You're right - not so much underrated or underappreciated while he was playing, more of how difficult it was/has been to replace his dominance in the run D since. He was the Rock of Gibraltar and thwarted so many blocking schemes. Yes the game has changed a lot since then but the Steelers have been gashed so much it seems by the run in more recent times.

Randy Grossman, 6'1 218 pound TE...4SB's. Nothing special to see, but was there, and often when you needed him.

IMO Neil was Steelers 3rd best QB. Others may say Kordell.

The OP asked underrated, I don't think of him as underrated for the Steelers.

NOD was better than Korkie as a passer but not by much. He was very clutch there for the last two seasons which is why it was so fricking disappointingly frustrating when he threw those two horrible picks in the SB. I wouldn’t call either of them underrated. Between the two of them they both missed big opportunities of forever being remembered by average NFL fans. Korkie cause he wanted to be slash and Odummy for well……….I just won’t go there.

Kordell was a wide receiver or something but he wasn’t a quarterback

I don’t like NOD and it has nothing to do with the Super Bowl loss he just did not have a winner mentality

    And I’m grumpy

    But Bradshaw 1

And Ben a distant 2 are clear

Otherwise Bobby Layne and Tommy Maddox

I’m going to throw a name into the hat for underrated player that many will not know and many will have forgotten

    Brian Hinkle LB

He was a 6th round draft pick in 1981

None the less he played 12 years for the Steelers

One thing I remember is he would not wear a new jersey in camp purely out of superstition

By the end of his career his camp jersey was a worn torn thread bare rag

    :smiley1:

I think its JT Thomas and Mike Wagner. Watch the super bowls in the 70's . those 2 were clutch and never seemed to get the recognition they deserved.

He almost won DPOY of the year, and was only edged out by Ed Reed that year

An erratic passer with poor pocket presence is an erratic passer with poor pocket presence in any era. He would have been better because his skills fit the modern game, but his problems weren't all due to coaches who weren't used to utilizing a skill set like his.

Great Wr and a great punt returner, truly a double threat, something you don't see very often these days. If only we drafted Marino, Lipps and Stallworth, who still had some juice left in Lipps first few years as a pro, could've delivered a Superbowl to us.

JMO, but Carnell Lake, W. Gay, I. Taylor , and JT. Thomas are all underrated.
Hell I actually think. M. Blount is underrated by today's fans.
