It's not preseason, but here's a pimpin rookie Ben Roethlisberger in his 15-1 first year as a starter. I like Mason, but he's not at the caliber of Ben

Actually we do have 2004 games. Just not preseason, unless you count his first throw in preseason which they do have.

Ben pretty much lit it up from the beginning. I'm not seeing Mason make these types of throws, but it's still far too early to tell.

And Ben is a special player that doesn't come around all that often.

We learned something this week about speculation!

 

It *appeared* that Dobbs wasn’t given a fair shake... He played is way into the coaches belief that he was better than Landry. He was put into a scenario with the drafting of Mason that was “show out now, or be shown the door”. He also likely gets cut if he doesn’t have such a great game against the Panthers.

Speculation is what it is. Nobody on here knows everything about everything (or really anything about anything lol). I’m glad I was wrong here. Dobbs seems like a great kid.

 

Ben also had Duce Staley, Jerome Bettis, Hartings, Faneca, Smith on OL, Plaxico Burress, Hines Ward and Antwaan Randle El at his disposal. Everybody here says the Steelers are screwed if Ben goes down. Really? Have we seen Dobbs or Rudolph roll with AB, Bell, Pouncey, AV, DeCastro and JuJu? No... Dobbs and Rudolph were pretty much playing with 2nd and 3rd stringers... many of which are currently unemployed or making plans for the CFL.

 

Why, is that what you're into? You can always look up Caitlyn Jenner for that.

Good point, although they did have him play with the first string, he didn't have AB. You can see the difference, however in poise in the pocket and working through progressions. To Ben's advantage, the vids posted were of the regular season, which is further down the line.

 

as a Steeler fan you want to be rooting for mason. give him a couple years and I bet he will be almost as good as Ben. That's not a bad thing

 

Yes. The Steelers are screwed if Ben goes down.

In '04, Ben had no competition for the #2 spot... since Batch was on IR. Brian St. Pierre was #3. Naturally, Ben was more NFL-ready as a rookie than Dobbs and Rudolph. I'll agree to that, but before we say the season is doomed if Roethlisberger is out for any extended time, let us see how Dobbs plays with the 1s. We may be pleasantly surprised.

I was one of Dobbs biggest doubters before last week. If he can perform that well with a bunch of 3rd and 4th string scrubs, he should do well with the starters.

 

A first ballot HOFer that is not as good and consistent as he was 7-10 years ago. I know people don't want to hear that, but it's the truth. I'm thankful we've had Ben all of these years, but father time is creeping up on him.

 

dobbs is a dual threat. He is smart and looks like a baller. I think he could provide more for us right now, and Mason potentially can provide more later.

Agree. It's a good QB lineup, but other than Ben there's no regular season NFL experience... which is scary, but with the veteran leadership we have on offense, Dobbs would do fine if he had to play. It's all speculation at this point... but if I had to bet, I think Dobbs could deliver some W's with this offense. Opposing defenses, even in our own division, would have fits trying to defend his ability to take off and run at any given time.

Again, it's a good QB lineup... but not as good as Ben, Batch, Leftwich in the "experience department."

 

I think many of you have been spoiled by Ben. You think an aging Ben is still easily replaced. He is still the best QB on this roster and it's not even close.

You don't fall into Favre to Rogers, Bledsoe to Brady, Montana to Young very often.

You normally go through a decade of searching or more. BRADSHAW retired in 83.... we got a speed bump in Odonnell in 94,95.... then Ben in 2004.

We went 21 years between true franchise QBs. We won games along the way and even went to a Bowl.

You really don't just replace greatness very often.

BEN is special. And even at 50% .of what he was he is still better than what's behind him at 100%.
