Has to be done after year 3 (last offseason for KP).
I dislike the use of mid-round picks on QBs with the idea of them being long term backups (e.g., Dobbs, Mason). It's a waste with picks that could be used to actually contribute to the team IMO.

I think teams with entrenched QBs should troll the sea of failed high pedigree QBs as backups instead of wasting draft capital.

Or wait for guys to fall to picks where other players are unlikely to make the team (e.g., Howard).

FWIW, I think our moves at QB in the last two seasons are about as good as you can expect if you don't end up with a top 3-5 OA pick.

Mason is a good backup but, yes we couldve found a good journeyman Qb who couldve done just as well. Only difference is a good journeyman costs between 3-5 million per year, and your probably looking at 3 years. Steelers didn't want to spend the money.

Kaepernick, Garrapolo and Purdy made it to Super Bowls. How many Steelers QBs have made it to the Super Bowl since 2012? Answer: ZERO

Garoppolo was drafted by NE. Kaepernick was a one hit wonder that benefitted from a top defense, and had a losing career record as a starting QB for SF.

    That's what I figured...:smiley1:

I thought I deleted that part of the comment when I made it. Along with the part that talked about how Kenny was given on by two teams in the offseason when his option needed to be decided on.

I think the funniest part about it was when the Browns GM said (pretended?) that it wasn't up to him to make the decision. That the Eagles chose not to exercise it and there was nothing he could do.

Kind of like how Tomlin would say that he wasn't really benching Kenny. Just not playing him.

These FO types go out of their way not to hurt KPs feelings it seems.

Agreed, and yet they still screw up, just look at trading away not one, not two,but three 1st round picks for Tray Lance, and He isn't even on their team anymore.

To be honest, and most will disagree with this, but I actually think he could be a pretty good Qb.........IF.....He really cared. I believe he is one of the gifted types of players that are more in love with being a football player, and what it brings, than actually loving to play football.

Yeah, his attitude is his biggest problem and I don't want a QB like that

49ers found their QB in Purdy, drafted in 7th round. Purdy has made up for the whiff on Lance. Steelers whiffed on Pickett and have been using vet QBs they don't have to develop ever since.... Trubisky, Fields, Wilson and Rodgers. Steelers have nothing to show after their whiff.

Actually no. Really think about it. 3 first round draft picks thrown away takes a lot to get over. Just think, it they could have spent those on other players, they may have actually won a SB instead of just going to them.

One of the reason why right now they have a old roster....Crazy they are 6-3 right now despite a depleted roster by injuries but I don't think it will continue.9-10 wins max and 3rd in their division is my prediction.Still a great coaching job by Shanahan this year

Yeah, well 1 of 32 teams in the league have been that lucky lol They've done it in an unconventional way too (trade for a young Favre, and two late first round selections of Rodgers and Love).

I agree, but even though they beat us, I'm not totally sold on Love. I'm still thinking of those 3 ducks he threw against us that I couldn't believe were not interceptions.

    Why lucky?

They evaluated each of their QBs very well, especially Brett Favre when they gave up a first-round pick to get him!

This is far from a Brady situation with the pats

I didn't want to draft him either. Not in the first. Just saying we had no idea of he would make it to 52 and we needed a QB. I don't fault the FO for taking that swing. It didn't work out but it wasn't just some bone head pick. They swing for the fences and whiffed.

In fairness, we've only tried drafting a starter in 2 of the past 22 drafts. We got one really right and one really wrong. The percentage is so low that you can't be all mad that we drafted mid round guys and didn't get a starter. Only 13% of QB's outside of the first round have been to one or more Pro Bowl's and not even every QB that has been to a Pro Bowl was ever a "franchise guy" names like Gardner Minshew, Geno Smith, Tyler Huntley, Carson Wentz, Tyrod Taylor, Teddy Bridgewater, Jameis Winston, Mitchell Trubisky, Kyler Murray and Nick Foles have all been PB players the past, and I would contend that none of those guys are franchise guys. Some of them were furst rounders, but 5 of them weren't. Meaning that the chance of a franchise guy outside the first round is less than 10%.

I had Landry on my list, but kinda refrained from going too far back in history. Dixon, Jacobs, Tee Martin, Brian St. Pierre... all day 3 picks that amounted to nothing. Some of the guys you mention (Vick, Lynch, Haskins, etc.) were never meant to be starters, but talent that maybe they could develop into a real back up. Wilson, Fields, and Trubisky were all meant to be bridge "spot" starters (even Rodgers at this point in his career), while Fields had some success we gave up on him for Wilson who was a failure. Trubisky was a miss, and really only a back up in the league. Rodgers has been a hit.

We simply haven't invested the capital in the QB position at the starter level to say we suck at acquiring or developing talent at the position. We've done well in the mid rounds with quality backups, but have only really taken a huge swing (1st round pick) at the position twice in 22 years. I don't consider Wilson (basically free), Fields (day 3 pick trade), Trubisky (signed for backup money to spot start until KFP was ready), or any of our round 3 or later QB's drafted as real "swings" at a franchise guy.
