A very good decision if Cam can stay healthy. He is a very good Steeler--- Hope he becomes a super Steeler--IE... winning a Superbowl.

This is not a bad extension, in guaranteed money it really only extends his current deal by a year, if injuries become a factor it s easy to get out of.

Love Cam Heyward but he’s no spring chicken. Not sure he can stay healthy. On a side note. These contracts just keep getting bigger and so does the costs to attend events. Many of us will be staying home more often.

$29 million in new money for the additional two years. That’s really not bad at all. It’s probably set up in a way where he could retire or cut after the 2025 season with only a $5 million cap hit (prorated third of the signing bonus).

The Steelers have yet to release the terms, but this seems like a good deal for both sides, presuming of course Heyward can stay healthy and reasonably productive the next three seasons.
    • The $15M APY is fair by way of valuation metrics per OTC, and a couple of tiers removed from the current top-line IDLs.
    • The structure as reported thus far suggests it's not very restrictive should either side need to move on:
      • $15M of the $16M guaranteed is via signing bonus, so $5M/year for cap purposes
      • I don't know if the signing bonus includes any base from 2024, but assuming it doesn't, it leaves $14M in base salary spread over 2025/26
      • So those two years would look something like $5M (bonus) + $7M (base) = $12M cap hit

I still stand by he has injury and age questions. I'm just glad the Steelers have it where they can get out of it easy.

Can he only do 3rd downs? Can he play into the post season?

It’s one of those things where he’s the face of our D, so it’s not overly extending us but let’s hope he stays healthy. Fair deal.

The disappearing act in the postseason is most bothersome to me. Will it somehow magically change now that he's a year older? Oh well, it looks like the Steelers can move on with very little pain.
Steelers need to draft his replacement next year.

Why didn't they (Front Office) front-load this deal? Don't we have too much cap space righ now? Like extend him, but accelerate it into 2024 with much lower hits in remaining years?

I was reading recently we're too low in payroll and will have to spend more than we may want to next year to avoid penalties or something along those lines.

Maybe I misread the article (here or elsewhere, not sure).

If we aren't bringing in anyone of big value, take the hit this year to lower hits in future when a big payday may be due a new QB or when we might want to extend out Najee, Herbig (LB) or some other low paid grunt with upside.

I just think THIS is the year to place some unwanted future hits on the cap. Provide more flexibility down the road.

This new deal drops Heyward's salary to a little over a million for this season, they gave him a 14 million bonus for 2024. It gives the team some more cap space now, maybe they will sign a few more guys to extensions.

Dumb move if you ask me. I doubt if Cam makes it through half the season without getting injured again. The Steelers have a weakness for hanging on to their players, or signing them from other teams that are over the hill. If they knew how to draft players and actually develop them, they wouldn't have to do this time and time again

I partially agree with this. Cam has a history lately of losing games to Father Time and it would be easy money going with the tide here. I do like Cam and what he brings to the community but on game day is where he really needs to show up for this team. Especially if they happen to make the playoffs somehow. 37 or 38 years old is no place to throw your money towards a NT.

He was due $16 million this year anyway, so they basically parlayed that into a 3 year deal, where the $16 million is now guaranteed in the form of a bonus, which will be amortized over the three year contract.

For those who think he is done and over the hill, this contract seems to give us an easy out in years 2 or 3 (knowing we would take a cap hit of $5 million in either of those two years).

I’d say this is a fair deal for both sides. If he plays like he did pre-injury, then this seems like a good deal for us. If not, the downside isn’t too bad.

I'm not saying it's a terrible deal from a financial standpoint, that's if he still has anything left in the tank and can remain healthy, but I still think that money could've been used more wisely. Can't blame Cam for wanting to get one last deal in before he rides off into the sunset, and the Steelers seemed happy to oblige, so good for him

The deal if in so he gets injured they can get out of it next season. The signing bonus is 15 and he will only be paid 1 mill this season saving 9 mill and can spread out the bonus. Money they can use at the trade deadline. Plus they are going to extend Freiermuth I believe.

Don't get me wrong I wanted him to hit the FA market after this season. But hopefully he can give them this season and next to mentor a D Lineman who I believe they will take with the 2nd round pick.
