I was told today that he will be coming back to Tennessee to work out in off season. he is very excited about the prospect of starting next year. apparently coaching staff has gotten through to him cause that is all he has ever needed. the light might have finally come on and if that is the case look out.

this kid has no idea how strong he really is

I don't see him starting next season no matter how great of shape he shows up, McClendon will be the starter in 2015.

That's how I see it too, until McLendon gets hurt. I think he'll be a very solid #2 guy going forward, and I wouldn't be too surprised to see him turn into a starter. He certainly looks better than McLendon did at this stage in his career. If Dan can get Steve's work ethic, he could turn into a monster.

McCullers was a pleasant surprise, but has there ever been a stud NT in a 3-4 defense over about 6ft. or 6'1"? Leverage is an issue with guys that tall. I think he may be better suited as a DT in a 4-3 alignment. Hmmmm?

He was still pretty raw at the end of this season. Only playing time will fix that. So it is unlikely he will start game 1 next season. But 16 games is a long time. If he gets playing time, it will be up to him to prove he is the best player.

Personally, I sm concerned with his height and his ability to get leverage. But we will see.

Are you saying game 1 of 2015, or all of 2015? Just curious.

maybe. I have seen flashes from both. I can tell that Daniel in my opinion has a bigger upside. all he needs is confidence to become a pro bowl type. I really believe that. if he gets coached up and some confidence he is twice the play McClendon is

That's what I've said about him too. He is amazingly powerful and makes it look easy to just sling dudes back but it seems like he doesn't get off his blocks. If that happens it's gonna be awesome. I'm cheering for him big time. I'm sure you saw him when he was here in town but I didn't see him til the Titans game and I just couldn't believe how huge he is.

In either scenario... I'm good with it. A huge NT? First time for everything.

Levon Kirkland wasn't a proto typical Inside backer according to measurements and I loved what he turned into.

Is a project right now, shows some signs
of being able to play at next level. If the coaches can get him in the right mind set we have our own Nagta (SP).

Ted Washington who was 6'5 to name a recent example. McCullers is a skyscraper though. I'll be happy if he just keeps bringing the intensity.

I still don't see why we can't just have McCullers lie down across the length of the LOS, and then roll sideways at the snap. It would fill the space of 3 linemen, and free us up 2 extra edge rushers.

BFT, can you text Tomlin with my idea?

With multiple fronts he will contribute. He is a monster. Needs more reps. I like what I saw this past season. He was pushing OL into the backfield. The conventional 3 down nose is outdated. McClendon will start in the conventional format.

    This.
Same here, except I don't ever see him being a 0-tech starter. I also have no idea if he has work ethic issues. I think he's probably a really hard worker, but technique, mental errors, and overcoming his physical obstacles on the field are issues he has to overcome. Obviously he's a mountain of a man, but being that large can have it's disadvantages on the D-line.

TTF, no work ethic issues at all. he was just at Tennessee for a couple years and it was a bad time. coaches in and out and he played in 3 systems. he was just lacking any consistency. he truly is a gentle giant. he is scared of doing the wrong thing so he just kinda goes thru the motions sometimes.

all he is ever needed is coaching. if a coach gets thru to him, he would walk thru a wall for him

Yeah the cards have a guy about the same size as McCullers. He said he lines up a yard deeper off the football to give him the space he needs to dominate.

Richard Seymour from New England was a stud and he played over the nose on passing downs.

Someone help me out here...are there not different versions of the 3-4? Do some require the NT to be a Casey Hampton type while others cam excel with a tall monster like Seymour? I have not seen a definitive take on this point.

He was a 4-3 DT. He moved outside when they switched to a 3-4 if I'm not mistaken.

Yes there are. Your main difference is the one gap 3-4 vs the two gap. Excelling consistently with a tall monster 0 tech seems unlikely.

I would like to see them line him up at an angle to the center somewhat like what they did with Joe Greene and the slant 4-3 except that instead of exploding off the ball and getting into the gap I want them to gameplan to have Shazier left open for a straight shot at the QB. Have Dan slam into the center from angle and use his strength to force him into the guard, have Shazier lined up right behind him where he can hit the hole with speed. I would also have the OLB blitz causing any RB to pick their poison, pick up Shazier and leave the edge rusher to get to the QB, pick up the edge and Shazier pressures the QB. This of course wouldn't work against running QB's but guys like Brady and Manning would crumble without being able to escape the pocket.
