I know this has been discussed before here but I'm bringing it up again. I get a sick feeling in my stomach when I think about the day Ben retires. It could be after this season, nobody knows. We all know that without great QB a team pretty much is going nowhere. Do you think the Steelers front office is doing enough to prepare for Ben's departure? We all agree that Landry is not the answer. Unless we get real lucky in the draft we could have some lean years ahead. After the lean years in the eighties and the disappointments in the nineties, these last years with Ben has been pretty great.

Im not dreading it as much as I thought I would. Kind of excited about finding the next franchise QB.

I'm done with the gun slinger type. Yes, the exciting big plays generated by that style of QB is fun to watch but the inconsistency can be maddening.

I'm also not expecting to fall back into the 80's but rather the 90's. I think we'll remain competitive while we look for our next signal caller. So maybe thats why Im not that apprehensive about it.

With the talent on the team now, I think that Ben plays out his contract. Hopefully considers year to year after that.

Or worse yet, life after Breaking Bad.

PS - There was no "life" after Bradshaw until 2004.

Let's hope Ben plays smart and get's adequate protection to continue his final yahoo. The front five needs to prioritize their role. Have already seen slackness in this area. Team needs to keep the pedal to the metal. Currently their are no competent qb's either on the bench or behind the clipboard. The hereafter is a concern and if BR would suddenly go down. I sure hope management has their binoculars in hand.

The way he is playing now with the hail marys..and getting sacked again because of it ..who cares he can retire now. He doesn't check down and see the open receivers..if the play is to throw deep even if the receiver is in triple coverage ..the meat head still throws it.

We did make the playoffs in half of the seasons between Bradshaw and Ben... so maybe not completely lifeless.

We'll be lucky in Bens replacement takes less than a decade to find.

Compare that to the Browns' seasons since late 80's, and Steelers 80's-90's were practically the golden years.

Let's just hope they don't fall into the "Rooney funk" where they try to prove everyone wrong, like they did from the 80's until 2004. They refused to give the QB position the proper priority it deserved, with Cowher saying things like "We are fine at the QB position" as they made as suffer through the Kordell's, Brister's and Tomczak's of the world. Next year's draft is full of potential franchise QBs...it may be the time to take a shot.

Not looking forward to the day but I think this team is more equipped than ever with a great O line and a Defense on the rise.....Ben is making a boatload of money so I wouldn't rule out having the flexibility of a QB on the rise in free agency....I know it's not our style but this will be a team built to win now....

Dan wanted to draft Marino. He got out voted and they went with Rivera instead. Which, would have been an excellent pick if not for a tragic accident. Still, obviously Marino was the pick to make but it wasn't Rooney in a funk trying to prove everyone wrong.

And if you look at the drafts when Cowher was here, the only person that may have been worth taking before 2004 was Chad Pennington.

Incidentally, Rooney was the reason they drafted Ben.

i really just hope he doesnt become the next Favre by putting a strangle hold on the team every year while the front office waits for a decision going into July.
If he starts doing that then they just need to move on and Draft the next guys.
If there comes a year where he does not know if he is retiring or not by the time the draft rolls around they need to look elsewhere.
I couldnt stand it when Favre did it, and i will not be a hypocrite if Ben does it eventhough i love the guy.

Looking forward towards a better future myself personally.

Onwards and upwards life must go. There are no exceptions; team based professonial sports franchises or otherwise. I, along with many, will likely be sad to see Big Ben go. However, akin to the clock, the clock will strike 12 for all of us; sports based, life based or otherwise.

So long as the Steelers remain competitive by reaching the playoffs, I am good. Of course, more Super Bowl victories is the main reason why I will be watching soon after Ben retires but that will not be the only reason.

So many unanswered questions in an unknown future? I am looking forward to it. Cannot wait to see what the "next one" is.

I can say this though. Before that time comes rocketdog, let me, you and the rest of SteelersNation enjoy the time we have left watching him if we truly want to honor his impact and legacy; his wishes to be admired long after hia retirement no less.

I am sure that is what he would want second only to other ring or two if possible. :smiley1:

I just want to enjoy this season...

Of course we all would like to see Ben stay a few more years. I don't think it will happen. If they win #7 he will be gone, riding off like Bettis. If they lose he might not have the internal fire to continue. He has already cemented a trip to Canton.

Short term, there will be pain.

But we'll get past it. We easily, for a few plays here or there, could have won or at least played in a few SBs prior to Ben.

Besides, Ben has been compared rightly or wrongly his whole career to Favre. He'll be compared in another way: retirement talk for YEARS. ;)

There's no chance Ben holds this franchise hostage ala Favre in GB.
