I don't want to hear the rookie argument, I'm sick of seeing this guy get man handled and bull rushed and completely miss blocks. I hope the FO watches game tape because he gets beat or misses his block 3 times for every good play. Rookie or not his play is poor, period.

Hold the phone! I would look at his total body of work before I label him a bust. He was in college last year. Even Pouncey had a stupid holding penalty and got pull rushed back. I guess he's a bust too...

Yeah, I'm not ready to label him a bust. I think he will be much better next year if he keeps working hard.

He is not a bust...EVERY linemen on the team has gotten beat by a pass rusher multiple times this year. It happens to every linemen on every team. Gilbert is a solid player (and in reality turning into one of the better linemen on the team) and will only get better. You're a complete moron to call him or ANY player at this point in their careers a bust.

Exactly. Hard to call anyone a bust when he starts 15 games as a rookie. While the options were limited, I still think he's a quality player and will be with us for many years playing good ball.

Spoken like someone who never played on the line on either side of the ball.

I will still use the rookie argument, because rookies are not supposed to play much in the traditional Steelers system. Too early to tell.

Now, this is an apples and oranges comparison, because sometimes it does take time. Tunch Ilkin is rightly considered one of the Steelers great all time linemen, but let me tell you this- had there been a board like this back around 1983 or so, he'd be getting ripped worse than Gilbert. Unfortunately, it's hard to be patient.

Keepers on the oline....starks, pouncey and gilbert. legursky just as the backup center. everyone else backups at best.

How was Terry Bradshaw as a rookie?

Not only is the rookie argument extremely valid, but he's not even that bad! Most of the sacks he's allowed over the year are bad luck/on the quarterback. i.e., he pushes his guy past the pocket, and Ben has run out of that pocket to the other side and Gilbert's guy has a free run at him. Today, he did in fact get bullrushed by Sheard, but then Ben ran right into Sheard. If he'd stepped up in the pocket or run to the other side, the block would have been crappy but still effective enough. I don't think he's been performing "below the line" like some guys. I think if he has a problem, it's lack of chemistry with Ben along with his lack of overall experience. He is athletic. And he's better than Jon Scott on every level, including the push he gets in the run game. He can also play the left side, as well as both guard positions.

When Colon comes back next year, we'll have a good problem to solve and our line might finally have more good players than bad players. If we land a top-tier OG in the draft, we'll be a serious force up front.

Owned by former Pitt (Go Pitt) standout Jabaal Sheard Who I believe
was a 2nd round choice for the Cleveland Browns. This people is why
we will struggle in the playoffs against teams that can generate a pass rush.
    OUR OL is HORRENDOUS.

Know, that was a good one, Gunnery Sgt Hartman's comment. Thats exactly what he needs to do choke himself for making a stupid comment like that.

I'll tell you what the problem is, this is the NFL and Gilbert is a rookie who played college ball last year. He is not a bust and will be a good lineman for years to come with the Steelers. He has only just begun. He will get better and be a stable on the line. I think he was a good draft pick and the coaching staff likes him. He will be all right.

If you never played the game, especially on the line, how can you make silly comments?

Yes, he is young, yes, he is still learning but watching every game on tape he isn't good by any means and I hate when this team keeps guys like this around for 5 and 6 years, this is why the QB gets beat up so bad. I did play until I had my back broke Gunny, 17 sacks as a DE in high school in 10 games and 66 pancakes in 2 seasons as a LT also so don't tell me I never played, you midget time doesn't count. Gilbert isn't even serviceable, watch the foot work, my god in 3 games this season he has tripped himself...3 games for crying out loud! How many o-linemen, tackles especially, trip themselves and to have it happen more than once. Go ahead, bust on me, maybe I shouldn't get mad at plays like that. Maybe I would like to see the Steeler do something in the playoffs and maybe I'd like to see some good draft picks for the o-line, at least something to keep the QB up straight. Maybe I should say..ok he is ok and he will get better, Charlie Batch can get us over the top when BB gets killed, and when BA is done and the same crap happens I can yell with the rest of you about how bad the OC is at designing plays, maybe he should design a play in which the OTs aren't needed and we can use WR instead. I watch and listen all the time to fire BA, at the same time we can say a player that trips over his own feet and gets bull rushed at least twice a game by defensers 100 pounds lighter and completely whiffs on blocks, is getting better at the end of the season. Yep, my bad, he really is after all a rookie and he'll get better and if he doesn't we'll just get a new QB, no problem.
