Nice interview with Redman...All the info is there..One major point is we are banged up,,,he states he is still banged up...He explains why we have so many negative runs,he also explains why we didn't run more against the Raiders...

I firmly believe Redman has been playing hurt,I also believe he could have had a huge game against the Raiders if we had tried to show case him....Redman looked to be a lot closer to full strength,he was at 3.0 YPC with only 9 totes,,,If he had more his average would have went up IMO.....He is close to being healthy and our OL was a lot closer to getting a hat on a hat...I love when players break the game down in a back to the basics type way....Redman is a 5.0 YPC type of guy if guys just get him the LOS....No RB will do great avoiding guys in the backfield esp. Power based RB'S...

Redman needs this bye our OL needs this bye,our Defense really needs this bye..

We will have to run to beat the Wide 9 and we have tape that proves it,next time out I expect Red at full strength and a healthier OL and Redman will have a Big game...You heard it here first Redman will have a huge game vs. the Eagles even if Mendenhall is back.... Haley attacked a weak secondary as he should have ,,,next game we will attack a strong pass rush Team, expect the focus to be on the running game featuring a almost full strength Redman...

PWP, you've got a lot more confidence in Redman and our running game than I do. Maybe Redman is hurt, but so far he's been pretty disappointing. I don't see him as a 5 YPC kind of back but as more of a grinder who gets the tough yards between the tackles. I am now convinced he's not a feature back but can still be a valuable weapon.

    Thank you captain obvious!

Our running game has struggled because we haven't been blocking very well. We really need to do a better job.

Really? I don't think anyone in Steeler Nation noticed.

Maybe it's just me, but I'm pretty sure he mentioned something about being banged up.

The 4th. and 1 is all I need to see...The OL sealed the line and he gets 5...He leans for 3 yards almost every time if he gets to full speed,he also makes guys miss when he is at full speed...Behind a OL that gives him the LOS he has 3 yards for sure probably 5 and maybe even 7 plus....Exactly the same type of stats he put up last year in the post season and against the Jets the year before in the post season...

Watch those 2 games look at the clean LOS...Not that the OL was killing people,he simply had a clean LOS...Then compare that to our first 3 games this year,,,and you will see the clser to clean we get the higher his average will get......Simple math to me if Redman makes his first move at the LOS or he gets first contact at the LOS Redman wil be a 5.0 YPC back....

It is not to much to ask the OL to give a RB the LOS....IMO thats exactly what Haley is preaching..Just get a hat on a hat and let the RB take over from there....

I agree. If the defense doesn't turn it around it will be a long season. Ben and company put up 31 points against the struggling Raiders and they still lost because the defense was horrible. Also lets not forget what Tim Tebow did to this defense in the playoffs. I know that was last season but it doesn't look like much has changed since then. I think the offense will be fine and the running game will get better with healthier backs but I am not very confident in the defense right now.

Well, it was good to hear him say he was banged up. I suspected he was still nursing his injury, but haven't heard it confirmed anywhere. I had to chuckle when he mentioned dancing behind the LOS.

They've struggled to get the hat on the hat, so we'll see what the bye week can do I guess. I heard Colon say earlier that pulling and getting to the second level has been harder than he thought it would be, and unfortunately, that's not something that is going to improve without game experience.

Yeah that made me laughf as well....As far as the pulling goes and getting to the 2nd. level ,I have a feeling that Haley will fix that...No need to have concern with the 2nd. level when the 1st. level is in the Backfield....I believe we will see more Football 101 just win the LOS....After we get there then we can think about blocking for the Big play...

Not so much Captain obvious...You must look deeper young one...

Say a running play blocks all on the LOS and they have a great Double Team in the 2 Gap this could be a great play if their is no free men blitzing the 2 Gap..A Coach would say great blocking according to play design ,,but maybe next time instead of the Double Team you pick up the SS who caused that fumble in the backfield...I could give a lot more real cases ,but I hope you get my point..

The bottom line is sometimes the perfect design must be tweaked on the fly and to date we have Not been able to realize or capitilize on the fly...The bigger picture is why? This is where the feel for the game comes in,this is where players must sense the different looks and adapt during the play.....As Redman stated in simple terms get a Hat on a Hat,,,,that may mean you abondon your pull, that may mean you abandon your reach block, that may mean you abandon your double Team....The Coach can't prepare you for all that....This is the time when players must adapt and realize that above all else Football 101 is more Important than assignments....#1 rule for OL never let a guy come free across your face...We have violated that rule at least 30 times this year and Redman is calling the OL out on that in a way that is to be respected...

So why you say Captain Obvious,,,I say Leadership.....

    Featuring Mendenhall.

I just picked him up in a fantasy league.
(Why would another owner draft him, then dump him a week before he gets back? Couldn't pick him up fast enough.)

our o-linemen get beat off the snap. willie is slow and i don't think game time will ever help that. if we are going to line up and beat philly hat on hat, i'd assume adams started at LT and we move colon back to RT. put beachum, lee at LG and get some speed teamed up with pouncey. gilbert and foster can keep each other fresh at RG. it may not be the best in pass protection but adams is the better run blocker. colon was always a good run blocker outside. beachum or lee won't get beat off the snap and are mobile. foster and gilbert should be able to seal down inside. use will johnson, line it up in the I and run the ball. heath will help on either side. make the run succeed and the pass blocking will be easier with play action. flair rainey out of the backfield one way and will j the other and watch the defense part allowing heath down the seam. suck those safeties up in the box and our speed guys kill them. what is so hard about doing this stuff. we see it. they see it. it comes down to players and playing to their stregnths and not just the skill players. our line is not matched up with what we do.

