I'm late to respond to this in thread.

We addressed this through PMs. No need to chime in everyone. We can move on.

I agree with BFT on the "pushover" boss analogy. I've seen many bosses in corporate America who were just "one of the team," and never held anyone accountable. They were well liked, and ineffective. I do get the impression that Tomlin is "one of the guys." As I mentioned in another thread, just go back to the foolishness on the sidelines in Baltimore last year to see him behaving just like the players taking stupid penalties.

So, I certainly don't think being a "player's coach" has anything to do with race (or even age). It's about style.

Have I not said he is in over his head? I hate to say I told you so. This is not a racist comment,
I don't care if your blue if you can play or coach.

I agree BUT I didn't think it was derogatory. I thought it just meant "soft to the players" I would have never thought it had anything to do with color!

"players coach" is great if you're winning, baaaaaad if your team is 8-8 two seasons in a row after being tebowed and now losing to Tampa bay. Coach is feeling the heat and is NOT responding well. I hope he can get his mind right and rally this team but this interview shows a disconnect between reality and his mind.

He needs to own it. If you've just won the Super Bowl and someone calls him a "player's coach" he's not crying about age or race. He smiles and says "thank you" and owns it. Only when losing is "players coach" or "disciplinarian coach" a bad thing.

Tom Coklin from Giants was taking major flak from players and media for making a big deal about being on time for meetings, then he won some super bowls and no one is critical of his ways now.

I can only assume that he'd call the well deserved criticism he gets here a hate crime.

IMO this is a sign that he's starting to feel the heat and is losing it.

But he did cal Dick LeBeau an old white guy.. How can he not call him an old coach! Or an old guy!

Holy Crap! This needs to be seen for more than just an interview.

How about TB.'s response? 100% correct. If Coach T feels this, then how are the players not recognizing it also? Steeler's org is at a boiling point.

Rooney's were some of the biggest proponent's of integrating head coach positions... did they have to start with Tomlin, though?
I am sure this gets swept under the rug while the domestic abuse thing is still hot but oh my... this can't be left to rest.

I don't care what he called Bell. I do care about the lack of focus, the lack of discipline, and guys getting stupid penalties because they just have to have a choreographed "look at me" moment after they make a god damn play.

I still view Tomlin as a guy who really has no philosophy, has no real identity of what he wants his team to be. He appears to grab bag at the way he handles situations and with his players all too often. Here is a perfect example.

Think of the loss in Cleveland a few years ago when Roeth was hurt and Batch had a crummy game. Mendenhall fumbled - taken out of the game. Dwyer fumbles - taken out of the game. I think someone else fumbled and we were down to our 4th string running back. Where is the context of the situation? I get it fumbling is bad, but for all the criticism of Mendenhall he was a good back and he actually was not excessively turnover prone. Sit him a series - sure - but take your best back out for the entire game, really? Especially with a backup QB who hadn't started a game for 2-3 years?

Then you take yesterday - Bell runs for 15 yards or so, gets a taunting penalty and NOTHING - even though you have a guy in Blount who is basically worthy of a starting role himself. You mean Bell couldn't be sat for a series or two?

Players coach - it appears to be yes - especially for many guys who get in his good graces and then are afforded as much slack as they want. Apparently Bell is on a pedestal w/Tomlin and can do no wrong - even when he obviously has.

Really? He's going to get beat up now because an open mic picked up what he said? Unless I am mistaken and he was mic'ed, this is a total non issue. It was funny as hell though.

Of all my issues with Coach Tomlin, that doesn't even register. It was funny. I see no issue with it at all.

Or were people screaming years ago when Cowher went to yell at Harrison for a bone headed move? Harrison just says, "S**t happens." And Cowher not only started laughing, he had to tell the rest of the coaches. And he was mic'ed... by NFL Films. (For the record, I thought that was funny too)

TTF and rule, I've been part of this board long enough to know that both of you are very intelligent and articulate individuals and neither of you strike me as being the least bit naive. So....don't give me this crap. ;)

What do you think Tomlin meant when he said he was called a player's coach "because of my race" and went on to comment that DL doesn't get referred to as a player's coach because he's "an old white guy"?

Come on now gents. Let's get real, shall we?

“That is the first I ever heard if it,” Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette said on Monday’s PFT Live. “He also mentioned young coach too, that kind of took that as a not an insult, but he wasn’t real happy with people calling him a players’ coach because he thought it was a little racist and because he was a young coach. There were times Bill Cowher was considered a players’ coach here, and I never thought of it as being a bad thing. Maybe he takes it as such, maybe he thinks people believe he’s coddling the players, which is not the case, I don’t think, any more than Bill Cowher coddled players. I was a little surprised by that.”

the best comment i found is this :
He IS a player coach. He even gets on the field to block return attempts.

You're one of the people with their panties in wad over this. Set aside your hatred for Tomlin for 30 seconds and actually listen to the what he says. Don't add or subtract words, but actually freaking listen for a change.
