look what happened to the 49ers before Harbaugh and after Harbaugh became the coach. the 49er defense was terrible but in one season, they've become the best defense in the league, in my opinion. A coaching change can make a bad defense into a pretty good one. Lebaeu must go.

The problem at this point isn't just coaching, it's a lack of talent. Our superstars are ailing and are on the downside of their careers and most of our other defensive players, including our recent first round draft picks, appear to be mediocre to average at best. Where are the difference makers on this defense? They aren't there. Time for a new DC and a rebuilding process.

Someone to bring pressure without having to blitz would be nice. Either Woodley or Harrison needs to generate more consistent pressure. Can't run those ILB stunts all the time as the only way to bring the heat.

You think we're having trouble now? Just start firing coaches in the middle of the season and see what happens. It's not like the are going to change the system mid season, bottom line is play calling and players are going to have to execute better if we are to have success

I think this is the perfect time for the Lebeau era to end,( at the end of this season) his weapons are pretty much done, time to bring in a new system with new players so they learn Butlers system not Lebeau's.

I'm not opposed to making a change at the end of the season if things continue they way they are going. We need to find out if it's the players or the coach though.

True, but I think Lebeau has reached that stubborn phase. Like Clark said the D has become too predicable. Players aren't moving around before the snap like they used too, Lebeau has lost his mojo.

People you need certain type ball players to play certain type defenses.
For example NY Giants, they have great DL that can rush the passer,
Do you see one on our current roster? So as you see, without a plan you just can't change defenses
and this is what is so scary to me( do the Steelers have a master plan)
because I do not see playmakers on our current defensive roster
Harrison, Timmons (when he decides to play), Clark , (Troy use to be?) Woodley? (when he decides to play) So lets face it
Troy and Silverback, Clark in twighlight years , what type of defense are we going to go to?
And where will get the players from. I don't see to many JJ Watts, JPP out there, do you?

Yes, you need certain types of players to run certain systems, but when you don't have those players, you need to adapt. Ziggy Hood could be great at rushing the passer if we ever ran any type of a hybrid defence, but we don't. We stick with the same thing over and over despite it not working whatsoever.

You can't do the same thing over and over and expect different results. Lebeau needs to use the players in a way that they will succeed.

It's time for Lebeau to go, and he can take Tomlin with him.

After reading all this. It boils down to 1 thing and that is, it is up to the Rooney's on who stays and who goes. Shoulda, Woulda, do not cut it. So do not worry about it. The owners will take care of this situation. And remember we are dealing with one of the best NFL organizations in history. They will find a way to turn this team around. Maybe not this year but next year their will be some changes. RELAX.

Turn this team around? You make it sound as if we have had a long run of terrible seasons. We are five games into the season I repeat five games! Calm down!!!!!!!!!

It's just sad that it has to end like this. Lebeau really stuck around about two years too long. His scheme has been decoded and he is seemingly no longer able to adjust. NFL OCs have his number and he now appears to be overmatched in many scenarios. It pains me to say it, but it's true.

It is a little bit of everyone's fault IMO. The players aren't performing on the level they should. The coaches doing things like having your best pass rusher with a bad knee chasing after the TE on 3rd down with the game on the line and an obvious passing situation. Having games where your own players say you are predictable means a couple of things. First, it means that we are predictable as evidenced by the current results. Second, it may signify that the players have lost confidence in the system.

If number 2 is correct, then this team is in trouble...at least for this year.

In reality, I don't think this is JUST about the coach's play calling or the players inability to execute the system. I think much of it is due to lack of leadership. No A. Smith. No Farrior. Farrior to me is the biggest loss. Foote is a big step down and even with Farrior being a step slower than he used to be, he KNEW the system and knew when to audible out of a call. Combine that with Troy being out, Harrison being out, now Woodley being out. There really isn't that one guy you can lean on right now to make the play.

I personally am not under the impression that we don't have enough talent, as I think we do have enough talent, even on the list that Freak has provided.

We are going to see even more changes this coming offseason. Hampton will be gone. Harrison will be gone. Foote will be gone. Ike may be gone. Does the list continue? Maybe, but it would not surprise me if we don't use all but a pick or 2 on the defensive side of the ball.

maybe some talent but do you see somebody that can be a team changer or going to probl , in this list there is some average and some bust only (beside spence that we don't know)

Tomlin started in '07 so might as well include that draft. #1 Timmons, #2 Woodley. The jury is still out on some of those picks, but on the offensive side I'd say they selected some absolute winners in those drafts.

yes they are the best defensive player they drafted in the first year maybe tomlin had less voice vs colbert because he was new ( i say maybe ) but from then we have not drafted /developed any special player , just wanted to say we are having problems rebuilding the defense with these drafts and i didn't mention the late round picks like carter silvester gay frederick rashon harris .....could be the scouting team too

This list looks at this point like a bunch of mediocre to below average defensive players. I realize the jury is still out on some of these players but for the most part they've shown that they are serviceable players but nothing spectacular. Timmons will flash on occasion then fizzle. I'm even getting concerned about Woodley. Are these nagging injuries going to plague his career? Bottom line is our top defensive picks over the last 6 years have been disappointments.

I just want to say that the 49er defense was quite good and on its way up a couple years before Hairball getting there. They had other issues with the coach and offense etc. but they had a rising defense for sure.

From what I recall, the defence was awful until Mike Singletary came to town. He did a very good job at turning the defence around, although Harbaugh definitely deserves some credit for continuing to make the defence better and better.

Agree with Freaks list, average to mediocre at best players. But another problem is the defense system does not change with with our average players.

You cannot run the same system with the ziggy's, heyward, Mundy's, and have injured players all over the place and expect the same results without changing your scheme somewhat.

What bothers us the most, is don't the coaches see these guys in practice every day, and that Harrison can't run right now, so don't put him in pass coverage! Why can't we teach Ike to turn and play the ball as you see the same thing over and over?
Can't you see in practice that Mundy cannot change direction on the field? I don't know why they don't but shouldn't you see what the problem is with the defensive line even getting a small or just a little pass rush with the #1 picks on the line; ziggy's, heyward, Hampton?.

I think we are in trouble with this defense, with both players and type of players that does not match our scheme, and the coaches that do not change or tweak the system to match the players. If you got great players it doesn't matter what scheme you run, but we don't have great players there anymore!

I think missing on Ziggy and Worilds hurt us the most.

Think about how devastating losing James/Woodley is to our pass rush. Our corners have never been good, we just usually get the pass rush to not need superior corner talent. Now that we have basically 0 pass rush we're being exposed. We're 18th in the league in sacks. Unacceptable.

i think all starts when we passed on avril to take bruce davis (everybody here were yelling at the tv) than you wouldn't have the need to pick worilds and we could have got sean lee

 It's pretty bad that everyone who follows the draft knows when a dude is going to suck before he even plays. Not sure what they were thinking when they took him.

I think we need to find a way to get our best defensive players on the field as the way we currently run things has Cam Heyward sitting on the bench too much. Why handicap ourselves?
