I think it will be a good QB camp for the competition if it remains to be Trubisky, Rudolph and Haskins. If they acquire another QB via draft or trade then Rudolph probably gets his traded papers and will find himself on another team.

In his 10 starts as an NFL QB he is 5-4-1, 61.5 Completion % and an 80.9 QBR but he has hardly been given full support during his time on our team. It was obvious from the very beginning that Ben never really mentored him and often worked more with Dobbs than he did Mason.

Looking back at his college career he was very effective.

    2015 Second Team Academic All-Big 12
    2015 Offensive Team MVP
    2016 Offensive Team MVP
    2016 Davey O’Brien Award Semifinalist
    2016 Johnny Unitas Award Semifinalist
2017 Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award Winner
2017 FCA Bobby Bowden Award Winner
    2017 Sammy Baugh Award Winner
    2017 Davey O’Brien Award Finalist
    2017 Second-Team All-America (AFCA)
    2017 Third-Team All-America (Associated Press)
2017 Jason Witten College Man of the Year Finalist
    2017 Manning Award Finalist
    2017 Second-Team All-Big 12 (Coaches)
    2017 Maxwell Award Semifinalist
    2017 Walter Camp Award Semifinalist
    2017 Camping World Bowl MVP

    In 2017 he was 318 of 489 with 47 TD's (37 Passing and 10 Rushing) with just 9 INT's. Not too shabby.

All I know is there is not really a full resume out there to completely write him off just yet. In other words I personally don't think he has reached his ceiling in the NFL. I'm not really convinced that he will be nothing more than a career back up in the NFL.

I hear a lot of doubt from fans around here and I have even had some of my own in the past but I do believe we have not seen the best of Mason.

Go ahead and critique away if you must.

May the best QB win in preseason. If Rudolph beats Trubisky and Haskins for starting job....so be it.

With that said....if Steelers draft one of the slacker QBs in this draft....I'll- :puking2:

Watching him. It goes back to his OSU days. His offense was built on screens, deep balls and fades to Washington and Marcel Ateman. He accumulated a lot of his stats on receivers winning 50/50 balls. JW even got a nickname “70/30” or something to that effect because he won so many contested catches in college. When I watched him at OSU his repertoire did not include much over the middle, no outs that required zip and very little in the way of crossing routes. He was very good at what he was asked to do, but he did not show that he can make the full suite of NFL throws. To me that has continued in the NFL. I think many were encouraged by his game vs the Browns in Week 17 of 2020, but all that he really did in that game was throw a few deep balls that our guys went up and got. Most of his throws were dinks and dunks. He played well, but not good enough to be a regular starter. If you disagree, go back and watch some of his games in both college and the pros. His passing repertoire is too limited IMO.

I just don’t see the killer look in his eyes when he plays

He still looks like a scared rookie

Maybe with Ben gone he can relax and play

    I've seen him play....
After the season when he rotated with the Duck, he looks scared and hesitant. Can't really blame him after getting whacked with his own helmet!

I watched Him play in college also, and couldn't believe People rated Baker so much Higher than him. I thought We should have given Him a chance. Also nobody, and I mean nobody can talk about His deep ball with a straight face , and say they have more confidence in Trubisky. Talk about limted throwing repertoire. Really any of the Qbs they are interested in the draft are very limited in passing repertoire.
I thought thats what everyone wanted....as long as You can take off running. LoL

I don't think he ever recovered from the hit he took in the Baltimore game. When he came back he looked scarred in the pocket; Never wanting to step into his passes.

Last year I was all set to get on the Mason / Canada bandwagon and then Ben returned. His 1 start against the Lions last year got me off that bandwagon for good.

Trubisky's deep ball was way off in that game when he threw for 6 tds. Mason is the back up because of unforced errors. If he can go through a game without a play where he shakes his head and says "my bad" I would be thrilled. High floaters are not my idea of a starting qb

I am open to riding w Trubisky as the starter, Mason as back up and Haskins (translation: not drafting a qb this year)

I'll believe he's bad when a competent OC says so.

Questionable pocket presence and awareness. Very inconsistent throwing the ball up to this point in his career. Based on what I have seen so far i feel like Mason's upside is that of a career backup QB, but never a starter. He is good enough to win you a game or two if you need him, but if hes your guy you aren't going anywhere.

I have no doubt Trubisky will be the guy. I am not buying that there will even be a legit competition.

