'm pretty neutral on the new KO rules. It does seem like it could lead to more big returns and scores on KO's. But the new onside rules totally suck. Can only be in 4th qtr, you have to be behind, and you have to declare it. WTF was wrong with the onside rules before? What are they trying to accomplish with the change? If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

I was wrong, this is so stupid

One good thing is this is just a trial run this year, they could scrap the whole thing after the season.

Who knows, maybe ends up being good but I’m not feeling it.

I'm actually pretty excited for this change. Kickoffs as they were have probably generated more injuries than points. It's become exceptionally rare in recent years that a team score directly off kickoff return and 9 times out of 10, it will result in a spot on the field between the 25 and 35. I'm kind of interested in seeing the sorts of potential strategic considerations that teams will now have to make now with these (fairly radical) rules changes in place. It will surely be a race to see which team can most effectively exploit them, you know, before the legalistic cement hardens, as it were.

Remember the kicker is 30 yards away from the rest of the players on the field. If they didn't announce it to the other team then the kicker could just squib the ball 10 yards and jump on it.

I think the ball has to land in the kick zone or the other team takes over at the 30. If you just squib it and jump on it, it's the other team's ball.
I do not know this for sure. Just my understanding up to now.

No that's true, I was pointing out that is why there can't be an onside kick.

i got an idea. up the roster to 75 guys 53 regular and 22 special teams only guys. make them kick off from the 20 and run full blast down the field into each other. that would make for some good TV. :hehehe::smiley1::cool:

The Steelers would have had no chance in SB XXX without that surprise on side kick. This new rule of announcing to the other team and only in the 4th qtr while being behind in points is one of the dumbest rules in the last half century of football.

So does that mean the ball isn't live on a kickoff now? If a defender happens to get to the ball before a return team player picks it up, then it's just dead?

I think the ball is live if it lands in the "landing zone", from the goal line up to the 20 yard line. There is also a "set up" zone from the 30-35 yard line that the receiving team must be in. The kicker can not cross the 50 yard line until the ball is touched. And the kicking team is allowed a 12th player to hold the ball in case of windy conditions. After the ball is kicked the holder must run off the field immediately and is not allowed to run down field to participate in the play. Pretty easy to follow lol.

That position should make all the girls swoon. Yea I'm in the NFL. I'm a kick off holder. You want my autograph? At least the backup QBS get to hold a clipboard. This guy has to hold a tee. It's like the backup catch can guy in Nascar. I want that job making 800,000 a year playing Lucy holding the ball for Charlie Brown.:roflmao::cool:

I just saw a penalty on the Giants kicker tonight. His kickoff only went to the 24 yard line so the ball automatically was moved to the 40. So no more squib kicks either, the ball has to clear the 20 yard line or the receiving team starts at the 40.
