I see this team moving in a very positive direction, you don't.

If the Steelers don't do well this season and then stuggle next season, I'm all for firing Mike Tomlin. But that's my window for this current roster..this season and next season.

If the Steelers do well in that time frame, are you going to give Tomlin props for anything, or does he have to win two super bowls to meet your requirements?

I said the 2017 defense was good, it wasn't great like the defenses of the 2000's we got used to. That 2017 Jacksonville game we just got outclassed in the coaching department. Sure, losing Shazier severely crippled the defense since our depth there was suspect... and yes the back end wasn't nearly as good as the front 7. But, the front 7 was really good and it still got gashed.

A defense that looked like the below should have been better than it was. We just got thoroughly out coached in that game and suffered the consequences for it. Sh!t happens.

Haden Heyward - Hargrave - Tuitt Gay
    Watt - Bince - Moats - Dupree
    Mitchell Davis

The 2011 defense was definitely on the older end, but it still performed. 1st in pts against, total yards, passing yards against, and 8th in rushing yards against. It was a really good defense. Definitely was a team that should have gotten pretty far in the post season.

Good post, although i agree we underachieved during the killer B era. The playoff losses to the browns in 2020, the loss to the Jaguars in 17 (where the team and coach were looking ahead to their rematch with the Pats), were really frustrating. i'm not going to put that all on injuries or suspensions, some of that falls on just not being prepared. it happened during the reg season against bottom feeders as well, this team was just caught flatfooted too many times - i don't know if that's the fault of the coordinators or Tomlin or both - but it cost us playoff positioning.

I agree about looking past the Jaguars a bit. I do know that the Jesse James TD catch that the refs ruled wasn't a catch cost them some pretty damn good playoff position as well. It seemed like not much went right for the team during those years. Some was out of their control. Some of it was overconfidence or ego. Defensive breakdowns. Losing Shazier...the guy they built the defense around. IN any case, they just were never able to seal the deal and the planets never aligned for them. Definitely a disappointment.

In the regular season it would have been nice to see them put together a 14-2 record and be the #1 seed, but they were never consistent enough to do that.

and if i were starting over, they would be strong considerations, instead of Tomlin. that is the point.

Just because I loathe Mike Tomlin doesn’t mean I don’t want the team and ultimately him to do well. Let’s start by winning a playoff game and go from there.

That's how it should be, and I didn't accuse you of that. It does feel that way with some people around here though.

You did seem to say that I was celebrating a 9-win season as if I don't want the team to win more.

Ultimately, we all want the team to win. I really think they have rebuilt the roster and the wins and playoff wins are coming soon.

I’m pretty excited for this season more so than the last few. Still obviously worried about coaching Canada more so and if Pickett can improve this year.

Who cares? McDermott has a young top 5 QB too, Ben was washed up the last few years.

How did they get out coached if Fournette ran for 100 yards? Guys like Heyward and Tuitt are supposed to step up in those situations, and Ben two early turnovers against the #1 Jaguars defense gifted them 14 points.

I just thought I would stir the turd with this article

No playoff wins, no problem here

A six-year drought of playoff wins apparently hasn't dented the opinion of many media members when it comes to Mike Tomlin.

The Steelers coach finished fourth in Associated Press balloting for who should be named the best coach in the NFL. A panel of nine AP pro football writers contributed to the list, ranking the top five head coaches by making their selections based on current status (keep that in mind) entering the 2023 season.

Kansas City head coach Andy Reid got all but one first-place vote. That went to the runner-up, Bill Belichick of the New England Patriots. Tomlin's opening-week opponent, Kyle Shanahan of the San Francisco 49ers, finished third.

Baltimore Ravens coach John Harbaugh was fifth, one slot behind his longtime AFC North rival.

Here's why the AP put Tomlin in the top five, "Tomlin has never had a losing season in 16 years with the Steelers. He had Ben Roethlisberger for 15 of those seasons but finished 9-8 with rookie Kenny Pickett taking over at QB in 2022. Tomlin has won a Super Bowl in two appearances."

I agree, but I would put him ahead of Shanahan. Yes Shanahan is a better OC, but that doesn't make You a better HC.

Steelers are currently bottom 3 in team offense and defense. Not what a top 3 or 5 coach produces.
