Could start could be a backup...we shall see. If this was Okung, I'm sure he would be the starter, but this one could go both ways.

Agreed. Are we hypnotizing these players to get them to accept reasonable deals?

I think they still start AV and use Harris for depth at both tackle spots. Good signing as I have no faith in Mike Adams. Very team friendly deal too.

I read somewhere that he only allowed 3 sacks last year...so that isn't too bad.

As far as Adams...I wonder if this means this could be the end for him or they keep him this year (mainly inactive or something). I guess we'll see later this year.

This move all but eliminates Adams. Harris has started at both T spots in the NFL. I still think AV is our LT though.

I would say that it's for Beachem and Mike Adams. Good to have Al V around though. I think he could be a future starter or even the starter this year, with a little more polish. This is a cheap deal for the Steelers for a starter or even a good back up.

Here's what Walterfootball had to say about the signing:

[IMG] Steelers sign RB Ryan Harris (2 years, $3.9 million): C+ Grade
The Steelers were evidently in the Russell Okung sweepstakes, but they've reportedly dropped out in the wake of signing Ryan Harris, which is pretty confusing. Harris was brought on to be a reserve, so why would he have an impact on any effort to sign Okung?

If this is true, Pittsburgh will go into the season with Alejandro Villanueva as the starting left tackle, which sounds like a disaster waiting to happen. Villanueva struggled in relief of Kelvin Beachum last year, while Harris was even worse when shielding Peyton Manning's blind side. The two will struggle to block for Ben Roethlisberger, who has to be praying that his front office will use an early draft choice on a tackle.

As for this signing itself, it's not terrible. Harris has plenty of experience, so he could provide somewhat decent depth. There were better or cheaper options out there, but Pittsburgh could've done worse than Harris at less than $2 million per season.

Boy they make it sound like AV was a turnstile for us at LT. I think we're fine.

Harris penalty per snap numbers are unheralded positives... but the reality is that he is a good run blocker, and well versed in a zone system... but he leaves a LOT to be desired as an edge pass blocker.

It seems that the intent today is for an open competition in camp for the LT spot.

    OR

i wonder if they'll try Gilbert at LT? Harris has extensive experience on the Right side...

    Per Rotoworld:

Steelers signed OT Ryan Harris, formerly of the Broncos, to a two-year, $3.9 million contract.

Harris' addition means the Steelers probably expect Kelvin Beachum to walk in free agency. Harris made 13 starts on Peyton Manning's blindside last season, but was far from effective. Now 31, he'll join Alejandro Villanueva as an option on Pittsburgh's left side. Marcus Gilbert will probably remain at right tackle. All that being said, Harris' money is not imposing enough to consider Beachum's departure a sure thing.

Ben's blind side still doesn't look too solid.

It's the excellent value part I don't always agree with. But, man, I love the contracts given to Green, Gay, Bey, Harris, Foster, and Golden so far. Really like what we have pre-draft, even considering Bryant's mess.

Thats a piss poor review of AV. Sure, they gave him help but he did well for being thrown into the fire like he was. He should only get better. His work ethic is second to none and he has the measurable's to be a very good LT.

I totally disagree with their view on AV. Like I'm a little angry about it.
