"While Starks cautioned that he doesn’t believe Roethlisberger will be a bad teammate, he believes he was fired up over the team taking Rudolph, ostensibly the future of the position and Big Ben’s replacement."
“With Ben, he’s motivated because they drafted a third round quarterback in the draft and that fired him up a little bit,”

“And it’s not Ben being a bad teammate and is going to go in there and not talk to Mason Rudolph. But at the same time, it gets those competitive juices going. Ben’s a highly competitive dude. So he has to kind of psyche himself out a little bit. But also realize, ‘I dictate this. I’m still the face of this franchise at the quarterback position. I’ll let you know when I’m done.'”

Good for Ben. Guy’s a warrior. Mason hasn’t even played a down yet. Let’s pump the brakes till we see what the Kid can do.

At the same time why get upset over a third round pick?

Maybe less the pick, and more the realisation they’re looking for his replacement. A reminder of the time he has left for another ring. Maybe.

Ben has to also realize he can't just blindside the team and say I'm done without a plan in place. Did he get mad about the two 4th round picks? You're getting old Ben and at some point you have to face it. It's been 12 years since you won a SB.

If it gets the man's "competitive juices" flowing, who cares? I hope every player on the team plays like they could lose their job at any moment.

You're Rooney and Colbert. Last year,Ben suggests he might retire and he's going year to year. This year, he's all in for the next 3 years. Next year, God knows what he'll say.

Buying a little insurance by drafting a QB with upside, who slid down the draft board seems reasonable.

If Ben don't like it too bad. Are the Steelers supposed to act on whatever comes out his mouth at any given moment. If Ben gets beat up this year, and decides to retire, he'll have little concern with the state he left the team in. So Steeler Management devised PlanB in case that happens.

Ask Tommy Maddox how he felt when Ben was drafted. It happens. QBs (except for immortal Brady) get old and feeble.

Every time they've played NE the past 10yrs, all you heard the weeks before the game is how badly they wanted to play them, how they had scores to settle and that they're competitive juices were flowing.

All that's fine, but by itself it's not enough.

Yep, that is why I add the "play like they could lose their jobs" part! ;)

You want the coach to play like he could lose his job? I know, you meant coach like he could lose his job. I don't really think that is what motives a NFL coach. I think they have to have a mentality more akin to believing they are the best. I guess I really don't know what motives them as I have never been a NFL coach though!

I'm not convinced that is a coaching philosophy, however maybe it should be?

You have this backwards I think. Take out the "won't" and add "will" I know what you mean. Otherwise the "won't" fits Tomlin to the T.

Rothlisberger with a chip on his shoulder is dangerous. It was getting smaller and smaller in recent years. It's back, look out it should be good!

I'm sure Landry Jones and Dobbs were thrilled too :lolol:. Either way, some guys find motivation in different ways. Hopefully Ben is reminded of that every time he sees him in the QB room.
