I have a know it all nephew who is at the age he cant be told anything by me. I need some of the guys here who are old enough to back me up. I have told him and keep telling him that mel blount is one of the best corners to ever play. because he isn't on madden or ever mentioned when the talking heads talk about top corners, he thinks I am being a homer. he heard rich eisen say for his money deion, ty law, Darrell green, revis, and woodson are the best to ever play. I told him rich eisen is an idiot. blount is top 5 on any list as far as I am concerned and the best to ever wear black and gold period. I will let him read your post so come on. please help me.lol

When someone (Blount) forces the league to change its rules and start the trend of courting towards the dancing darling diva receivers, no questions remain. The guy was a beast. Remind your nephew who his or Rich's favorites currently are, about the guy who those cats grew up admiring, and currently whine about when they are flagged for trying to play defense.

Blount was so good at it, that they had to make it...
    dare I say fair?

I am old enough to know, and actually had lunch with Mel and a few other steelers in the mid 70's in a small luncheonette they used to go to just outside of Three Rivers Stadium. He was the leanest, toughest, smoothest, defensive back you would want to see. At about 6' 3" tall about 200 lbs with hardly no body fat, he could stay step by step, (bump and run) and manhandle almost all the receivers he faced for the whole length of the field.

Thats when the Mel Blount rule came into play and you could bump and run for only 5 yards from the line of scrimmage.

If anybody says that he is not in the top 5 all time defensive backs, then they don't know what they are talking about, or they never saw him play consistently.

One of the best D backs of all time...:applaud:

    THIS!!!

He was the current build of a DB that resembles the monsters in Seattle that everyone is clamoring for, and those boys ain't got jack on Mel!

There you go, a current day madden comparison for the youngster!

I tried to show him a game I have of the steelers playing the chargers. mel didn't let Charlie joyner off the line for three straight plays. all he said was I cant believe you watched games like this. whats with the picture? he is spoiled with his HD. kids!!!

Blount was a big CB and could, as Bradshaw said in his book, "run like a deer." When rules are changed because of a player's dominance that says it all.

Tell him to look at my name and that will prove your point. Tell him that every time someone gets an "illegal contact" penalty that is called the "Mel Blount Rule". Tell him to ask Drew Pearson's ribs how great Mel Blount was.

When my nephews don't listen to me I tie a 10 foot rope to their left foot/leg and drop them off my mom's back porch which is 20 feet off the ground. When they tell me I am right. I pull em up.

    Which Woodson?

Deion was overrated as a CB. GREAT cover man, maybe the best ever. But he was soft on D otherwise and couldn't tackle a 2 year old.

Now Rod Woodson? In is prime, one of the best I ever saw. He could do it all.

And he was the SECOND best CB the Steelers ever had. ;)

The rest on that list? Good defensive backs. Best ever? Green is up there. The rest? Meh... (Revis' resume is incomplete at the moment)

Even at that you have to take Revis out and put Blount in there. Revis is a product of all those that have gone before him and hasn't done it for nearly as long or as good.

Deion? I'll buy that one. He still wasn't a feared tackler though.

Woodson, most definitely! I remember Blount, but I really got to see (Rod) Woodson play. Anytime you can switch between Safety and Corner and be all-pro at either, you know you're the best!

I would put Charles Woodson on the list of best ever. I would put Blount number 1 though just for the pure impact he had on the position. Also what about Champ Bailey?

My friends call me SUPE thats short for SUPER Best CB to ever play for the black and gold sorry Rod.As many posters have said rule changer, enough said.
Hell the way he looks now, it looks like he could still suit up.SON, HE WAS A GREAT BALL PLAYER. THE STEELERS HAD MANY OF THEM IN THE 70's. One of my all time favorite STEELERS. I patterned my game after him, when iI played thats how much of influence he had on me.

Just tell him that the game is completely watered down these days due to players like Mel Blount, Donnie Shell, Jack Lambert, Jack Youngblood and Howie Long.
Now it's all about offense and FF points.
