I thought jones and jpw were pretty much the same and their stats showed that. I didn't think either was terrible for their first game here as 3rd stringers.

I'm still on the fence as to what I think they should do with Cotchery. I just don't understand why Ben doesn't target Cotchery more and I wonder if Ben would target one of the younger recievers more than he does Cotchery.

Based on just one game, I would hate to see either J.Brown or JD Woods have to end up on the practice squad, where someone (likely with the initials of BA) would pick them up.

I agree. Depth is a major concern. There are some positions I don't worry about, but others....WOW are we bad at those positions.

I was truly hoping that one of our young guys would push Gay out of the way during preseason, and I guess they still could during the year, but I also don't blame the blown coverage on him. It was the safeties fault.

I like them both as well. Woods also showed some signs that I liked. While I like Cotchery and doubt they go without a vet at the position, I would love to see A. Brown, Sanders, Wheaton, J. Brown, and Woods (who I think at the moment at least makes the PS) all on the team. The fact that Woods can go PS works in our favor.

I agree we were FLAT, but it was preseason, not regular season. We didn't play with all of our guys, had mistakes made by vets who we know we can count on come the season, and yet were still in the game on our last possession.

I just can't watch Ramon Foster and William Gay play. Apart from those, they looked OK. Ike didn't look particularly good either.

I was thinking that as well, but I think the fact that we can stick one or two of these guys on the PS saves Cotchery's spot on the roster. With Plax out, I think the FO will want a veteran presence.

So John Parker Wilson in his 5th Pro Preseason Camp is equal with a guy who is a rookie and we are going to cut the Draft pick? Wrong. If Jones is anywhere close to a draw, he wins the job.

where did I ever say cut jones? i'm one of his biggest backers here. I think we got him at a good spot in the draft. I think they like him in the dink and dunk style we are playing and that's what he would do right now if he ever had to play. they won't play any of the backups like they will ben.

    I think this is JPW's 4th camp.

Anyone else like what they saw out of our second year tight end Paulson. I love his build yet he needs to get that NFL weight on. His routes are crips and has nice hands.
Blocking, as we all know is his down side. He got pushed around a bit one on one but had a nice seal and decent double teams.

Personally I have the same view and nothing changed. I think we saw some nice plays from some youth that I didn't expect: Paulson, woods, ta amu, and the entire ILB core.

I am very excited about this year.

Even though we lost, I will go with somewhere between the same and more optimistic.

First, let's only look at the first 10 minutes where the starters played. Take away the pass to Cruz and I believe the Steelers outplayed the Giants. Extend that to 60 minutes and we may have won the game.
    Offense:
QB - Ben is healthy, with more reps between now and game 1 will improve his confidence in this offense. Grad is a much better option than we had last year.
RB - I liked LSH, a healthy Bell is reason for optimism, Redman is in great shape.
FB - Will Johnson showing soft hands in the passing game, will we use him as a lead blocker to help the run game?
WR - AB will do well. Sanders will do well. Wheaton looks promising, rare combination of speed and soft hands. Brown looks promising as well.
TE - Paulson looking good, optimistic Heath will play most of the season.
Oline - DeCastro continuing to improve, Zone blocking scheme gives us optimism, Beachum becoming a solid third option at tackle.

    Defense:
DL- Steve McClendon will be better than last year. Hood, Keisel, and Heyward are healthy.
OLB - Woodley in better shape, good competition between Worilds and Jones.
ILB - Timmons may well be the Defense MVP
CB - Taylor will nail down the opponents best.
S - Clark and Troy both healthy

Building for the future - I'll take Jones over Leftwich any day. Give him time. Do I expect him to succeed Ben in a few years? At this point, who cares. His job is to learn and adapt and be ready. Being the 3rd string, he will have time to do both. Ta'amu or Fangupo, I like the competition, whomever wins will see backup reps, the other will likely be moved to PS. Shamarko is a rookie, but I have nothing but optimism for him.

As far as concerns, obviously Gay and Foster. Depth at Oline beyond Beachum. Depth at CB.

Therefore, at this point, I am far more optimistic than pessimistic. Is it just homer goggles? Maybe, but to that I'll just say... Here we go, Steelers! Here we go!

:this!: Neither played very well. One went un-drafted and the other is our 4th round pick. You do the math on who goes.

Man sometimes this internet forum thing can be confusing. I actually was trying to agree with you assessment. I have seen things on this page since the game advocating keeping one over the other.

When it comes to which camp..

    2009 Atlanta
    2010 Atlanta
    2011 Atlanta
    2012 Jacksonville
    2013 Pittsburgh

This would be his 5th training camp.

well I was totally wrong tarheel. I stand corrected on both counts if you agreed with my assessment. I thought this was his 4th.

never the less they see something in each of them, but the youth movement would be my way to go if they are equal. I hope we never have to find out how well he or grad would play. LOL

No big deal man. I obviously didn't communicate what I was trying to say in the first post. It happens and looking back I can totally see why you thought I was attacking your position. I didn't mean it that way.

Hard to believe looking at him that he is in his 5th camp as he sure doesn't look like a "seasoned" vet. He should have established himself as a backup by this point, but my guess is this is his last shot to make a roster.

I hope we see a big dose of our starters all year long. Not just QB, but everywhere.

one thing about JPW if we do cut him, is I doubt he goes anywhere else and God forbid we would have to call him this year, but he would be familiar with us. kind of a PS without the pay.

landry jones didn't throw for 17,000 yards by accident. he'll be fine. NFL QB is not an easy job to learn.

coch will be what he was last year number 4 or 5 depending on situation. The current WR depth chart is only because there are to many rookies.

If I have one concern about this season it's this kind of agreeance with TSF message board members.

    These actions worry me....

    Hey Hack

I'm not saying this because he's a fourth rounder, although it's on the bubble regarding "value expected" for that position in the draft. Meaning JPW is expected to show a few years of experience, whereas they may be willing to keep Landry as the #3 if he shows some ability to improve in camp. Not sure he has to actually outright beat JPW to earn a year on the squad.

But, if he continually shows significant weaknesses or an inability to improve, I would cut for JPW. I'm sure the Steelers will do the same. He's got to make it close.

Just from a curiosity perspective, how do you see him as "being easily outplayed by JPW" and do you think the coaches agree with you?
