If they lose at home to the Ravens the atmosphere in the stadium will be toxic at a level not seen before. The Rooneys will be deafened by boos. Will it be enough to act and move on from Tomlin? Probably not, but it will put Mike T under unprecedented pressure.

I think if you’re Art you almost have to sit Mike T down and say that postseason success is a fundamental requirement next season or the team will be moving in a different direction, and there will be no more contract extensions.

Personally I think it’s past time to move on, but I can’t see the team firing him. The above is probably the best we will get.

My wife's ex-husband dated a lady (before he married my wife, but they knew each other) for a while who then dated and married his dad. She then took his dad for everything he had in the divorce......lol

Based on the years since Ben left, I have very little confidence in the Steelers properly developing a QB from the draft. They have a horrible record of it. In fact, the Steelers have never developed a successful starting QB under Mike Tomlin. Ben was drafted 3 years before Tomlin took over so Tomlin can't take credit for his development IMO. Poor scouting, lack of urgency with Ben on the team, bad coaching? I can't say the reason, but they have only brought in retreads and rookies that never hit that franchise QB level.

Draft picks since Tomlin took over:

    2008 Dennis Dixon
    2013 Landry Jones
    2017 Joshua Dobbs
    2018 Mason Rudolph
2022 Kenny Pickett and Chris Oladokun
    2025 Will Howard

Other QBs that have been on the Steelers active roster since 2007:

    Charlie Batch
    Michael Vick
    Dwayne Haskins
    Mitch Trubisky
    Justin Fields
    Russell Wilson
    Aaron Rodgers

Thats what good coaches do, they delegate. Clearly all HC’s are involved with the game planning but IMO Tomlin oversteps. Like the no MOF, he absolutely hates turnovers and its high risk throwing there. MOF is a staple of Arthur Smiths offense and it’s been largely absent during the season so why isnt it used more :hmm:

If both teams were fully healthy....I think the Steelers would be home underdogs.

The Ravens, on paper, have the superior team.

Luckily this thing won't be played on paper. That way, the Steelers have a chance to break all our hearts!

That is a list of failures in scouting rather than development. Football Jesus couldn't develop that list into a franchise QB.

I mean, maybe if you could squish all of them together into some sort of Franken QB...maybe...

In all fairness they haven’t had to try for most of Tomlins tenure. Obviously they drafted Jones, Dobbs, Rudolph etc but they were mid round dart throws that they drafted as backups. The only one they really invested in was Pickett, and he simply wasn’t good enough. Even he was drafted later in the first round and there were legitimate questions about his suitability as an NFL starter

As you said, Mike Tomlin oversteps.

Colin Cowherd has been right about Tomlin since 2017. Mike Tomlin is tone deaf to Offense. That isn't changing; doubly so on Sunday Night.

    Umm

    He’s the head coach

    How can he overstep

Now he might be stomping on the petunias but he is the head landscaper

    Very simple.

Tomlin oversteps by not allowing his own Coordinator in Arthur Smith to run his own Offense. As already described, Arthur Smith historically targets the MOF. Tomlin has been on record in avoiding the MOF. Some of Aaron's best throws, even this season, have come from the MOF.

Tomlin avoids that area like the plauge. Arthur Smith and Aaron Rodgers have had tremendous success when using it. As such, much of the Offensive Playcalling is designed to not target that area.

Sorry my guy but I don't think I follow your logic here.

May you kindly elaborate?! No seriously. I would like to respond here.

    He is the head coach

He can not overstep it’s his job

Now if he’s getting involved and not making things better then he’s ……

    …….stomping on the petunias

    Ah... I see.

Gotcha. Fair point then. Perhaps "overstep" was the incorrect term here. Tomlin's lack of consistency then is what I was getting at.

I think overstepping is also pretty accurate for what AQL is referring to in regards to dictating to the OC. I’ve had my best success as a leader by letting the capable leaders under me do their jobs.

I agree and allow me expand that point to not developing 1st round picks. so that gives us 3 failures of Tomlin:
Failure to develop a franchise QB.
Failure to bring in quality assistant coaches.
Failure to draft/develop 1st round picks since 2012 except for Watt.

Basically, you are not a micro manager. I'm the same way, even with my team that are not leaders. I'm always teaching and encouraging them to do the job they want, not the one they have.

Aaron Rodgers hasn’t thrown to the MOF for 3+ seasons.

    Wilson hasn’t for years.

    Rudolph didn’t in Tennessee either.

Smith didn’t call a ton of MOF stuff when he was playing crappy QBs in Atlanta.

it’s not a Tomlin thing. It’s not a Smith thing. It’s a below average QB thing.
