Am I missing something here or is this a big surprise? I was under the impression he'd start the season on PUP meaning he'd be out at least 6 games. Unless I don't understand some kind of technicality, this means he will be ready before then. I would imagine it has something to do with Redman's recent injury problems.

Sorry can't post link, but it's on Labriola's twitter.

I'm not surprised. Although Colbert said he thinks it takes a full year to be fully healed, I don't think it's a stretch for Mendy to be healed enough to play by week 1, or at the very least before week 7. Adrien Peterson is basically ready to play, so no reason Mendy can't as well. Not sure if the explosiveness will be there or not, and he probably won't be more than 5-10 touches in his first couple games, but it won't shock me to see him out there week 1.

This is a game changer to prospective rosters though. I know that most of us had built rosters WITHOUT him on the list. As far as I can tell, that would mean we have more runners than we anticipated on the roster.

    3 QBs
    5 RBs
    1 FB
    3 TE
    5 WR
    9 OL

    That is 26.

    7 DL
    8 LB
    5 CB
    4 S

    That is 24.

It would not suprise me if Batch doesn't make opening day roster, we carry a 5th S or 9th LB for a game, and then make the switch after we are healthy of bringing Batch back.

It could also mean that we don't carry a FB and we carry an extra LB and an extra S for that first game.

Glad to hear this. I've been excited to see what Haley can do with Mendy in this offense.

I would cut Charlie too. I don't see him going anywhere else. He's a real insurance policy when ever we need him and not on the 53 man roster or pay roll.

I started a whole thread about this a few days ago when Adrian Peterson was removed from the PUP list, and then deleted it because I was tired of talking about it and didn't want to argue. All along I wondered why AP was expected to be ready for week 1, and in fact was practicing with 3 weeks of preseason to go, and Mendy was expected to maybe be ready for the 7th game, or maybe show up around December. Seems strange considering their injuries were 1 week apart, their surgeries 3 weeks apart, and Mendenhall is a few years younger than Peterson. Both players said don't count them out for the season opener, but only Peterson was taken seriously.

The only answer I heard that made even a little sense was that we didn't need Mendenhall as badly as Minnesota needed Peterson. We have a good passing game (probably) and good backups (before they got hurt) and a good defense. That makes sense, but I still have a major problem with it: if their injuries were identical (I expect no one really knows how identical they were or whose was worse, including the doctors), and we were going to let Mendy sit an extra 6 weeks to heal properly, that more than implies that the Vikings were rushing back Peterson faster than necessary. That seems retarded, and stupid, even for them. So I kept hope alive that everyone was crazy, he would not be left on PUP, and if he had to miss any time they'd just deactivate him and he could return for week 3 or something.

But this is definitely sooner than I'd imagined. I don't expect they'll rush him if he's not ready, especially the way Kevin Colbert talks. It would be foolish to do this because of the injuries to the other backs. If he's really ready, then that's awesome news.

I asked the question months ago because of AP saying he was coming back and the relationship in timelines. I don't remember the thread title or who commented back, but somebody here had a pretty decent medical response. Wish I had something more scientific to add but I just plain forgot because it made enough sense. Even thought that makes little sense (if it was so important I should have remembered for the future.) I basically threw my shoulders un and said OK. Oh well...

First off, I think the Steelers did the right thing by removing him from the PUP list, Mendy can play in any or none of the first six games. If he is not ready, other than that extra roster spot they lose nothing else. If he is ready by say Week 2, we don't want to say later "We should have taken him off of the PUP list and now we have to wait five more weeks!" I think we all know how much more powerful our offense could be with Mendy in there, although I also like Redman's game. The Steelers have stated again and again that they will not rush him into game action. My big fear is that it being a contract year for Mendy is that he will want to come back too quickly and even push himself too yard to try and put up astounding numbers to try and earn an even bigger payday next year.

I wonder what it would do to PWP if both Mendy and Wallace are starting in week 1 :lolol:

Then it's a good strategic move from the organization.

my opinion of the situation is just getting them in pads and getting them just a little familiar with the offense. max and mendy both may be well enough to do some running of plays at a half speed type pace. no real live contact but just getting a feel with the first team and how it's flowing. this way they can have a little bit more of it absorbed when they are ready to go. as somebody said they could play in one of the first six or none of them, but when they are ready, they have a feel for it in pads looking at a defense. it's part of quickening the rehab process. they would have to make room for these guys anyway, they have to have inactives every game anyway.

I am glad to see Mendy coming back. I think he gets a bad wrap from alot of guys that us undeserved (they take their off field issues with his personality to the playing field and see him through the opposite of rose colored glasses). I think he can be very dynamic and Haley will use him to his strengths in ways BA never did. He is talented.

Concernign the part in red above, I have a hard time believing professional atheletes actually play things out this way. It is only fan perception, else every star would have their best years in contract years, and that is not the case. I feel they allways are driven to be the best they can -- if a RB is capable of being a lead leader, he would want to be that every year, not just one year to get paid. These guys have a ton of drive to be the best thaey can, otherwise they would not have made it to the NFL.
