Steelers' Moncrief will play through finger injury

    Jeremy Fowler
    ESPN Staff Writer

PITTSBURGH -- Coming off what he calls "my worst game ever," Pittsburgh Steelers receiver Donte Moncrief will continue to play through a dislocated finger suffered in training camp.

The Steelers need a legitimate No. 2 receiver opposite JuJu Smith-Schuster, and Moncrief didn't deliver during Sunday's 33-3 loss at New England with multiple drops and three catches for 7 yards despite a team-high 10 targets.

"[Ben Roethlisberger's] depending on me and I've got to make plays for him, hurt finger or not," Moncrief said. "There's nothing you can do to a dislocated finger, especially when you're a receiver. You've just got to tough out the pain and go."

So did the team know his finger was jacked and they kept throwing him the ball? Or was he pressing trying to impress the team like he stated in that article?

Or does he too also have a mental block on how to play football when playing against the patriots? Did that start prior to becoming a Steeler or after?

I hope that finger doesn’t turn him into Sammie Coates mark 2.

I commend him for steeping up and admitting this. Now almost every other starter should be doing the same. That was as close to unwatchable as it gets.

I will give him another chance, but he is on a short leash. Get to the jugs gun my friend.

10 targets to a guy with a dislocated finger. It’s not like fingers are important to a WR, right?

SIT him. It’s not like sitting a star player that you can’t win without.

I don't commend him because the mention of the finger made it sound more like he was making an excuse. Washington needs to be getting more reps as the No. 2 with Moncrief hurt.

Funny that we didn’t hear about the injury until after he had that bad game.

Moncrief's fingers aside, his performance and some of the observations in the Switzer thread makes me think that Fichtner is still working out where to put his corps and when. It's the old Kevin Butler problem of using plays that suit the strength of your players, but in Fichtner's case he's still feeling his way with JW and DJ.

Just because Moncrief is the "no 2" on the depth chart, doesn't mean he has to be out as the second receiver on every play. On a 4th and 1, for example, I'd put receivers on the field that had actually caught a ball in the game. Because I don't believe there's that much of a difference between Moncrief, Johnson and Washington, other than experience, we can rotate these guys much more.

Actually we did. I recall it being reported as limiting his participation in preseason and practices during the preseason.

After the first drop he should have been benched.
You know because “he came to the job site without all his tools in the toolbox”.
    Hahahahahahaha!

Johnson needs to catch the ball too. McDonald needs to catch the ball. Moncrief needs to catch the ball. Would have made a huge difference in that game and keeping the defense off the field. I'm not putting much on fichtner because these balls were right in the hands to be caught. It would have made a difference in us moving the ball and resting the defense.

I said we needed a deep threat instead of drafting the same receivers over and over but nope. Moncrief showed me nothing all camp and preseason. So I'm not sure how his finger didn't heal. I have little to no hope in him bouncing back.

Funny stuff when Pittsburgh Dad thought he did a good job on defense batting the ball down:)

Running the ball can do that too. Not reach around hand offs 5 yards behind the LOS, line up under center and pound it. They tried it once, on the first play of the game, and it was a toss 5 yards behind the LOS.

Well the good thing about all this is he didn’t get called out and subsequently benched for his poor play.(not yet I think) I would of thought dropping that many passes deserved at least something. Whew!!

JW would of been hung up by his Buster Browns....( I was watching Jaws last night ;))
