Lots of weapons if we have 2 TE sets.

NFL.com is reporting that it is a year to year deal, not sure I have ever heard that term used before?

I believe that was Albert Breer and I'm not really sure why he's saying it, because it's not what I would consider "truly a year to year deal".

Great signing! At worst he will be a steady, athletic TE who can put up some numbers. Similar to what Heath has been doing recently minus the great blocking. At best, Green utilizes his great athletic abilities and explodes within our offense.

I figured for my first post outside of the Fantasy Mock (available right at the top of your screen on the forums pages *cheap plug*) since the pre-season, why not start here.

If all is true (the deal/#'s) this is not a bad deal at all. With less than $5M guaranteed thats not bad at all, especially if things pan out like you hope they do with any FA signing. If not they could easily part with him for little dead money.

I think by this he might mean with very little guaranteed money (compared to what other TEs have gotten) they can easily cut him after any of the years and not be in the hole much. Almost viewing it as if its $5M per year deal instead of just the $1.25M plus whatever the guaranteed break down is per year.

Really? Wow! You must not know the Steelers very well they were NEVER going to sign one of the top CBs/S's that were available. For example CB Jenkins got a 5 yr 62M deal from the Giants...they Steelers could not afford it and would be dumb if they did that.

Re-signing the teams best CB is not good? Re-signing their starting LG (while he might be the weaker link on the OL still cheap money for a starter), is bad? Unneeded TE? Heath is gone and they don't have much behind him right now...James is still improving and Speath is pretty much an extra OL at this point. Plus this guy can bring yet another dimension to an already potent offense. Now they can focus on other needs in the draft (D!). Below is a pretty well summed up tidbit by Walterfootball.com (I know some don't like the site, but I think he's spot on with this):

"Green is very talented, but never got much of a chance in San Diego because he was playing behind Antonio Gates. He'll be a starter now, as the Steelers needed someone to replace the retired Heath Miller. Even better, this is a great bargain, especially when considering that other tight ends were paid more, despite the fact that Green was the top player at his position in free agency. It's laughable that Green is set to earn $20 million over four years, while Coby Fleener is getting $36 million over five seasons. This is a great transaction by Pittsburgh."

There are still CBs and S's available out there as FA that can be solid players for the team...this was only day 1 of the new year...there could be more on the way in the coming days.

"The match couldn't be more perfect on paper for both player and team. With Heath Miller's unexpected retirement following the season, the Steelers needed an all-around tight end, and Green fits the bill. Green first found his way onto the field in San Diego because he knew how to block. It's an added bonus because Green is already a gifted athlete at 6'6/240. He ran a 4.56 forty at the 2012 Combine with a 10-foot-4 broad jump. He's dripping with upside with Ben Roethlisberger in one of the game's top-three passing offenses and out of Antonio Gates' shadow." --Rotoworld

He'll be 26 in May. I really love this kid.

Really? We signed our #1 corner from last year at a #3 or #4 contract price. We signed out starting left guard, who played solidly and steadily, to a contract that is way below market value. We signed a guy who is our special teams captain, and has proven he can play well in a starting role, to a contract at backup pay. We resigned our #5 WR, who blocks, plays STs and has chemistry with his teammates to a deal that is barely higher than the vet minimum, and you're taking all of that as bad? Do you realize role players are important? Every champion has their role players.

Just checked out over the cap and the contract is set up nicely for us. There is more cap savings then dead money so if he is a bust(which God I hope not) we really are not out of options with him. In this day of mega salaries 4 - 20 is a good deal, i am liking what the front office is doing.

I think you got it right for sure.

I was simply going to reply--- yeah, and wave the agree towel. But I got curious.

TBH I was not really familiar with the player so I did a little checking. While his targeted % was slightly lower than Heath's [65 to 70%] his per catch avg was higher 14.1 to 11.1 all very impressive.

But more important maybe is according to the article he is a good blocker. [Is he?] Going out on routes only 38% of the time.

They did their homework on this one.

My regret is I really expected JJ to really be special and still do but frankly I can see how this could not be passed up.

Okay, even though I am really 100% D minded now I can see this deal. Keep it rolling.

Although I wasn't familiar with his game enough to know what kind of blocker he is, I never questioned it because the Steelers never would have brought him here if he wasn't. You absolutely have to be able to block to play for the Steelers.

Don't worry about JJ, from what I read, they are very high on him and this really shouldnt change anything with him.
