    My 7 round mock draft.

3 components are used to create this mock:

    1. Realism. All players selected are assumed to be available at that pick without huge stretches of disbelief. Saquon Barkley will not be available at 28, for example.

    2. My preferences. All selections are players I like and think will contribute positively to the Steeler legacy.

    3. What the Steelers will actually do. All players selected fit (what I think) the current Steeler regime looks for in draft talent. This also includes moves. (Virtually no chance of trading out of the first or trading up 20 spots for a player)

I try to weigh all three elements evenly in this projection.
    Now, let us begin.

    Round 1.
Lorenzo Carter, OLB University of Georgia.
    6' 4 5/8", 250 lbs, 34" arms, 10 3/8' hands, 82" wingspan.
    4.50 40, 10' 10" broad jump, 36" vertical jump.

Exceptional athlete, great pedigree, versatile player. 4 time state champion in high school (2× Basketball, 2×Football), SEC champion, Charley Trippi award winner (most versatile player), 4 year starter.
I make this selection with the intention of moving him inside to take over Shazier's spot. He played all four LB posistions at UGA and is comfortable setting the edge, dropping into coverage, and rushing the passer. Watching his film he actually plays the position very similar to the way our current linebackers play it.
These are the types of players the Steelers have been drafting lately for the front 7: Great athletes that can play anywhere in the box on any down. He will provide more staunchness against the run as he consistently holds his spot at the point of attack.
Can instantly contribute on special teams while learning under Bostic, Williams, and Shazier.

    Round 2.
Terell Edmunds, SS, Virginia Tech University
    6' 1/2", 217 lbs, 32 3/4" arms, 10 1/2" hands.
    4.47 40, 11' 2" broad jump, 41 1/2" vertical jump.
True box safety, great athlete, pedigree.
With a father (and soon to be brother) as an NFL player, he knows the kind of work necessary to succeed at the next level.
As a box safety this means moving Sean Davis permanently to Free Safety, a position I believe he was always more suited to.
Edmunds looks to make his presence felt in the running game (no business decisions) and is very good at defending the short to intermediate passing game. Reliable, wrap-up tackler. Great build. Man coverage is not his strong suit but a year of playing and learning under Burnett should help him develop. Will instantly contribute on special teams.

    Round 3.
Keke Coutee, WR, Texas Tech University
    5' 9 3/4", 181 lbs.
    4.43 40, 34 1/2" vertical jump, 9' 5" broad jump, 6.93 3-cone, 4.15 20 yard shuttle, bench press 14 reps.
Quick and fast, good route runner, reliable hands.
With Eli Rogers' future uncertain, there is a sub-6-foot sized hole in the recieving corps. Keke is a faster Antonio Brown coming out of college. Tons of production from a program with a history of putting out good slot recievers. Kick return ability. Played with an improvisational QB in college (Mahomes). Suprisingly effective downfield blocker. Bringing this speed from the slot can either take the top off of defenses and let AB do damage underneath 1 on 1 or let opposing teams put their slot corner 1 on 1 against a legit burner.

    Round 5 A.
Josh Adams, RB, University of Notre Dame
    6' 2", 213 lbs, 33 3/4" arms, 9 1/4" hands.
    4.48 40 (Pro Day), 10' 2" broad jump, 6.75 3-cone (Pro Day), 11.31 60 yard shuttle (Pro Day), bench press 18 reps.
    Size, patience, and speed.
All reports make a point of mentioning his humble, team-first attitude.
Le'Veon is all but gone after this season and rebuilding the backfield will be a proactive endeavor.
Fantastic frame and muscularity. Takes time to build up speed but looks like Eric Dickerson when he hits his stride. 1-cut downhill runner. Workhorse back with the toughness to push the pile and fall forward when tackled. Reliable reciever (41 receptions in 2017). Average lateral agility, but can still make people miss.
    Josh_Adams_agility.gif
Above average pass protector. Good downfield blocker.
Slight injury concerns. Played with a brace in every game I watched and will probably need surgery for one of his feet.
Good value for a former Heisman candidate.

