I would actually like to keep Gay unless we plan on spending a 2nd round pick or so on a CB. He knows our defense and drastically improved from '10 to '11. He still gets beat from time to time but he also has shown he can make plays and he is becoming a decent tackler. I have never been very high on Keenan Lewis, he just seems dumb to me... and I simply do not know enough about the guys waiting in the wings. Even if we do bring Gay back I wouldn't mind trying to get Alfonzo Dennard or someone like that if they are there in the 2nd.

This is the thing, isn't is? I suppose the response is, well, anybody's better than Gay... but it's difficult to tell. I would hope at least one of the younger corners blossoms in camp.

Brocos recently signed Tracey Porter so not sure if they would sign another.

You guys chill on Gay. He made a few big game saving plays for us. 2010 sucked but before that and 2011 he was a good solid guy

I don't care how good he is now, he can't make up for all the bad memories

A few good plays doesn't make up for the few hundred he got burnt on. When you have analysts saying everybody picks on Gay, that has to tell you something. 1 half descent year against garbage teams doesn't convince me he turned the corner, if he stays and does well then I'll say he belongs. Troy can't be Troy ( as in blitzing he has to stay back) with Gay on the corner, so Gay is hurting the team.

Guess where he ended up?! Shocker!

    Cardinals signed CB William Gay.
Like Tashard Choice, Gay broke the news himself on Twitter. Gay takes the roster spot of CB Richard Marshall, and gives the Cardinals insurance on CB Greg Toler as he completes his recovery from a torn ACL. With Patrick Peterson and A.J. Jefferson both in house to go along with Toler, Gay could begin the year as low as fourth on the depth chart, but could also see time at safety. Marshall played both corner and safety in 2011, and Pittsburgh was mulling re-signing Gay as a safety before letting him walk. Going by opposing quarterback completion percentage, Gay was one of the league's poorer starting corners in 2011. Mar 25 - 10:22 AM

Well, this isn't a big loss, but it is a loss. I have always maintained that Gay is an effective player if used correctly. The correct way to use him is as a 3rd or 4th (preferably 4th) corner. He's not good enough to be an every down starter, but he is a good guy to have for nickel/dime situations, and as a cost-effective spot starter if someone gets hurt. Good luck in Arizona Willie - where former Steelers go to fade on into the sunset of their careers.

If losing Gay means signing Wallace: great.

Gay played well every other year. This would be a bad year.

A corner now needs drafted or signed as a FA.

I think this puts C Allen at nickel and Brown at first back up to Lewis and Taylor. Brown may start over Lewis.

So who is the starter next year. We have lewis who hasnt been able to take the stRting job from gay and two unproven players who barely seen the field last year.

    Sounds good to me!

Lewis has some experience and finally performed on the field last year (not all the time, but at least showed he's not a total loss). The other two have more potential. Let all three of them fight for spots #2-4 and let the chips fall where they may.

I read a puzzling headline regarding Gay. Something like "Steelers in running for Gay". Shouldn't it be more like "Gay in running to remain a Steeler". (?)

While I'm not sold on Lewis yet, we have to be careful with judging his ability just on whether he beat out Gay for the starting role. The Steelers aren't exactly known for moving aside older players as soon as a youngster shows a flash of talent.

One thing's for sure, camp is going to be interesting at this position. CB and RB could both see a bit of re-jigging in the depth chart.

No steelers said they wanted him back. I really think allen is going to be the guy. He is big and physicaland brown seems to be a better slot man. Too bad its not madden i kill people on nickle blitzes with brown.

    Steelers Depot reporting on Twitter:

Loss of Gay now most likely will result in a 6th or 7th round compensatory pick in 2013. Could be higher the more he plays.

If it is true...its definitely a loss and a new hole that will need filled. Not necessarily the #2 CB spot but a CB to take his spot nonetheless (just like BMacs spot if they keep 6 CBS again). Wonder if Warren is still around from last year...he played well enough to earn a spot.

Warren is currently on a reserve/futures contract with the Chicago Bears.
