And won seven division titles with Tommy Maddox, Neil O'Donnell, Kordell Stewart, and Mike Tomczak. Cowher toiled most of his career during the era when the Steelers lost their best free agents and didn't sign or trade for big names of their own to backfill.

Constant talent drain and no franchise QB, but he still won. That's why he wears a gold jacket.

I learned about the face palm from Heinz.

Speaking of "She's" I found a few on the welcome forum but they never last.

Cowher liked those game managers as QB, if it wasn't for Dan Rooney he would've drafted Stacy Andrews over Ben , Cowher wasn't a good evaluator of QBs Jim Miller, Kent Graham .

So much wrong with this post that I'm just capturing it in a quote before you have a chance to edit it.

There was so much wrong in your post when you tried to claim a HC couldn't win a SB without a franchise QB, and I totally proved you wrong .

Who should Cowher have drafted at QB? Go look at all those drafts and where they drafted and list all the obvious HOF QBs he passed on.

And Rooney even said the SHAWN Andrews draft story was blown out of proportion, something storytellers and authors are wont to do.

Let me help. Not talking about QBs who everyone passed on and was picked later, the obvious pass of a high QB prospect for another position.

Steelers first round pick, next QB taken, pick number in parentheses:

    1992: Leon Searcy (11), Tommy Maddox (25)
1993: Deon Figures (23), Billy Joe Hobert (58)
    1994: Charles Johnson (17), Perry Klein (111)
    1995: Mark Bruener (27), Todd Collins (45)
    1996: Jamain Stephens (29), Tony Banks (42)
    1997: Chad Scott (24), Jim Druckenmiller (26)
    1998: Alan Faneca (28), Charlie Batch (60)
    1999: Tory Edwards (13), Shaun King (50)
    2000: Plax Burress (8), Chad Pennington (18)
    2001: Casey Hampton (19), Drew Brees (32)
    2002: Kendall Simmons (30), Patrick Ramsey (32)
    2003: Troy Polamalu (16), Kyle Boller (18)

Might have a slight case in 2001, but every team in the league passed on Brees, who was picked in the 2nd round.

Tomlin gets criticized when the team has a glaring weakness at a position, but Cowher should be praised for ignoring his team's weakness?
It doesn't have to be HoF players; just QBs who could have played better than O'Donnell (3rd round pick and a Noll player) et. al., and pushed the team over the top.

Cowher didn't have great QBs (before Ben). The point is he didn't make any effort to find one either.
Except for Ben (forced on him) and Slash (2nd round, drafted to be WR), he only spent 5th round picks and later on QBs.
When O'Donnell left, he had career back-up Tomczak (undrafted, in his 12th year and on his 4th team) as the starter.

If they didn't like the QBs available in round 2 or later, they could have tried a trade to get a QB.
(The Steelers decided to trade for a top RB (Bettis) instead of using draft picks.)
Or tried players who had success in other football leagues, like Kurt Warner or Doug Flutie, for basically nothing.

Again, show me the list. And Cowher wasn't the GM, and the Steelers were even less likely to dabble in free agency back then.

I'm sure you were screaming for the Steelers to sign Kurt Warner and Doug Flutie back then, too.

No answers, either? Who should Cowher have acquired?

Why didn't he simply go to the Franchise QB Store like every other team and upgrade his QB?

Cowher wasn't the GM, but all we hear from you fanboys is those were Cowher's players, like he put those teams together by himself .

Gruden won a Super Bowl with Tampa Bay in his first season, Brad Johnson was the starter not a franchise QB .

The topic at hand is "Cowher could have upgraded his QB".

Try to keep up and FFS find a new, less punchable emoji.

The point is that Cowher didn’t value the QB position enough to even somewhat compromise his defense. And in general, franchise quarterbacks weren’t nearly as highly prized back then.
