Yeah in another thread I found myself telling somebody about the Steelers defense winning the final playoff game in 2011 against the crows to advance the Superbowl. That was clinched by Troy Polamalu's 40 yard interception return. We need a new Troy. And certainly while the strong safety position is in pretty good hands, that skill set is not there. But where I am seeing a lot of the Polamalial skill set is in Nick Herbig and potentially Joey Jr. Sure they are taller, and a little slower, but the moves are there in both cases, other than the Superman flying around thing. And Herbig does some of that. I'd like to see those guys in a lot of 3rd and medium to long situations.

There are exactly zero similarities between Troy and JPJ. I don't know what similarities you're seeing but I don't see it. Not a knock on JPJ at all, I want to see more of him, but he's nothing like Troy.

Guys like Troy rarely come along.

Yeah it's going to take at least two guys to replicate Troy. The similarity I see between Joey Jr and Troy is the most mauling pass coverage since Mel Blount - and the rule of the same name. Potentially.

So, what would be your suggestion, in light of the tools available, to gain the desired effect, the desired effect being not allowing the other team to pick up the third and long in the flat or by scramble every time?

One thing we have sure learned is pulling Kwan Alexander into coverage isn't going to work. He won't stay home.

Why not throw in an Ed Reed, Ryan Shazier, and with a little bit of the Jack's (Ham and Lambert), might as well add some Rod Woodson and Donnie Shell and we might get a defensive player or two!!

Yes it would be nice to have any and all of the above, in most any combination, problem is those guys are rare, that we that many HOF'ers, and a couple at the same time is also rare. It's a different era, while nearly all, if not all of the men listed above could develop in today's game, the outcome might be very different. So yes we need a Troy, 31 other teams have likely looked for one the last 20 years or so, that's how rare these guys are.

A new coach. We've had the same problems since he was hired.

I would love another Troy. He's maybe my favorite player of all time, but it's unlikely we find a guy like him again.

Troy was very different them most who played that position. When my family goofs around and we make up the best Steeler team if we had all the greats in their prime at same time. Troy has some tough competition since the Steelers have had some amazing players in the secondary the past 55 years.

I think Troy is easily the best safety in Steelers history and there's no close second

Agreed, but I would say he is arguably the best Strong Safety ever to suit up. The things he did were unbelievable.

Well it already happened on the third play of the game. Nobody on Jackson.

I'd have like to seen Porter covering the short pass in the flat and Herbig on spy.

Steelers are missing a presence in the middle of the field. Doesn’t have to be a safety, could be a ilb too.

I feel Holcomb and Kwon actually made a difference today for the first time this season. They are new, so it is hard to say how good they could be here.