    Round 5 B.
Wyatt Teller, G, Virginia Tech University.
    6' 4", 301 lbs, 33 9/10" (approx) arms, 10 1/10" (approx) hands.
    5.24 40, 29" vertical jump, 10' 2" broad jump, 7.45 3-cone, 4.84 20 yard shuttle, bench press 30 reps.
Experienced, prototype size, and potential to start.
Ramon Foster is a free agent next year. Even if he is resigned and Finney remains the back up, the loss of Hubbard commands more bodies in the o-line room.
Converted defensive tackle who understands both sides of the line. Mauler in the run game. Anchor-class strength at the point of attack. Particularly adept at reaching the second level and wreaks havok there. Near perfect technique on combo blocks. Stones defenders when pulling. Better with the run than the pass. Needs better hand placement. Tends to meet blockers with his chest and hands at the same time instead of punching first. Feet are a touch slow side to side. Plods his way to the outside on toss plays.
The clay is there. If anyone can mold it, Munchack can.

    Round 7 A.
    Best front 7 player available.
Stopping the run was the #1 issue last season. The roster is somewhat crowded in these units but improvements must happen.

    Round 7 B.
    Best player available.
Like the previous round I will not bother guessing which particular players will be available this late. Do whatever is necessary to improve. Giving up big passing plays and 3rd down defense were the #2 and #3 problems with the team last season, repectively. Target them.

    Feedback is appreciated.

I dunno, I'm not sold on Lo Carter I'm the 1st. Like the combine workout but his scarce production is a bit worrying.

I know it is a need especially given Duprees future but I'm just not sure if we can take another swing at OLB in Round 1.

    Love Edmunds in Round 2.

I don't mind WR in round 3 but I probably have different names.

Rounds 5-7 I like the positions, I've got some different names.

    Priority Free Agent.
Austin Allen, QB, University of Arkansas.
    6' 3/8", 210 lbs, 30 5/8" arms, 9 5/8".
    4.81 40, 29.5" vertical jump, 10' broad jump, 7.18 3-cone, 4.48 20 yard shuttle.
    Experienced, technically siound, pro-style offense.
Dobbs was just drafted last year but he is untested. Landry is the cemented back up but he has never shown franchise QB potential. Allen would be a solid option to stash on the practice squad for a year or two and see what can be made of him.
I first noticed Allen last year when I was watching tape on Jeremy Sprinkle. He is an accurate thrower who places passes with anticipation. Has no problems pushing the ball down the field. Commanded a pro style offence. He is no stranger to being under center, I-formations, and 3 step drops. Underrated athlete (faster than Darnold or Mayfield).
He regressed in 2017. He lost his two best recievers, had a shoulder injury, and ARK had arguably the worst o line in the sec west.

I do like 1 and 2. 5a. I don't care for. The U abused him and he showed me the talent is very average. I think there are better RBs in this one. Coutee I'm Luke warm on. I don't think he's a bad player but some others I like better.

If Lorenzo Carter is the ultimate contingency plan by that time, the board was not considerate of the Steelers at all; nevermind compassionate.

That board, for the Steelers, would be flat out ugly. However, I would not be upset with it. Disappointed? Yes. Enraged? No. Lorenzo does have a very intriguing skill set that one can work on.

Terrell Edmunds being our second pick is something that I touched base on in another thread. Of the five safeties the Steelers have analyzed in the first two rounds, oddly enough, Terrell Edmunds arguably has the best and most quick chance to start among all of them. He has experience as both a Free and Strong Safety as well as being a linebacker. Given the fact that dime defenders need to be multi-role players anyways, Terrell's experience and athleticism will fit hand and glove in Keith Butler's system.

Outside of, Wyatt Teller, no one else I can agree with sans those two seventh round options due to the fact that we did not have Keke in for a pre draft visit or attend nor attended the Texas Tech or Notre Dame Pro Day.

If we draft Lorenzo Carter, I think I will split nails. He is everything that is wrong with Jarvis Jones and Bud Dupree. Freak athlete. Average football player. He can make crazy splash plays, but go watch all of his sacks while at GA. I don't think he has one clean win. He gets clean blitz looks. He gets sacks from other players forcing the QBs into him. He gets NO pressure on his own. It just doesn't show on his tape.

