Was just watching the NFL Network live draft.

They ended up picking Davis for the Raiders, but Ike Taylor pretty much said that his sources in the Steelers War Room love Jarrad Davis and see him as a Steeler.

I don't think this is a surprise as it seems like the Steelers have met with Davis as many times as possible.

I personally would hate the pick. He would be an ILB. To me he is more of a cover LB. Yes it would give us 2 incredibly athletic ILBs but I just don't know if I see it as a top priority.

I like Davis but have him early middle 2nd rd. I like him more than Cunningham. He hits like a mike or Buck but can move close to a wil or Mack ....

ILB is a much more serious need than most of us think with the way the NFL offenses are evolving. I don't want him in the 1st but seriously consider it in the 2nd....

Crazy 1st two picks ..... TE Njoku 1st rd & ILB Davis 2nd rd... Fans would go crazy but this actually could happen and would strengthen our team....

I'd like Davis at 30. I'd be shocked (and really happy) if he made it to us in the second. I prefer a couple other players, but I think he'd be really good for us.

I agree that ILB is a much more serious need that most people think. Having two guys as athletic as Davis and Shazier would be great for the defense.

I'd be less than pleased if we took Njoku... I don't see it with him. A man without a position. He can't play TE because he is completely unable to block and is a touch too slow and not explosive enough to be a WR, not to mention the route running. Idk that's just me tho

It's weird that Ike would say something like that. I doubt the Steelers would tip their hand too much even to Swaggin since he is a member of the media now. Who knows. Everything about the draft is a huge strategy game. I'll take it with a grain of salt for now

I'd be ok with Davis if we were trying to replace Shazier, but not to replace Timmons. There's no doubt that Davis is good in coverage, and can fly around the field making tackles if he's unblocked, but he really struggles agaianst the run if the offense accounts for him. Skill position players routinely block him, and linemen engulf him. I've watched quite a bit of both him and Peppers, and to me Peppers at 213 lbs. does a better job getting off of blocks than Davis. I also see Davis give up yards after contact in the run game with too much frequency to be a Buck in our system. He doesn't play with much power. IMO he needs to be on the weak side in a 4-3 or 3-4, or in the middle of a 4-3 with 2 interior linemen protecting him.

I like what he'd bring to our downfield coverage in base defense, but I don't like him at the Buck against the run. I'm not seeing the value at #30 with some of the edge and DB talent that will be available.

Edit: I just thought of the guy Davis reminds me of - Jonathan Vilma. I remember that Vilma was a very solid, but undersized Mike who excelled with a 4 man front (and 2 big interior guys in front of him), but was awful in a 3-4 because he couldn't engage a blocker to save his life.

If we are trying to replace Timmons, I actually think Zack Cunningham is the better fit.

Still, I think @ #30, we have to go OLB, S or CB.

I think neither are as good as keeping Williams at the Buck and replacing him with a 3rd safety (a good one, not Golden) in passing situations.

We need an ILB... Cunningham first or Awuzie if Cunningham is gone in the 20's..

Timmons is gone.. We have a big hole at ILB...

Jarvis did not make a big hole in the OLB scene....

Gay is slowing down.. He is a problem...

I think the way I come at this is we can have the 2 most athletic ILBs in the NFL, I just don't see how it helps us beat the Patriots. Brady will always find a hole in the defense.

Best way to beat the Patriots is to put Brady on his butt. And outside of playing the Patriots I would still rather fix our secondary.

KIMO VON OELHOFFEN one shot good bye tom tom.

davis would be a big disappointment as the pick to me.

SE, peppers gets engulfed too, way too much for my liking.

jordan evans or samson ebukam later if we want an ILB that can cover well with some speed. i will say vince williams looked a lot faster and better in coverage last year than prior years too.

big fast burner safety or OLB for me. :smiley1::cool:

Brady gets the ball out 80% of the time before the OLB's even see the back field.. 2 yard cross routes through the ILB's zone is the killer play for them... Then add in Gronk who didn't play us and we need a Safety/ILB for that job... or an Awuzie type CB that covers and hits off the LOS for the TE's. Pic routes and short cross routes are their killer plays.

cam back and an addition to the pass rush helps the front end. safety and corner help keeps the ILB'ers from having to drop as deep in coverage on the back end. big fast active good tackling safeties with the play in front of them would work wonders with man coverage by a couple of corners. 3 safety sets. speed. coverage ability. allow shazier to cover less field deep.

Jarrad Davis may possibly be in play at 30.

If so, so be it. Pittsburgh's draft success since 1990 far exceeds any team in the league according to a study by the Washington Post.

Otherwise, someone like Marlon Humphrey or TJ Watt has to be in play. Do not count out Obi Melifonwu either.

We'd be in sub packages almost all day against the Pats anyway, and I'd prefer a good big nickel (I guess the term du jour is "hybrid") at #30 to an undersized ILB. If Davis were a legit Buck backer against the run in addition to his coverage skills, I'd be all for him at #30. However in my view he doesn't offer that much more against the run than Peppers or Obi do as big nickels, but they are both significantly faster than he is. He's a good football player, but in a 3-4 he's more a poor man's Shazier at the Mack than a true 3 down Buck LB in my view. The same goes for Cunningham.

I think we need additional ILB help, but I'm not seeing anyone with 1st round value for our specific need in this draft.

He wouldn't be my first, second, or even third pick but I would be satisfied with the pick. I really like the kid and it is a position of need.
