Put a lot of work into that, good job.

Without going through the whole thing, just want to comment on a few things that stuck out that I don't agree with.

Troy Niklas will be very helpull in the passing game, I think he is going to be big time.

I don't think Manziel should have been drafted in the first round at all. I see him getting busted up faster then RG did.

jimmy garoppolo could very likely be NE's next franchise QB, great pick up. Brady has a few years left at best, will be 39. If JG develops the way I think he will, don't think darth hoodie won't push Brady out, assuming Brady even wants to still play by that point.

    Great write-ups B&G

I agree, I don't like the Pats draft at all. So for everyone out there that thinks the Pats can do no wrong, here's your example. I have alot of friends that are Pats fans and they are crucifying this draft. Tom Brady only has a couple of good years left. What are the Pats doing to capitalize on that? I can't see Brady winning another SB. Look at Denver. They are trying to do anything and everything to win a SB while they have Manning.

I get the Pats are looking towards the future, but when you have a QB like Brady, you should be trying to win the SB now. How would Steeler fans have reacted had we taken a QB in Round 2?

    Bad draft for the Pats.

Wasn't great but how many immediate impact players are you going to get when picking that late. Looking at the picks in blackandgolds write up, none of the teams picking in that range blew me away. It's part of the reason why the Steelers are in transition, pick at the bottom long enough, talent on your team will thin out.

I don't think that is what this was about at all. I think they looked for guys, especially in the first 2, who could stay on the field for defending the run AND the pass. They played too much DIME last year and they knew it. Shazier should help alleviate that.

I agree with your grade...B+, but see 1 spot where I think that could have been fixed. Now onto the players:

Shazier...I LOVE this pick. He is a playmaker for sure and will help with defending the run and the pass.

Tuitt....Another pick I love. I love what he will look like by next year across from Heyward.

Archer....I hated this pick. If you make this an impact CB, this is an A draft. I can't imagine there wasn't 1 CB we didn't like at this point. He could be a huge impact player, but he isn't the first one I have thought that about. I honestly don't understand what it is they are looking for. I think you could argue this is the 4th guy we have looked at for this role, Stevens-Howling, Rainey, that guy from the Canadian league, and now Archer. It worries me that they are looking at it and have gotten tunnel vision about it.

Bryant...was a no-brainer pick. If he can put on some weight and get to work with A. Brown, I think he could be really good. People will argue, yeah, but he was 2nd fiddle to Watkins. So, last I looked we have Brown who is a pretty good receiver. Add Wheaton and Moore to this group and I like it.

Richardson...this is a very weak pick IMO. I don't think he is anything more than a role player in this D. Last year we walked away from a CB in the 5th round, didn't even put him on the PS, yet here we are again in the 5th round doing it again. I like Aikens and Desir more...both of them. They debated Bryant in round 3 and settled on Archer. In hindsight, I think they should have gone Bryant and then taken Desir who would have been there in the 4th. If you take Desir or Aiken first, then this pick I understand the risk of taking, but at the only CB...I don't like it.

Johnson....depth guy who could develop, but if you look at him as depth only, the pick is okay.

Zumwalt...I don't like taking 2 ILBs when you have an impact guy at 1, Timmons already in the fold, Spence maybe coming back, Williams who you say you liked, Garvin, and Wilson already on the roster. I would have preferred OLB, but if they can use Zumwalt on special teams and look to see if he can move to OLB by putting on 10 lbs, I could be okay with this pick.

McCullers....here is a guy I see as EXACTLY like N. Williams. Could be dominant, but is going to need teaching. He just doesn't understand how to use his size. I think they go...Heyward, McLendon, Thomas, Tuitt, Arnfelt, and Fangupo with N. Williams and McCullers on the practice squad. Those guys both need some teaching. Arnfelt and Fangupo fight over the last helmet on gameday.

Blanchflower...at this point it is almost impossible to evaluate him. His injuries create evaluation problems and when you couple that with QBs which sucked....hard to evaluate at the moment.

I don't get the Steelers drafting 2 ILB's they should've drafted 2 CB's instead, and taken one in the 3rd over Archer. If Zumwalt can play OLB that would be better, they seem to have enough depth at ILB already.

My only guess here is that the following exists:

Williams is only a 2 down player and is NOT a demon on special teams. He will probably be back, but only as positional depth, or he may not even make the team.

Garvin they see as too small to take normal reps at the position or they only see him as a situational player against the pass.

Wilson was behind both the guys above. Add in Zumwalt and Shazier and he is now maybe 6th or 7th on the depth chart, depending on Spence.

Spence, I don't think they believe that he will actually be back. They have done the "right thing" so far, but they just don't believe it is a strong possibility he comes back.

I sort of agree with this. My thoughts are:

Williams - He could grow and become a good player, but his ceiling may be around that of Larry Foote's. In a passing league, he'll probably never average more than half a season played every year.

Wilson and Garvin - Bodies. Helped us here and there, but NOT the future, and probably not even a decent role playing future like Williams.

Spence - I believe they believe in him, and I believe in him too. However, surely the team recognizes that relying on Spence after one of the most devastating injuries ever and two full years missed is a mistake. You can keep him and give him a fair shot, but you can't rely on him to succeed. I doubt even Spence would argue that.

Shazier - Better than any of them and will probably be better than Timmons in a year or two; too good to pass up.