Agree. From everything I've seen and read he is a project. Does he have the measurables,yes....but you have to wonder where the production is then....can we maybe move him around a little as is and he could make some plays...maybe. I just don't have the faith in our staff to utilize him in that way. We are more structured than that. As desperate as we were at ILB last year I still feel moving Watt around and using Harrison(rotting on the bench) would of been better than the Moats and Spence disaster...
If we are looking for a third down pass rush specialist I think K Adams can fill that role.
Would I take Carter in the 2nd....probably....but he doesn't really have a position in this stage of his development. OLB? ILB? A little of both but not enough of one. Gonna need some seasoning....

Edit: like you mentioned about Dupree.....he has all that athleticism and we couldn't figure out a way to get him in favorable matchups...why would us fans feel Carter would be used any differently...like I said....I think our D is more structured and it's probably not gonna change any time soon for one player. 2nd round ,ok maybe...1st round ,no.

I see him used differently than the typical steeler OLB. That's where he could make a living in our defense. He closes quickly and has that length. He's not going to wow at the DE/OLB typical spot. Move him around and bring him from different spots and I think he would be very disruptive for an offense. Short area coverage would also be his role. From the inside. Not going to be a typical 3-4 OLB but a piece of the hybrid puzzle. That's how I see him anyway.

Look if we want to take Carter and move him to ILB then great but if we expect pressure from the edge from him, don’t count on it.

Freak but average football player could apply to Bud but not Jarvis. The words "Jarvis Jones" and "freak athlete" do not belong in the same paragraph together. The man ran a 4.9 40 at his pro day, 7.46 3-cone, and a 4.71 20 yard shuttle, 30 inch vertical. Only 20 bench reps. These are nowhere near the measurables of a freak (at least in a good way). When he was drafted the commentators even mentioned he fell so far because he was so sub-standard athletically, but praised the Steelers for taking him because he can play actual football. It is odd you call him an average football player when he was far above that in college. He was a 2 time all-american and set the sec record for sacks in a season. All that production and he still sucked.
If anything the draft teaches me that stats always come with context and that being the man in college has little bearing on how you will shake out in the NFL.
After all, a QB that never started a single game in college (Matt Cassel) has had a longer NFL career than 4 heisman trophy QBs that were in the league at the same time as him.

In regards to Carter, I think he has more potential inside than outside. He is a better run stopper than pass rusher. For comparison's sake, he is a far more polished LB than Tremaine Edmunds (a bit more athletic too) yet Tremaine will go in top 15 on potential alone whereas people seem to believe taking Carter at even #60 would be a risk.

according to the stats maybe but you watch the tape and he was average at best for his position, even in college. I honestly could not understand the hype that draft year, the tape was so obvious.

But back to your OP, I like your 3 component criteria. But I find it very hard to imagine them going OLB in rnd 1 again. Maybe he has some ILB potential but I don't think he fits the mold the Steelers are looking for on the inside. On the outside you have Watt and an excellent backup in Chickillo. Dupree has underwhelmed but in no way do I see them investing the draft capitol while he is still on the roster. I would be hard pressed to say they even draft an OLB this year. UDFAs yes, but not draft unless there's a steal in the 5th or beyond.

Sorry man, not a fan of the SS pick in rnd 2 either. The player is fine, just don't think we need another SS type or in the box guy. We have that in Davis and Burnett who GB even used as a LBer at times. Will Davis move to FS, even Haden didn't know in his interview this week. Let alone using a 2nd on a guy who will back up Burnett (if Davis does move to FS) doesn't make sense to me. We need a single high free safety type imo.

Why do you think Edmund's couldn't play that type of safety? He played both safety spots and corner in college. He ran a 4.47 which makes him the second fastest safety we would have. Faster than sutton and Allen too.

Carter I look at as not an edge rusher but as a Lawrence timmons transformation. I'm not sure of what tape you are speaking of on this kid but I see speed to the ball. Speed off of blocks. Most of his film has a TE brought to his side to help out blocking. I think the kid CAN make the transition and do some other creative things to help this defense. I wouldn't be at all disappointed if he was the pick.

the "tape" comment was on Jarvis Jones not Carter, but I don't think the Steelers see Carter as an ILB.

As to Edmunds, all of his problems are in open space. Not the candidate you want as a FS. He does have the speed, but what is he going to do when he gets there? Another Mithchell/Shazier head duck and miss? Great athlete but I don't see the security blanket I would want. Just my preference.