Unfortunately, Mason’s career so far has been defined by this…

    439D8A8B-EB74-44E4-B1D2-87F6EB462106.jpeg 555CB09F-3B3F-4ECC-AC5A-69A64240BCCD.jpeg

I have really rooted for the guy and had high hopes for him. But he just doesn’t seem to have that “IT” factor. I don’t know if he tries to be too perfect or what, but he comes across as a little bit stiff and forced instead of natural and fluid. He seems like a great guy. I hope he can turn it around, if not in Pittsburgh, somewhere else.

He had a total of 9 td passes in 15 games before that torching of the mighty (5 - 10)Tampa Bay. LoL. Here are your huge 6 TD passes....14 yards, 39 yard, 9 yard, 20 yard, 3 yard ,and 3 yards. The Man averaged 31st passing yards a game , and 30th in air yards a game in His career. Wow!!!
With all that said I truly, Honestly....promise You I hope He's freaking beyond great....all the way into the Awesome category.

I can understand that..it was the lions after all. A back up Qb is a thankless job. You are called upon in an instant and have to go. MR was given no game prep, and played with an O that did little all year. Im.not sold he will be any more than a career back up, and Qbs worse than him have left this league with pretty huge career earnings. Hell Blaine Gabbert was TB back up, that should inspire MR to some higher ceiling

Every time I see that second picture of Rudolph I think he's a spitting image of John Travolta. LOL. Maybe that's why he has such a gorgeous wife.:hehehe:

When Tim Benz referenced The Great Gazoo in regards to the 2nd picture, I gotta be honest, I almost pissed myself.

Question, when has a guy come in as a 5th year QB and suddenly been the MAN? After showing almost nothing. Think about it, I'll wait.

Well Cliff Stoudt earned an NFL pension while sitting on the bench his first 4 years, then when he would have been the next great Steeler QB he broke his wrist hitting a strength test machine at a bar, enter Mark Malone. BTW someone said one time we did not draft Marino because we had young QBs already . Why draft someone, we have young Qbs already! History repeats itself. This was supposed to be in green..I'm as pathetic as Stoudt!

Might not have to worry about Pittsburgh even getting the chance good sir! :drinks:

Why?! Expect a trading frenzy within the literal first 10 mins of the draft. No seriously..... expect it to happen. Detroit is the ring leader in all of this as they will be listening to multiple offers to nab more picks, add more talent this season and likely acquire another 1st for next season to grab one of the big guns in 2023. New York and New Orlenas are prime targets to bite at that shot; Carolina not out of the running either. Do not discount the likes of the Commanders either.

Should all go well, who knows?! Jordan Davis or Kyle Hamilton could still be on the board by pick 10; more so Hamilton than Davis but I digress. I still want Jordan Davis above all else but Kyle Hamilton is by NO MEANS a bad consolation prize.

Kurt Warner didn't make an NFL (regular-season) roster until his 5th year, as a 3rd-string QB.
After a 4 for 11, 39 yard performance in garbage time in the last game of the 1998 season, he became the starter in 1999 after Trent Green was injured in the preseason.

I think at least a part of the doubt was his first start.
The Steelers lost to SF, and quite a few fans complained about losing to a team that went 4-12 the previous season.

Didn't matter that SF eventually went 13-3 and played in the SB.
The initial idea of "Mason lost to a bad team" had already taken root, and initial impressions are hard to change.

Does it have to be his 5th year?

Steve Young did not become the 49ers starting QB until his 8th year in the league.

I don't care what someone does in college. When they transition to the NFL they can be a totally different QB. Maybe 20% of these QB that made it in the nfl do I know from college.

In the NFL games I watched Rudolph in, he's like a deer in head lights, and overly cautious. Which resulted in bad plays eventually.

Mason had his chance to play and show us he's worthy. But he's only shown me he's worthy of being #3.

Also I'm not a fan of this draft class. Pickett is the only starter. And the rest need to sit on the bench a year or two to learn...... Next year draft class will be impressive.

I hope the best for Mitchell and think he will impress us. But I am really excited for the team we are building. I hope we continue to build that team in this draft, next free agency and next draft. With selecting a QB in round one next year and then letting Rudolph go.

Our own #12 took time to develop. And even had his first Superbowl as the reason we didn't make the playoffs.

But Terry showed signs of being great. While Mason I couldn't make a highlight of ten NFL throws his entire career.
