Mason can throw the ball further than anyone else on the team but that doesn't mean he has the strongest arm. His deep passes are sky high floaters that go a long way but with not much velocity. For instance in HS I had a cousin who could throw a baseball 92 MPH which was 10 more MPH than I could throw but standing in the outfield I could throw the ball a lot further than he could towards home plate.

I was going to read the 3 pages of this thread and weigh in on the Steelers timeless backup QB debate, then decided life's too short.

Occam's razor tells us all things being equal the simplest answer is most often the correct one.

So the trade deadline came and went, several teams had need of QB help and MR is still a Steeler so that means no one wanted him.

The reality is no one knows what truly went on before MR resigned with the Steelers and what has gone on this season with him besides Mason, his agent and the Steelers. It's possible there were inquiries made, it's possible that there weren't. A lot of situations out there that are worse than being 3rd string QB for the Steelers and collecting a check.

It's just way easier to say he sucks and 31 teams didn't want him because it fits.

Agreed, and as a black man, I don't think the incident has anything to do with MR's situation. Folks just don't think he's a good QB, plain and simple.

I don’t think Trubisky was brought in to compete with Rudolph. I think he was brought in so they wouldn’t get stuck having to play Rudolph because they knew he wasn’t capable of being an NFL starter.

It is also far more likely given the available evidence.

I don’t even know that it’s fair to say he can throw it further than anyone on the team, but he does throw the deep ball down the sideline with the best touch and timing on the team. That’s his power. His college and pro tape show what he can and can’t do for those who care to go back and watch. In college he lived on deep balls, bubble/tunnel screens and fades to guys like JW and Marcel Ateman who beat up Big 12 corners.

But similar to your example, I used to be able to throw a college regulation ball 50+ yards with ease, but I didn’t have the arm strength to throw an NFL deep out without being picked or putting my receiver in the hospital. Velocity on mid range passes takes more arm strength than deep lobs.

I think everyone has seen Mason Rudolph’s ceiling and at most he might win 1 game out of three at the back up position if he is needed in such a 3 game stretch. That’s just my opinion and I think GMs are looking for something more. Here’s the problem that the Steelers dealt themselves though. If Pickett goes down, I want Mason as the back up over Trubisky. That’s how bad our QB situation has become.

Kurt Warner, and James Harrison say hello, and for Me to tell You Gms don't always make great choices. T. Edmunds who is now on his 2nd team since we finally let him go says hello also. Both sides of the coin show You GMs aren't full proof. Also wouldn't be any 1st round bust if they were. Think about that.

I'm not buying it that Rudolph is being blackballed, the NFL investigated Garrett's claim and found no evidence it was true, on SNR they said the Steelers like Trubisky more than Mason because he's more mobile.

Yeah like they touted his athletic ability during the broadcast and then he proceed to hang in the pocket until the Jags used him for a hogpile.

I think he should go to the USFL/XFL and garner reps that way and find himself back on an NFL roster.

Not sure "sucks" is the term I'd use for MR performance but get I what you're saying. What I do think is if any of this MR theory was even remotely possible, do you actually think you'd be seeing it on this message board for the first time with as many sports writers out there covering just about any possible topic worth, or not worth, a crap? I believe this was pre Garrett incident and while Mason's performance wasn't the best it was average and looked better in this game than some stinkers that Mitch has let go. I wasn't a huge Fichtner fan but his schemes at least had open receivers and attacked the seam with TE's

My god, some people are overthinking this. He's just not very good.

It's not like the aversion league GM's have, and have had, for his talents is anything new either. He was thought to be a possible late first round pick, more likely a second. Ended up mid third.

Any time he's thrown a deep out you instantly see why. It always looks a beat late. His accuracy is awful. He rarely makes a throw that puts a receiver in good position to make yards after the catch. They're constantly reaching behind or down to catch the ball. (The one exception was when he hit JuJu in stride against the Niners, iirc)

For those who think Rudolph “sucks”, watch these highlights and others. You see him climbing the pocket, throwing on the run, hitting receivers in stride. He certainly doesn’t “suck” and he’s good enough to be a quality backup somewhere. He outplayed Jared Goff in this game.

One other point. Who in their right mind trusts Mike Tomlin and his staff to develop a young quarterback? They’re screwing Pickett’s young career up already and who’s to say that Rudolph could not have developed more adequately had he not had the misfortune of playing quarterback on a team that doesn’t have the coaching staff in place to help develop a young signal caller.

I stopped reading at idiots. Once you decide to proceed with the petty name calling everything you say after that is totally invalidated. Learn to debate and discuss your point without the childish monikers. You’ll be taken a lot more seriously that way.

The 1st 2 I named No NFL teams wanted them either. The others were players that teams thought they wanted, and proved they weren't worth it. So all in all showing GMs make huge mistakes all the time

That's kinda what I was getting at. Everyone assumes that he didn't get traded because he sucks(by Everyone I mean a generalization) but there is just no way to know. Maybe he could go on to be the next Warner but we won't know that this season.

Great job Mason. We saw more tonight from our QB situation than we have seen all year. Keep him in the rest of the year.
