I've always tried to give him the benefit of the doubt, but I can't anymore.

He is 51. He's not going to retire.

Cowher was 49 when he retired, so it's not impossible to say this. I think he takes a few years away from coaching and comes back similar to Sean Peyton.

I should have put quotes around “retire.” I simply mean that he could move on and do whatever’s next. He has options galore. The organization is not likely to make the tough decision that needs to be made.

    Similar.

Partly because I found a lot of the arguments against Tomlin weren’t very good, tended to oversimplify everything massively and pin the blame on him for absolutely everything.

So I’ve been reluctant to jump on that wagon. Now, though, it’s clear that a shake up in coordinators and overall team philosophy is needed. That means a new HC

I've never really been on board with the FMTN crowd. But after seeing the last 3 games, it's clear his message is lost. This team is lost. It's time to move on.

    (aka 'Go')

Glad to see you now agree all of those argument which you deemed simplistic, were all true and you should have just accepted them.

Occam's razor is always the case.

It’s time for him to move on to his life’s work as Chuck Noll used to say. Noll had a shelf life. Cowher had a shelf life, and Tomlin has had a shelf life and he’s past his expiration date. It would make zero sense for Rooney to retain him if he isn’t going to extend him. He’ll have an all new coaching staff and will not, in all likelihood, have much say on who the new OC, DC, STC and other assistants may be. It may be harder to recruit quality assistants if they feel that Tomlin could be a lame duck coach. It’s just time. But the smug and arrogant Rooney will just keep doing things “the Steeler way” I’m sure and is more likely to extend Tomlin than to let him go.

Tomlin's shelf life is the same as Barry Switzer's shelf life. Tomlin should have been gone after the 2010 SB win.

Tomlin is just the GOAT Switzer in having milked the Rooney's for 100M+, and having sucked for so long.

Cowher's situation was different. His wife died not long after he retired.

Switzer took over a better team, a dynasty in its final run. He had no part in building that team. The Steelers were a .500 team with issues after 2006. Roethlisberger had to bounce back from a nightmarish season. They had to develop new edge rushers with Hagans and Porter gone. This idea that Tomlin did nothing to lead them to a Super Bowl victory in 2008 and another appearance in 2010 was always ignorant and inaccurate.

Tomlin is a very good coach, but either the game has passed him by or it is just time to start somewhere else. Both are true.
