Mendys fumble hurt but to say that is why we lost is ridiculous. Ben played bad he throw bad picks he missed wallace wide open in the end zone that wiuld have gave us the lead. The defense didnt play very good either. That was an all around bad game and without mendy we arent in the super bowl. He carried the team when ben was suspended he out rushed and had more tds then rice that year. He hasnt had anything that was even considered a decent oline since he showed up here.

This sums it up just about perfectly for me. Mendy just seems to be one of those players who people have it in for, and no amount of inconsistencies in their arguments seem to change that.

The "Steelers-type" player is a handy general claim, but any closer analysis will always pick holes in it. After all, our offensive philosophy has been changing all the time over the team history.

I don't know if anyone remembers that the Osama tweets was just the tip of the iceberg, he tweeted a lot of questionable stuff even before that...He also had a total falling out with his college coaches and blasted them in the media...He gets benched for not knowing the game plan. I don't blame the SB on him though.

Bottom line is he doesn't make it easy to be likeable, and the Steelers know first hand you can find UDFA who can perform like probowlers.

Like most RB's, I think he is expendable. There are only 4 or 5 game changers in the league.

Sorry, I gagged a little when I thought I understood you to say you still like our pics from '08,notably Sweed. So I can hopefully get this bad taste out of my mouth, what was it you really meant to say? If it's more of the same, I'll need to go gargle some Listerine.

I meant it, but you might not be understanding what I meant. Obviously Sweed did not work out, for a variety of reasons. I'm not saying I support spending a 2nd round pick on someone who ends his career with 6 catches (unless it's an OT maybe). I meant that the picks were the right ones at the right time, and going back to that day, I'd have made them. I'm one of the guys that thinks Sweed was never given a proper chance. I think if he'd been allowed to see the field, he would have been successful. I think at the very least we should have tried, and didn't.

I don't support the results, but I support the picks. Example: you draft a great player in the middle of the first round, he appears to be making a push for rookie of the year, and then dies in a car accident after 5 games. Obviously the results suck. 5 games from a first round pick? Horrible! No matter how well he played, that's horrible. But it was still a good draft pick. You can't blame the actions on draft day.

Obviously those circumstances are different from these ones. I exaggerated to separate the meaning between a good pick and a successful outcome. But I believe Mendenhall is a great back and since all the best OL players were gone, he was a steal where we got him. What's happened since then (an underrated and overcriticized career, that admittedly should be better -- messed up by his OC, his OL, and two injuries) is not what I like. I'd rather we helped him out more and viewed him accurately... but I support the pick. Plus, FWP was already done at that point, but no one knew it yet. We really had no one else so it was a huge need.
