I think they should start McCullers and let him play the first 2 downs, then put Hargrave in on 3rd downs he's supposed to have some pass rush ability. With Hargrave starting we haven't seen him make any plays yet.

This would be ok IF we played the classic 3-4 and had OLB who had pass rushing abilities.

We don't !!! We play a lot of subpackages ( nickel dime ) using only 2 DL.

Tomlin and Butler both want to bring pressure with four players. This is ok and in my world the better way..... Problem is the 4 players..... Moats and JJ Can NOT part of the 4. Dupree has the size and speed but he's IR.... Deebo is too small ( hahaha ) but try and tell him that. He is too old though. He's great in relief but he can't be counted on full time all season.

If that is to happen then Pittsburgh should consider to transition this defense into more of a 4-3 one with 3-4 looks as opposed to the opposite...

    However.. this will not happen.

So make the four players 91, 97, 79, and 92 (or 48 when he's back). There's no rule saying you can't play 3 DL in nickel, it's just what the Steelers choose to do. If that doesn't work, they'll need to send five more.

According to charting sending 5 is most successful this year followed by 3... Sending 4 this year has yielded the worse results defensively

I'm guessing that's because 2 of the 4 are Jones and Moats.

It may be one of those things where Hargrave is gonna need a year to get his man strength for the NFL, he hasn't made an impact yet....

This may have been posted already, but I heard on SNR that anytime we send a CB or Safety even if we still only send four that Butler considers that a Blitz. He said it's not about the # of players rushing, it's about the personnel.
    That sounds silly to me.

Whatever Butler is doing isn't working, time to scrap that 4 man rush. One lousy sack in three games is unacceptable.

I like Butler, but he sounds like a drunken old fool when he talks.

Yeah I've always thought of a blitz as an overwhelming amount of force coming at a qb from different angles and from different positions to confuse the qb in to making a mistake or taking a sack. I've never thought of a blitz as like "Oh the CB just went at the qb! WHAT A BLITZ!" LOL! If that's really what he said that sounds absurd to me as well.

I thought I heard that the other way around. The Steelers consider it a blitz if they send 5 or more, but the show hosts consider it a blitz if they send a DB or ILB. So you could drop 10 in coverage and send William Gay and Dave Bryan and David Todd would chart that as a blitz.

Can it actually be counted as a blitz if you don't send at least 5?

That's what the show hosts were saying they do - if an "unexpected pass rusher" in a 3-4 is rushing, it's a blitz according to them. That means any DB or ILB in their eyes. Not saying I necessarily agree, but that's how they see it.

Classic rookie mistake. That is the "surge" the blitz involves an air attack or a ballroom although the most common involves some German tanks and stressing of the second syllable. Blitz-KRIEG!

It was Adam Crowley's and Bob Labriola I believe. And they definitely said that's Keith Butler and the Steelers definition of a blitz. I actually heard it again the next morning again on replay.

Just a question I have watched Tuitt and Heyward rush a ton from the inside, why? We are this at LB why not let them rush from their position and have Big Dan or Hargrave in the middle and bring in a 3rd safety who could rush or drop back instead of a LB?

I have been thinking a lot about this and feel it would really confuse the linemen with who they have to match up with. Also if we do drop the S into coverage he matches up better with a RB the a LB, thoughts? I just hate seeing our ends on the inside, they don't match up well there. JMO

I think it is more about packages but still have to have run-stopping inside support.

I wouldn't mind seeing a little bit of that amoeba defense, Lebeau used to employ. Sprinkle it in here and there, give the offense something to think about. We seem so incredibly vanilla right now.
