there is an article in the tribune today about blount. just alittle piece. I was wondering who is old enought to remember him play. I loved him. he was and still is my favorite steeler. I got to thinking though, I wonder if he could play today with the new rules. If any of you guys never seen him play you need to find some old footage. the guy was a beast.

I never got to see him play but from what I've seen from old games and NFL Films he is my favorite Steeler also. I will go read that. There are some great Mel Blount videos on you tube also. One of my favorite quotes is from Mel Blount "Football is a physical game. Well, it USED to be anyway." Also there is a great clip from 07 on you tube where we stomped the Ravens on MNF and Mel Blount called them "pathetic" during a sideline interview. If you didn't love him before you HAVE to love him now! LOL.

I'm of the age where I was lucky to see him play on TV. He was a force of nature. My brother used to complain (still does) that he was a dirty player which is hilarious coming from someone who was a HUGE Raiders fan. Let's see............Tatum and Atkinson were tough but Blount and Shell were dirty? Ummmmmmmmmm, okay! Defensively, from that era, I still have to say that Lambert and Dwight White were my favorites but Blount was a beast and, no, I don't think he could play in Goodell's NFL. :yeehaw:

Really in a way Mel Blount is sorta to blame for Goodell's NFL. LOL. He was the one that was jamming guys at the line and riding them all the way down the field so they made the illegal contact rule which is unofficially known as the "Mel Blount Rule". So if you think about it Mel Blount had such an impact that they changed the rules to counteract his, and the WHOLE Steelers D's, style of play and they STILL won! That's pretty amazing.

In all fairness to Roger Goodell.......(I just threw up a little bit). The Mel Blount rule was implemented in 1978.
I was just a young kid back then but I still remember how great he was and that they put that rule in place.

I watched him play, and he was a force in the secondary, at 6-3 he had the height factor over most receivers and his physical style of play pretty much made him a shut down corner. Hard to believe the scouts let him fall to us in the 3rd round of the 1970 draft, but stars do drop in your lap from time to time in the draft, especially in those years....

I was 11 when he retired. Remember watching him the last couple of years of his career.

While you're on that topic, some other thread talking about going back to relive the 80's popped up this week and I was confused.

Because, even in the 80's teams didn't want to play the Steelers and knew they'd come out of the game banged up!

That's what I've been screaming on here since we lost to the Broncos. We don't have the Steeler mystique of people being intimidated to play us. We don't seem like we hit harder than other people. We don't seem like we have the killer instinct to pound a qb in to the turf over and over. It's just so disheartening to watch. I GUARANTEE you we're gonna make Romo look like Tom Brady when we play them this year. IF James and Troy are not there. Even then I'm not sure we can dominate without them being 100%.