Zumwalt - Value just too good to pass up, and despite the logjam of bodies at ILB, the fact is that the bodies at the bottom of that logjam could absolutely be cut and we wouldn't miss them. He's insurance for Spence, a great special teamer, and did you all forget we're the Steelers and must have linebacker talent top to bottom at all times for seamless transitions from legacy to legacy? We've had some gaps in our legacies lately. For those of you that forgot, this is how we did it for so long - drafting good LBs when it seemed like we didn't need any. Cornerbacks? Yeah, I wanted two CBs too, but we are talking about the 6th round here. Doubtful any of those guys would make or break us. We passed on impact CBs earlier in the draft. If you want to complain about that, look at the Shazier/Tuitt/Archer/Bryant picks. I totally want to complain about that, but I just can't argue with most of those picks.

Williams isn't going anywhere, he'll be on the team, I'l bet money on that. And Butler was just saying that Spence looks good, he's been medically cleared to play and is almost at the miraculous point, he said he is going to make it. Now if the knee holds up, thats a different story but Spence is in their plans.

if nothing else this season, i would like to see spence as a special teams ace. maybe even ST's captain. minimum. that would be awesome for him. if he can do more as the season goes that would be whipped topping and a cherry.

Good work B&G P. With fair (honest) grading like that, I'm guessing you're not auditioning for ESPN or NFL Network where everyone gets aa A or a B. To think, you dared to call out the brilliant Patriots. Blasphemer!

I agree that the Pats draft is very questionable. It makes no sense to draft the heir apparent high when Brady is still in his prime and insists that he'll be playing into his 40s. Of course, maybe Brady has privately told them otherwise. A questionable Pats draft is nothing new. Look back at the last several years and you'll see as many high pick failures as successes. Their current team is built as much (or more) on free agency as it is via the draft. That's only going to work as long as Brady is there and guys can head to NE for a chance to win.

    Good insightfull write-up.

Only thing I will add is Jeff Janis will be an absolute monster for Green Bay. I say in 2 years he may be their #1 receiver. Wish the Steelers would have drafted him.

I don't know if it's NE hate or what but how are you guys questioning drafting a QB when yours is 36 and will be 37 when the season starts? We better damn well do it when Ben turns 36 if not 35. Brady isn't playing into his 40's, I never heard him say that but don't care if he did.

Jimmy Garoppolo was a great pick up, lot to like about that kid. I'm actually pissed that they got him. Rest of their draft, meh but like I said, no one else knocked it out of the park in those late rounds.

I don't mind Garapollo. He was good at the East-West game and didn't look out of place at the Senior Bowl.

That being said, if Ben is 36 and still producing at a HIGH level (Like Brady is), then yes I would be upset if we used a 2nd round pick on a QB. If you have a QB that is playing like a Top 5 QB, I think if you have to ride that and gun for the SB every year, by giving him weapons, protecting him better, or by making the D around him better.

Now, obviously the pick up of Aaron Rodgers by the Packers in 2005 worked out, but consider they were coming off seasons of 12-4, 12-4, 10-6 & 10-6. Favre was still playing good ball. What happened in 2005 when they drafted Rodgers in the 1st round? 4-12. Had they taken a WR or RB in the 1st round, that nose dive may not have happened.

As I said, I know Rodgers worked out, so it looks like it was the correct move. But what happens if that had been JP Losman instead? The Packers would have continued to flounder.

My philosophy is, as long as you have a stud QB, ride him and give him all the help he can. When he starts to dip, maybe look at a QB, but preferably I have no problem trotting out a veteran journeyman while a rookie QB learns the ropes.

To me, it doesn't matter how good your QB is playing, when you reach that age, you better start preparing for life after him. If JG turns out to be the next franchise guy, its a brilliant pick, if he doesn't, so what, who was there that would put NE over the hump? The offense is already stellar, they seem to put up 30-40 points every game, taking an offensive guy there would make no difference, defense? Would be a better argument but again, picking at that spot, who was a game changer that they could have taken?

I think it was an incredibly smart pick.

Philosophical difference. NE may be in a bit of a different situation too since their division stinks and it isn't quite as tightly contested. Still, if Garoppolo doesn't pan out and the Pats continue to see playoff exits without SBs, there will be an uproar in New England.

Jarvis Landry went the very next pick. Keep an eye on that. Also, CJ Fiedorowicz went shortly after. I think those are two players that Patriots could have really used right now. Scott Crichton would have also been a smart pick.

I sort of split the difference between you two. Brady's playing well, but he's at an age where that might not last much longer. It's a good idea to plan for a smooth transition without a gap in between. A rookie contract is 4 years, and it's likely he'll be done by then, so the timing isn't horrible.

That said, a 2nd round pick is high, and if you're a Super Bowl contender with an aging franchise QB, you should be trying to win a Super Bowl now. To me it's about value. Taking a QB in the 2nd is undoubtedly sacrificing the present for the future. So it better be worth the sacrifice. Is Garapollo soooo good that you just couldn't pass on him, because you won't get another shot at value like this? That's the question that needs answered to me. I don't think we have reason to believe there won't be more like him every draft in the next couple of years. So if I was a Pats fan, I'd dislike the pick. But I'm not, so I like it.

I guess it all depends on how much you value JG, I think he is going to be a big time player, him and Bortels were the best QB's in the draft IMO.

It's in the spirit of the thread, grumpy ;)

I also really liked the Jags draft, think they improved their team a lot, Bortles, Robinson and Lee are a huge upgrade, Storm is great value in the 7th, all great picks.

Also like KC, GB and Chicagos draft.

their qb evaluation might be as bad as our guys evaluating cb talent! in all honestly though they are probably just drafting these guys to tack on more future picks (trade bait) they came claoe to sending mallet to houston.

Watch the Jags GM, he maybe the best in the business, learned alot from Bill Poulian.
I believe they are an up and coming team.
