The 'Mel Blount Rule' is all you need to know.
According to Eisen, no CB prior to 1980 is in the top 5?
    Ha!
I'm so flabbergasted by his top 5, I don't even know what to say next.
Maybe he plays too much Madden?

Even considering we're Steeler fans and would love to put Mel in the top 5, the WORST case would be top 10-12.
And, no, Ty Law, Neon and Revis would not be there.
    D. Green, yes.
    R. Woodson, of course, as a Steeler's fan - below Blount? hmmm...

Would love to see Neon play pre-mid1970's, if he would actually make the team.

yes, mel was the best CB in the 1970's. But there was one receiver that killed Blount. Dave Logan of the Browns always had bid games against Blount. He was not fast but a big receiver that match Blount's size. I saw at least 4 games that Logan had a field day against Blount. I'm not sure why Blount had a difficult time because Logan was NOT a speedster but more of a possession type of receiver. do people remember those days?

Agree about Sanders. Rod could do it all. Man, Carnell Lake was pretty damn good IMHO. I think he is close to Troy's level with everything he could do.

I tell you what with the rules in place now Mel Blount would not be able to play. He owned whomever he went up against and several times forced guys to leave games due to his knockout hits. He was not a dirty player but someone people feared. I would say he had the size of Sherman in Seattle with the attitude and hits of a Ronnie Lott. And the cover skills of Deion. He could do it all, cover, tackle and wipe people out if need be.

He was and still is awesome! :)

Yes! He was good!!! No, he was very good!!! No, he was GREAT!!! I can't use enough superlatives to describe Blount so I won't even try. He is also a class act off the field and has operated a ranch for troubled youth since retirement. They just don't make them like Mel anymore.

It's so hard to compare players from different eras. Without a doubt, Blount is one of the best to ever play the game, but part of why he is one of the all time greats is that his style of play was perfect for his era.

Mel Blount would have teased Troy about not hitting the Jet`s reciever hard enuff!!!:butcher:
Leg twitches, or not, the dude still held onto the ball!!! (Although I have NO idea how...)
    Seriously, that man was AWESOME!!!
Agreed, that he would have a hard time with today`s rules, but he is part of the reason they had to start "protecting" recievers.
And he did have a size advantage that he wouldn`t enjoy now... but still...
The man literally changed the game!
    Kids today.... SMDH... LOL!
    GO STEELERS!!!

He was a physical corner, which has become a necessity now. Since somuch of the passing game is based on short, timing routes, you need big, physical CBs to knock WRs off their routes at the LOS.

Somehow, I can't see Wes Welker getting much of a release against Mel. Even today.

I few facts your nephew needs to KNOW:

    He's in the HOF!!
He was the 1st CB to be Named Defense MVP!!
They had to change the rules to stop him and smugly named it after him!!
He proved the rule change was a joke as he STILL DOMINATED after the rule change!!!
He could cover a WR like Deion, He could tackle like Lambert and he could hit like Tatum, Never ever has there been a more complete Corner, and that includes Rod Woodson!!

Wow thnks for the video link. Brought tears to my eyes. Took me back to the years my Grandpa would watch games, stomping his feet and hooting/hollering, while I was jumping around on the bed behind him. Good stuff.

I do remember Dave Logan and now that you mention it, he did seem to have good games against the Steelers. Not sure he went against Blount always, though. Some of those big games could have been against J.T. Thomas, who was a pretty good CB in his own right.

I guess mine would be something like this but the order would be too hard to pin down.

    1. Mel Blount
    2. Deion (because I just personally LOVED him UNTIL he went to the cowgirls and then fell back in love when he left)
    3. Rod Woodson
    4. Charles Woodson (he's one of my faves of all time and he kept Peyton from getting the Heisman)
    5. Champ Bailey (because Deion says he's one of the greatest "ever ever")

Hey how do you rate my rating TTF? Just curious is all. It's really kind of a tough list to make. Everyone on my list is a Hall of Famer or will be soon enough.

    Here's my list...

    Mel blount
    rod woodson
    darrell green
    not revis
    not deion
    not revis
    not Deion
    Maybe deion
    definitely not revis
    charles woodson
    champ bailey
    cromartie
    still not revis

of course 3/4 of it haha material... But not revis and as good as Deion was, he wasn't near a complete DB so it is what it is. I watched Steve young smash sanders and make him fumble after a young pick! SOFT!!!