    So after 3 weeks ......Ben throws 120 times...or 40 times a game......Steelers run 74 times or 24.66 times a game....Redman 32 times (10/game) for 2.3 a carry

Look at the highlighted thoughts.... :hmmm:

Yes the OL has under performed, but Redman is still not a feature back. I'm not sure if you really believe Redman is as great as you say or you're just trolling. Either way it's messed up!

So they are banged up, and only after 3 games, how do they expect to make a 13 game run if they can"t make it through 3 games healthy???

Well Dwyer is in the Dog House, and if Mendenhall is healthy he will take his hat....I think this will lead to more reps for Redman...I also never planned on Decastro going down or Adams not being the starting LT...I also never thought that Redman would be fighting a injury bug for so long...

So as I stated above I think this time will allow Haley to change the schemes more and it will allow Redman to get healthy...Redman is a great RB and if the OL can just tie at the los everyone will see it...I am glad that Mendenhall is back because now everyone will see it is not the fault of the RB'S...I hope the 2 weeks gives the Coach and the OL the time they need to develop a strong running game one that is different from the one he had installed with Adams and Decastro playing....

As I stated then Redman is best when he runs left his NFL,College, and High School stats support that, and now we have weak run blockers on that side and a guy at RG who can't pull...

This is why I am still so high on Redman and I will not back off the praise,,,,because if you put Redman behind a OL who can run block left and add in a OL that can pull left then Redman would Average over 5.0 YPC.....As of now we can't do either and Redman is at 75% at best.....So that would mean about 35% effectiveness,,,2.2 plus 2.2 plus 1.5 just over 5.5 a carry at full strength....

Enough with that and on to the why Redman will have a huge game vs. the wide 9...The Wide 9 helps a poor run blocking LT because he gets leverage from the set..The wide 9 helps the LG to make his block as well as he always has inside leverage as well...The Wide 9 helps the RG be able to pull as he has the same inside leverage and can get out into his pull clean with a simple jab punch and a swivel hip...This helps a slow OG the same as it will help Colon...The are between the B gaps exactly where Redman needs to start,,,as such Redman will have a big game there will be very little bounce outside runs even if Mendenhall is back...The Wide 9 is designed to be super strong on the edge in both phases of the game ,,it is weak in run protection right up the middle...So Redman will get that average up a bunch when all these things come together...

If we can't run up the middle we will have ver little chance to win this game,,,so even you Redman doubters need to say some prayers and hope the Wide 9 scheme is enough to help our OL get a Hat on a Hat,,,because it must be done or Ben will take a beating.....So there I hope that helps with the reason I still Pimp Redman as to not do so would mean I think we have no chance to win..

No way Redman sees more reps with Mendenhall back....and where did you see Dwyer is in the dog house? Mendenhall will see the 10 to 15 per game that Redman gets now (Mendenhall averages 15.9 for his career)....and the other 10 a game will be split between Batch, Rainey, Redman, and Dwyer. Depending on who is healthy enough to get a hat.....

I never planned on any of those things either...what I did plan on is the entire history of the NFL. No matter how much you love Redman...He is not Bettis....Bettis is a HOFer in waiting....and he never had more than 4.9 for his career in a year....Earl Campbell best ever season was 5.2...and he almost hit 2000 yards that year... Emmitt Smith hit 5.3 one time...and that was behind one of the greatest Olines in football.....Barry Sanders regularly hit the numbers you predicted for Redman...but two totally different runners.

I like Redman...but Bettis, Campbell, Smith, Sanders....he is not

I had no crystal ball either...but Redmans numbers are much closer to what I predicted.

Based on current numbers he would end the season with 170 carries...at his current 2.3 ypc.. 384 yards and 5 TD's....and even if you double that due to his "current" injuries....you are looking at 768 yards...and 10 TD's...which is darn close to what I felt he would do at best....

With Mendenhall back....I think Redman carries will go down...but his YPC will go up....I say he finishes between 500 and 600 yards rushing and I am still hoping for the 10 TD's

Ben meanwhile is right on pace for my prediction
Current projection for Ben....437 of 640 for 4821 yards and 42 TD's.....All would be new Steeler records....so if you back that off a little...you are right in my range again.

I need to play the lottery... :lolol:

Here is a very similar article from Steelers Depot....As I stated in this thread and in the pre season thread about the wide 9, to attack it you must run the ball up the middle....The article states the exact same thing....One huge point that all should notice is the 6.5 YPC the Eagles have gave up to the running game up the middle...

I hope so PWP otherwise we will have to contact Bettis and see if the bus has any tread left on the tires! I've never been so frustrated with our team but I'll die a Steeler fan and I watch no matter how painful the loss.

PWP, if Redman finishes the season with a 5.0 ypc average I will give you all the savings I have in the bank and all of my retirement to boot. I don't care what line is blocking in front of him he is not a 5.0 ypc running back. If he was he would have been a top 10 draft pick. What round was he drafted in, I don't remember? I admire your bromance with Redman but the claims you make about the guy are delusional. I think Mendy is a much more complete back and I don't expect him to have a 5.0 ypc average. I'd be happy with either of them being over 4. Please, don't get me wrong. I like Redman and I think he is good at what he does but what you say about the faults of the line and what they need to do to help would benefit any running back.

Careful Jim. He's only averaging 2-point something per carry, but he only has 30 something carries. One good game with one long run and he could be over 5 YPC. Then he could blow out a knee, wind up on IR, and his season is over -- above 5 yards per carry.

I agree, with the way our OL has been blocking, anything over 4 will be a success story. Hopefully the 2nd half of the season picks up when more chemistry is built, and DeCastro comes in (ironically destroying some of the chemistry, but still worth it).
