Malcom Butler in Black and Gold?

I remember when the Pats started slow a few years back and got smashed by KC on national television. All the talking heads claimed that was the end of the Pats dynasty. The Pats went on to win the SB that year, if I'm not mistaken. I don't know how anyone can say the Pats are done when they just went to 3 SB's in a row. The Pats won't be done until Brady leaves, and even then, Belichek has shown he can get the most out of a backup QB. When Belichek leaves, that's when it will finally be over.

 

I'm not surprised it was related to discipline. Belichek has shown a willingness to bench pretty much anyone. Of course he's not going to bench Brady, he's not going to cut off his nose just to spite his face, but Butler hadn't looked good lately anyway, so I'm sure he felt he wasn't losing much by sitting him. Nobody will ever know if it made a difference or not, but it's amazing that guys can't follow team rules right before the SB. I did find it funny that Browner is complaining that other guys have broke team rules and got a second chance. I'm going to try that next time I get stopped for speeding, "but officer, other people are speeding too, this isn't fair."

 

I'm not advocating going after Butler; I would need to know more about what happened. But I do agree our ILB unit is horrid without Shazier in there, and Dupree is pretty poor for a 1st round pick at OLB (although I won't label him JJ 2.0, as no one is that terrible). But claiming our DE's are overpaid stiffs isn't something I can go with; Heyward had a Pro Bowl season and Tuitt played with one arm all season. Not to mention, we do not have a stud at NT, making the DE's job much tougher.

 

Heyward had a good year, but he disappeared when when the Steelers needed him the most. All of the Pro Bowl/All Pro Steelers players on offense eventually showed up for the Jax game. Heyward didn't do much of anything vs. Jaguars and it's unacceptable. IMO, the DEs.. Heyward and Tuitt are not living up to their billing. Is Hargrave that bad? I don't think so.

 

If we get a chance to sign Malcom Butler we should do the following...

• Sit him down and have a "Come to Jesus" moment with him. Tell him whatever got him benched before the Super Bowl better not happen here OR ELSE

• Do not, I repeat, DO NOT overpay for him. His salary should be market rate, not break the bank

• Motivate him with revenge, let him stick it to his former team and Bill Belichick

The major need in the backfield is a Free Safety starter and both safety back ups. We are in decent shape with the corners that we have under contract sans Gay. With the exit of Lake hopefully the new position coach comes in and improves this group top to bottom, something Lake could not do.

The parade of lets sign every free agent has begun, which friends just will not happen. Especially if your on the sign Bell long term wagon.
