Very versatile. Great measurables and just noticed him while watching the combine. Viewed mostly as a mid-rounder before the combine, so I was very surprised to see reports of him being a day 1 (very optimistic imo) or day 2 selection(realistic). Patriots met with him a ton the night before his pro day. And by all accounts looked great in drills there.

Combine performance was impressive: 4.41 in the 40, 37.5 vertical, 11' broad and 20 reps on the bench.
    That's a bad ass workout! All at 6'1" 220.

First two seasons were at strong safety, his last season was at free safety. Started 13 games in '16 and led the team in tackles with 109, 11 PBUs, and 3 INTs.

I watched all 3 games on DBD and was very impressed. Lined up all over the place. One glaring knock for me was an inability to get off blocks at times, but it's not enough to drop him significantly for me. Sound tackler.

Marcus Williams FS Utah better move over, you got some competition. I might even go round 2 for this guy. Give him a year behind Mitchell and let him acclimate on big nickel. oh yes, turtle likey....

That three cone has me a bit worried though. Not as flexible in his change of direction as he seems to be on tape.

Other than that, I would not mind. Obi is still my status quo for the Steelers draft range.

see i don't mind those numbers because of not just looking at him as a conventional safety but as a hybrid safety/ LB. 3 shaziers if you will but even more versatile.

I don't see Shazier as a hybrid LB/safety at all. He has safety speed, but he's a small, fast LB through and through. His skills (meaning skills, not physical ability) are suited to play near and behind the line of scrimmage, not downfield.

If you go with all those small fast guys on the field they will struggle against the run.

neither of those guys are small. it's about tackling. both are good tackling players. with a big guy they just throw it so whats the difference if they score on you with the pass or the run? you don't get extra points removed for one or the other. our safeties the last couple of years have been bad at tackling. we lost shamarko. we have mitchell, davis and golden. we easily could take on two safeties.

Obi isn't a good tackler, the Steelers still have Dangerfield on the roster I think. I don't see them drafting two safeties that high to acquire Jones and Obi, CB and OLB are more of a priority early in the draft.

I'm not sure why anyone would say that Obi is a bad tackler. He's actually a very good tackler for a college safety entering the draft. Most of them have far more significant tackling flaws than Obi does.

There are so many prospects in the 30-70 range, it should be interesting
to see if the Steelers do something out of their normal operating procedures?
About a month out now, Only time will tell.

I read that somewhere recently that said he was a bad tackler.

I wouldn't be opposed to moving say our 4th this year and 3rd next year to move back into the 3rd this year. There are enough picks in this draft to make this worthwhile.

In addition to film, I've seen him play in person a handful of times. For a safety he's a very reliable tackler. They all miss a tackle here and there, but I haven't seen him miss any more than I saw Karl Joseph miss when I watched his tape last year. My only concern with Obi is that it may take him a bit of time to adjust to an NFL passing game if they try to line him up in center field. Near the line of scrimmage he's pretty much a plug and play safety. That's my view anyway.

That's why we need to go to more DL ...The way the NFL is heading the 5-1-5 is the Defense of the future ...The single LB will be played by a SS type the sooner we start loading up on DB'S the better...

Indeed. Obi is a guy I would love for us to nab at 30 for sure if Watt, Mckinley or Lawson are out of the equation.

It depends on opponent personnel/tendencies, game situation, down/distance and offensive personnel groupings. Offenses are becoming more and more multiple, and defenses need to be as well. In a situation where we're facing a team that will run between the tackles, and the game situation and down/distance favor the run game, then you have a traditional 7 man DL/LB grouping. In situations where the pass is more of a concern but they're not going 3 and 4 wide, you may go big nickel with 3 safeties and pull a guy like Vince Williams off the field for a 3rd safety. You have better run defenders than going true nickel with 3 corners, but are still geared toward defending the pass plays that they can run from a 2 WR personnel grouping.
