These were the words of Herman Edwards this morning on Mike&Mike. Stephen A. Smith echoed a similar sentiment on Monday, saying, "I trust in Mike Tomlin."

My question is this: What evidence is there that Mike Tomlin can be trusted to fix this? Because I don't see any such evidence in his 6+ years of coaching that he can right a sinking ship. He's had several such ships (second halves of 2007, 2009, 2011, and 2012) and not once did he find a way to correct things, despite promises to unleash hell (in 2009, I believe).

Anyone else wondering how/why anyone would think Tomlin can "fix things"?

Please, Herm just saying that because all the media types like Tomlin. Tomlin has never been a great coach. I think its time for new management.

They were 12-4 in 2011 then lost to Denver. In the second half they were 6-2.

Last year, BR was still too hurt to finish the year. 6-3 to start, starting QB injured, backup hurt scoring a touchdown, third stringer just too old. How do you coach out of that?

Exactly, the only way to weather injuries is to have the personnel to replace them with. Most teams don't survive losing their starting QB.

As for why media types have faith in Tomlin, because they aren't emotional fans and understand how impressive it is getting to 2 SB's and winning one of them.

I hear that alot from Cowherd about Tomlin. I really dont like Colin Cowherd but he seems to know what he is talking about and he always includes Tomlin in his group of elite coaches. Always. He is clearly seeing something I am not. Perhaps, Blast is right. Cowherd doesnt give a rats ass about the Steelers where I am, obviously, much more emotionally invested.

I remember how the team played through that 6-2 stretch, not the record itself. And I remember Tomlin's bone-headed decision to start Roethlisberger on a Monday night in San Francisco, when he was clearly too injured to play. And then he went with Charlie the following week against St. Louis. The team, played uninspired football against KC, coming out of the bye. They look unispired against Cleveland, the game in which Ben got hurt.

Make no mistake, here: that 2011 team was going down. And it showed when they got beat in Denver.

Because framing any success the team has as always down to things other than Tomlin, and any failures as always down to Tomlin, is a mass over-simplifcation.

Presumably, Herm Edwards doesn't see things like that.

I really respect what Herm Edwards has to say, he was after all a really great coach. Maybe we could replace Tomlin with him right now, I'm sure he'll do better.

Forgive me if you're joking because you didn't use the sarcasm font. Edwards as a head coach went 54-74 regular reason and 2-4 in the playoffs. What part of that says 'really great coach'? This is from Wiki on Herm Edwards:

"In 2005, a year marred by injuries, inconsistent play, lack of player development, and rumors swirling about Edwards possibly leaving the organization, Edwards led the Jets to a woeful 4-12 record'

Who does sound like to you? We've already got that in Tomlin.

Evidence? How about two SuperBowl appearances and two playoff appearances in six years? What does this guy have to do to get some respect?

    Tomlin's record is 63-34 W-L, 5-3 W-L in playoffs, 1 SB won. Edwards can't carry Tomlin's clipboard.

Well the Denver game was truly a wash. How many starters got injured before or during that game. It was truly a lost cause. I know it's an excuse but it is the truth. That said I hear the right things from Tomlin and I like the fact that he takes quick actions such as benching a player who can't hold onto the rock but he doens't seem to get the job done. Some of his agressive decisions are great but then he calls a play that leaves me scratching my head.

I'm still up in the air about him but I'm not please with any of the coaches aside from the Defenseive side. I'm also not pleased with some of our players who seem to be okay with mediocarty. This is the Steelers not the stinking Brownies.

I think it comes down to the fact that a lot of people outside of being Steelers fans aren't as nitpicky as we are. They look at the success the Steelers have had since Tomlin has been head coach and they figure that the experience of having had some great success will contribute to "righting the ship."

Granted, I have always believed that a lot of the team's success with Tomlin early on was more due to the experience of the Superbowl winning players that he inherited rather than just from Tomlin himself. But, the team has had some success after those days under Tomlin, but the last couple of years something hasn't been right. The talking heads outside of Steeler Nation who are expecting things to get better are looking at the bigger picture, whether that has any impact on what will happen or not.

My point was we already have a coach that is dealing with multiple injuries, inconsistent play and lack of player development. Tomlin has had more success than Edwards but I believe that's despite him not because of him. He inherited a SB team with HOF veterans. Let's see what he does now that he has to draft and develop his own talent. My guess is that Tomlin's success is Pittsburgh is a thing of the past. Luckily for him, he'll be able to blame it on aging veterans, etc...

The sarcasm font was a joke.

Some things can be fixed, some cannot. The areas of the team that just aren't very talented will have to wait a draft or two to be fixed.

Well, he will definitely get a chance to put his stamp on the team now, so we will see but there has been plenty of coaches who have inherited good teams, even SB teams and haven't done what Tomlin has done. Also, if it was merely a matter of having good players on a team, then why don't more teams repeat when they have won a SB? I don't care who is on a team, reaching the SB is extremely difficult, even more difficult winning it. I get what you are saying about injured players, inconsistent play though.

And I knew sarcasm font was a joke ;-)

I have my concerns about Tomlin, but I am willing to take a wait and see approach before formulating a final opinion. As I've stated before, Tomlin's legacy, whether good or bad, will be solidified over the next three years.

he is the one that kept those two backup qb's. you can't say because we had to play them gives him a pass.

remember we had another qb here and let him get away(hoyer).

he also stayed with that injured qb when we could have won that game if he inserted Charlie, when lefty was in so much pain he couldn't throw. no MT definitely doesn't get a pass on these grounds. ( i'm not saying I want him gone either just pointing out a fact or two).
