This guy plays too far back. He's never in position to make plays ....have you all noticed how he's never in position to intercept anything?? How you gonna cover the middle playing +25 yards back?? Notice how a guy like Charles Woodson or Ed Reed not play so far back. They make plays while our safteties don't...

Idk daddymac maybe that's where they want him to play? I wouldn't know if it was, just a possible explanation....

Mitchell has played really well this year though. Good to see him put the tough season last year behind him.

Now we just need to find a suitable SS to pair with him. Allen is about done and both Golden and Thomas suck. This defense (fully healthy of course) is about a SS and a CB from being really darn good.

As I stated a few weeks back, Will Allen at starting position is
a real joke. 2 games is about all he is worth MM no home run here.
You are right Mac, we have serious problems at the safety position.
Tackling is a serious problem, you have to want to tackle.

That's how deep a lot of coordinators want their deep safety. Not saying I agree with the concept all the time but just think have we allowed that kind of TD's that Chargers gave to Wheaton when their deep safety bit on short route. A lot of teams teach the FS to never get beat deep when they are responsible of deep middle. I think MM has been really solid doing what they ask him to do.

As I have said before in other threads. Mike Mitchell is playing really well this year. Playing with a ton of enthusiasm and hitting hard. I like how he hits and trys to strip the ball.. MM has alot of heart.

I'm thinking if we are trying to put more pressure on the QB with blitzes etc. keeping Mitchell back just keeps us from being burned on big plays. Trade of the interception potential vs the potential of giving up a TD?

Mac I disagree that Allen is a joke. Yes the safety position is weak and should be upgraded next season. Handing Thomas the starting position obviously was premature. Allen comes in to save the day again. Not perfect. But not a joke. Golden coming in for Allen when he got nicked shows what they think of Thomas. Mitchell is playing better. Golden gave up a TD as well.

I think Mitchell has played much better this season, and he seems to be improving every week. I think he's evolving into an adequate starter. Allen and Golden were too slow in their reaction times to handle Gates. However, I place responsibility for the 2nd TD on Butler. That was an example of why you limit blitzes against Rivers. The result was obvious the second that Cockrell started moving forward. Golden should have never been put in the position of having to man up on Gates starting 10-15 yards off the ball like that.

Idk that they necessarily have Thomas the job, but gave him an opportunity to take the job and run with it. He didn't. He earned the nickname "touchdown Thomas" and that's why Allen is playing. I am glad we have the guy, but this is the last possible season we can roll him out as the starter. We need to upgrade in the draft

Yep, Golden should not have been in that position. My fear with the way our defense is playing is against the Tight Ends. They seem to be killing us, and we got a couple more great tight ends that we are going to face.

Maybe Shazier when he's healthy can be our savior. But that will also mean less blitzing from the middle line backers. That's when we really get burnt from the tight ends. Already thinking about the tight end from Cincy and how are we going to handle him.

I disagree. I think our safeties are doing well. The only item is our entire defense needs to tackle better. Right now teams have to pass against us to move the ball, especially last night. What I loved was how aggressive our corners were and how quickly we neutralized most deep passes. My biggest concern on a short week is our depth on defense. Playing OT then playing on Monday night with a defense that saw close to 50 plays in the 2nd half and a game again Sunday.

allen got burnt clear down the field and then for the TD by the TE. you have to at least be within 3 yards of the guy you are covering. the missed tackles also. i can see this coming from some of the younger guys that don't see much time ever but allen is a long time vet. he has no business starting in the league. he is a guy to come in for a hand full of plays to spell a starter. if shamarko was failing that badly we should have seen it and made some moves to get someone. golden is also far from the answer and he could have and should have been replaced this year early. we have nothing more than ST's guys and we are trying to make them every down players in the NFL. big fail by MT and colbert. we really need to take one of our corners and play him as a safety to help the coverage. if they are a decent tackling corner they can play some safety. it's bitten us already and it will again.
