It’s always fun to push this button

    3. Mike Tomlin, Pittsburgh Steelers

He's been on the job for 17 years and has yet to have a losing season in Pittsburgh. During that time, he’s made the playoffs 10 times, reached the AFC title game three times and the Super Bowl twice, winning the big game after the 2008 season. Tomlin’s ability to get the best out of his players and consistently maintain a tough, no-nonsense defense in a competitive division like the AFC North makes him one of the top coaches in the NFL — and one that players seek out to play for when they reach free agency. Tomlin, 51, is third among active coaches with 166 wins in the regular season. —Williams

That can't possibly be true! All the "experts" claim that anyone would be better than Tomlin!

Mike Tomlin is a HOF Coach no doubt.

But as we are seeing in New England, the game is changing and if you don't change with it, you are 1-4.
    17-years is a long time, I wouldn't care if he did 25.
The real pivot point is being able to build something with your GM and having scouts that find the talent to fit it.
That applies to coaching too. I do think they need some new blood in the ranks.

So, if I am GM, Mike and I have to have an understanding that this is his ship, but we want the best staff we can get.
I don't know who made the decision to allow Canada yet another season. That's the break down. That's what needs fixed, poor decisions like that.

We need to get to playoffs and actually win some games, remember he has had a supposed HOF QB his whole career minus these past two years. It is time for us to be relevant again.
The FO has provided him with a winning roster, we need to see some playoff wins.

last 2 playoff wins were when the bengals bungled and they kicked 6 fgs vs the alex smith led chiefs

I saw the list and to me its a joke. No way he is top 5 currently let alone 3rd.

The list came out this week based upon the below criteria

"Our writers listed their 10 best NFL head coaches based on their confidence in each coach were he to lead a team right now. This is about the present day (Week 6 in the 2023 season) as opposed to a full-career perspective."

I have 0 idea how Nick Siriani or Mike McDaniel could be below Tomlin. Historically Tomlin should be ranked higher.

Guy has won 3 playoff games in 13 years after this season and he is the third best current HC???

Sad state of affairs in the NFL if that’s the case.

This. For that matter, people may have you confused regarding your critiques of him. You never stated he isn't worthy of Canton, Ohio.

You have critiqued him on his most recent string of letdowns; his last playoff win of 2016 to start with.

Top three currently in the NFL?! As we sit here now?! I would say Top 10 for sure but Top 5 seems too rich for me. That said though, this current team of his can easily be 1-4 as opposed to 3-2. How Tomlin continues to perform herculean acts of greatness by snatching victory from the jaws of defeat continues to amaze me. I would imagine it never ceases to amaze others the same.

This all said, given these rankings were based off of this year, how is getting ones door's blown off by a Rookie Head Coach and Kyle Shanahan worth constituting such a high mark?! Never mind that, has FOX Sports been seeing of the same Offensively Offensive performances as all of us have?!

Me personally overall?! I am happy Tomlin is reputed so highly among his peers. I just wish the teams overall performance reflected how highly others think of him in 2023.

These lists are subjective. If you had 5 different groups of writers submit a top ten list, you would have 5 completely different lists. I think it's safe to say Tomlin would make the top 10 on any of the lists. 3 is way too high IMO.

The Tebow debacle is what made me a Tomlin hater. He is not a good coach.

We need an X's and O's type coach, not a buddy. The most unprepared coach and staff in all the league. Don't always be fooled by stats, they can tell a lie sometimes.

It's weird, maybe I'm getting old, but I don't remember the last time the Steelers made the playoffs.

I do not want to presume, or state things that are not truthful. You have shared some things about having either worked with or at least experience with some 'insiders' within the NFL family. Saying that not to brown nose (lol), but just respect the views of those posters who have more knowledge of how things work from within and without, and the differences in organizations. How much of the calculations in the things you stated does Art figure in?? While the involvement of owners on certain teams is well know, usually as a distraction to operations, rarely do we hear the Rooney's name, but certainly Omar and company still have to operate within the perimeters set.

So in your opinion was bringing Canada back something Omar had any real decision in, if MT wanted him and he was still under contract, how much weight does that put on Omar's chain of authority? On the late 90's there was a schism between Cowher and Donahue, that reportedly came to the point Bill put his resignation of the Rooney desk and said him or me. They chose Bill and hired Colbert. On the outside we do not see that conflict between Omar and MT, but one has to wonder how long this underperforming wcan continue.

Big difference between the Steelers and what is happening in New England. Bill B. pushed Brady out the door there. Bill B. is the GM......Tomlin did not push Ben out nor is he the GM.

I’m on the fence of whether I think getting rid of Tomlin would solve the problem. I truly believe that it’s a team of coaches that makes a team successful.

I was the head coach of baseball and basketball for many years and I wasn’t a player coach at all, I was the better coach to determine the strategies, the matchups, the plays, when to take a player out, when to bunt…etc… However my assistant coach was a players coach and it just worked perfectly.

I truly believe that if Tomlin had a great assistant and great coordinators we would see a huge difference in the play on the field.

When the Bears won the super bowl Buddy Ryan didn’t even let Mike Ditka the head coach in the defensive meetings
