Because a coach wins a super bowl doesn't guarantee them job security, ask shanahan, billick or gruden how long of a leash they get, I say tomlin has the rest of his contract to turn this team around, and then he needs to go if he doesn't get it done, so far he isn't getting it done: Why he is even a media darling is an enigma to me, giant fans wanted tom coughlin fired 2 years after he won a super bowl, he pulled off a miracle with a 9-7 team and won another SB or he could have been fired; No body cares what they did in the past, when fans see their coach failing to improve their team they have a short leash, tomlin talks a good game but until he delivers one he is on borrowed time as I see it.....

Yes. People forget this. Noll drafted most of those players, certainly most of the impact players.

Unfortunately for those coaches, none of them worked for the Rooneys. Tomlins seat isn't even warm let alone hot, does it need to keep being repeated that Cowher had 3 consecutive non playoff seasons? I guarantee you that the Rooneys do not view Tomlin as you do. And since when have the fans ever dictated what the Rooneys do with a HC? Thankfully the fans opinion doesn't mean squat in that regard or Cowher and Noll both would have been fired.

Just another cliche. He talks a good game but lets see if he can right this ship because if the first game is any indication on how we do this year we are in SERIOUS trouble. He has some things to fix right now its like trying to put out so many small fires at once lol

Some thoughts based on the posts here:

    1. Tomlin came into a vastly different situation than Noll and Cowher, and it is difficult to compare them. Noll came in and had nothing and built a winner though the draft. Cowher came in with underachieving pieces and made them winners and then managed to continue winning in a non-cap free agency era. Tomlin came in with 19 of his 22 starters having Super Bowl rings. So when we talk about "what Tomlin did," we have to ask ourselves what, exactly, he did. Made winners out of winners?

    2. About Tomlin's two Super Bowl appearances: 2008, Brady was out of the league, and the Steelers caught two other enormous breaks: 1. Baltimore knocked off Tennessee (who pounded the Steelers a few weeks earlier), allowing for a very favorable home AFCCG; and 2. every NFC contender went down and the mediocre Cardinals marched into Tampa--and nearly beat the Steelers. 2010: Again, the Steelers got a very favorable AFCCG, thanks to the Jets' miracle upset of the Patriots. Of all of those post-season games the Steelers played, only one was particularly impressive, and it was actually HALF of one: the AFCCG vs the Jets. (The 2008 win over San Diego was big, too.) Bottom line is, Tomlin lived a very charmed post-season life in 08 and 10, with a number of veterans who knew how to win. I am not trying to diminish these accomplishments; just trying to keep it real.

    3. I will have to research it, but I have not seen the Steelers have more poor performances, against weak underdogs, like they have in Tomlin's 6+ seasons. Nobody knows how to make bad and mediocre teams look competitive like Tomlin's Steelers.

    4. The 80s weren't THAT bad. Four playoff appearance and one AFCCG. 2-4 record. No, not GREAT, but not horrible, either. And Noll had some terrific drafts in the latter part of the decade.

    5. Perhaps Noll's greatest coaching job happened in 1989, for reasons that don't need to be explained. (Do they?)

Do you think Noll would have led them back to the SB? I think so, but real hard to say because who knows what pieces he would have continued drafting but he started getting the right pieces in place before he left, no reason to think he wouldn't have continued doing so. It's not like he didn't have an eye for talent, the 80's teams actually weren't bad, just missing the most important ingredient, QB.

Good question. I don't think so, only because the fire in Noll was gone, and he recognized this. Plus, he had hired the wrong OC in Joe Walton 1990. Cowher made two key moves coaching-wise: Capers and Erhardt. Not sure Noll makes similar moves. Then, personnel-wise: Would Noll have stuck with O'Donnell or go back to Brister? And would he have given Barry Foster a shot at RB?

After retiring, Noll was a fixture at TRS, in the corprorate box, and I remember TV shots of him smiling after Steeler TDs. He took great delight in seeing Cowher lead the team in '92. It was as if he knew he had a good team but also knew someone else needed to lead them.

Noll was kinda fired wasn't he? Or kinda forced out? Seems I remember a story around the time.

I don't recall that and even if he was, not exactly the same as those other coaches being fired from their teams, Noll was here for like 20 years.

noll stayed on in the front office in some capacity for awhile after his retiring.

to BF's thoughts about the rooney's and diamonds thoughts: that may have been true when more of the rooney's ran the team, or even Dan, but i'm not quite sure we are going to continually see such restraint from art ll. he scouted and was part of this front office through those noll years and cowher years. he's no dummy when it comes to the steelers. he does things his way and I can see some difference in him and the old guard of brothers.

just because it happened over so many years doesn't mean he won't make some changes that he see's fit. I don't think they will be drastic, but he seems much less tolerant as the head.

Oh I know, and to answer your question, he retired on his own. http://community.seattletimes.nwsource.com/archive/?date=19911226&slug=1325040

Thats true about Art, Mac but Dan is back from Ireland now as chairman, so I'm sure he has quite a bit of sway still and he is Arts daddy after all :lolol:

I actually did read an article about how it was good timing for the Steelers that Dan was back (and that his voice still carries weight) he cited the things you mentioned about Art but as a negative, he thought he was wrong about interfering with BA and the hiring of Haley, and several other examples that I'm not remembering now. Hopefully Dan will be a calming voice.

Sounds familiar <cough> Haley <cough> :innocent:

There's an excellent point in there about thinking too much as opposed to reacting and I think that is actually a problem for the defensive side too, I think that is part of the reason for the lack of turnovers. Other then that, I think the defense does a great job, so I hope no one takes this as bashing the defensive side of the ball type remark.

Nice. I am glad someone else is not towing the party line. I couldn't agree more than with point 3. I concur completely. Last year was emblematic of this disturbing trend of crappy play against the dregs of the league. If anything, this has been the hallmark of Tomlin's tenure in Pittsburgh. His teams constantly underachieve against teams that should not give them much trouble. Fast forward to week 1 and the trend continues.
